Shen Chengfeng felt that something was off about this guy. Yes, something was very off. There seemed to be some ulterior motive in her burning gaze.

Xiao Jing stared intently at the man so close to her. The warm sunlight fell on the two of them. Whether it was because she was injured and her head was starting to spin, or because the fluttering of her heart was making her dizzy, she didn’t know.

But she stood on tiptoe and stubbornly stretched her neck toward him.

“Smack!” Her lips pressed against his face.

“…”

“…”

“Thump!” The bird got lost again and crashed into a tree with a thud, finally landing at the feet of the two people.

Xiao Jing snapped out of her daze and instinctively backed away, retreating as if she wanted to plunge into the stream and drown herself.

Shen Chengfeng reached out and grabbed her as she stumbled backward, nearly falling, and quickly pulled her back into his arms.

Xiao Jing bumped into his chest once again. Their eyes met, and withered leaves fluttered down, covering their feet.

“What are you two doing?” A sudden third voice rang out from not far away, and the next instant, a figure swept in like a hurricane.

Xiao Zheng glared angrily, quickly hiding his fourth sister behind him, and stared fiercely at Shen Chengfeng, who was actually hugging and cuddling his fourth sister.

Shen Chengfeng didn’t care about Xiao Zheng’s sudden appearance. He just patted off the non-existent dust on his body and said in a normal tone, “General Xiao Zheng, this seems to be against the rules.”

“I don’t care about your rules. What were you doing just now? Who gave you permission to put your hand on my Xiao Si’s body?” Xiao Zheng wished he could shoot this lecherous man’s head off.

Shen Chengfeng shook his head. “General Xiao Zheng seems to have misunderstood something. I did not hug Xiao Jing just now.”

“I saw it with both eyes, and you’re still telling me you didn’t hug him? Do you think I’m stupid, or blind?”

Shen Chengfeng remained silent, the unspoken message being: I not only consider you stupid, but also blind.

Xiao Zheng cursed under his breath, then turned to Xiao Jing and said, “Xiao Si, let’s go.”

Xiao Jing was both amused and exasperated, and said, “Third Brother, we are on opposing sides.”

Xiao Zheng waved his hand, “You can now be considered my prisoner of war.”

“Third Brother, I would rather die than surrender,” Xiao Jing refused.

Xiao Zheng pointed to Shen Chengfeng, who was watching them intently behind him, and said earnestly, “This guy has ulterior motives towards you, stay away from him.”

“Ahem.” Xiao Jing looked away guiltily. Could she say that she had just kissed the captain and she was the one who had ulterior motives towards him?

If the plot continues like this, the TV series would definitely go like this: the female lead personally washes herself clean, then lies sprawled on the bed, winking seductively, acting coquettishly, and saying sweetly, “Captain, come on, hurt me, you’re plotting against me.”

Xiao Jing shuddered, startled by her own thought and broke out in a cold sweat.

She silently imagined the captain making circles and crosses at her.

What the hell am I thinking?

Xiao Zheng gripped Xiao Jing’s arms tightly with both hands, shook her body twice, and said cautiously, “Xiao Si, wake up! This guy has an ulterior motive; he’s definitely thinking—”

“Cough cough.” Xiao Jing frowned and said with a bitter smile, “Third Brother, if you don’t let go of me, you’re going to kill me.”

Xiao Zheng then noticed her bloodless face. He then looked down and saw a few drops of blood suddenly dripping onto the previously clean ground, which was quite striking.

Xiao Jing sat on the ground, completely exhausted, and her wounds began to bleed again.

Xiao Zheng snapped out of his daze and quickly knelt down in front of her. “What happened? How did you get hurt?”

“This military training was all real combat, so getting injured is to be expected,” Xiao Jing replied.

“So what are you doing here meddling in?” Xiao Zheng opened his bag, rummaged around for a bit, and finally found a bottle of hemostatic medicine.

Seeing this, Xiao Jing quickly clenched her fist in her hand. She then said evasively, “Third Brother, we are on opposing sides. To avoid any misunderstandings, you should leave first.”

Xiao Zheng nodded, glanced once more at the silent guy behind him, and gritted his teeth, saying, “You just wait. After this military training is over, we’ll have a proper chat, with our fists!”

Shen Chengfeng ignored his threat and went straight forward. Looking at the bloodstains on the ground, he prepared to take the medicine bottle from her hand.

Xiao Jing grabbed his hand and said with delight, “Captain, let me apply the medicine for you first.”

When Shen Chengfeng saw her hands, which were still clearly stained with blood, stretch out in front of him, he grabbed her small hands, pried open her fingers, and took the medicine bottle.

Xiao Jing stared in disbelief, “Captain—”

“Write a three-thousand-word self-criticism after you get back.” Shen Chengfeng opened the medicine bottle and applied it all to her wounds.

Xiao Jing’s heart skipped a beat, and she guiltily turned her head to look elsewhere.

Shen Chengfeng placed the empty bottle on the ground, rested one hand on his knee, and stared intently at the little face covered in graffiti. He then said, “This is a one-time thing, and there will be no next time.”

“Captain, I just—”

“Want to relive the memory?” Shen Chengfeng interrupted her.

“Cough cough.” Xiao Jing couldn’t help but cough twice, her breath caught in her throat.

“Get ready to go.” Shen Chengfeng extended his right hand to her.

Xiao Jing didn’t have that affectation. She simply stood up, supporting herself on his hand, and followed behind him as always.

The sun shone brightly, a gentle breeze caressed the face, and the forest was serene.

Pei Yi spotted two figures approaching from a distance, hurriedly ran out from his cover, stood at attention, and saluted, saying, “Captain.”

Shen Chengfeng nodded, replaced the magazine, and said, “You take Xiao Jing back.”

“Yes, Captain.”

Xiao Jing stood behind Shen Chengfeng, determined not to leave.

Shen Chengfeng glanced at the motionless little body and said in a low voice, “Go back now, and the three thousand-word self-criticism will be canceled.”

“Captain, I can write 30,000 words after I get back.”

“Do you think I’m consulting with you?” Shen Chengfeng emphasized.

Xiao Jing pouted, “I can actually still fight.”

Before she could finish speaking, Shen Chengfeng threw a punch at her.

Xiao Jing knew danger was approaching, but her body was too weak to avoid it.

Shen Chengfeng’s fist stopped abruptly just one centimeter away from her cheek. He then said, “With your reaction speed, do you think you can stay here any longer?”

Xiao Jing lowered her eyes and remained silent.

“Pei Yi,” Shen Chengfeng called out.

“Yes, Captain.”

“Take him back.” Shen Chengfeng picked up his weapon, turned around, and quickly left.

Pei Yi walked ahead of Xiao Jing and smiled, “Don’t worry, we won this round.”

Xiao Jing lowered her head.

Pei Yi continued, “According to my count, the Zhenghu team has only three members left, while we still have ten.”

“Vice Captain, have you taken a count of the casualties?” Xiao Jing asked.

Pei Yi suddenly stopped, his brows furrowing slightly. The Tieying and Zhenghu teams were both equally strong. In this exercise, four members of the Tieying team were injured, and the same was true for Zhenghu. But what about the other teams? It was very likely that they had zero casualties.

Under such circumstances, Tieying would be at a disadvantage in the second match.

Xiao Jing asked, “When is the second competition?”

“Immediately after.” Pei Yi’s expression was serious. “No matter what, you can’t continue now.”

Xiao Jing boarded the helicopter and looked down at the Serenan Peninsula. She grabbed the cabin door that was about to close and shouted to Pei Yi, “The captain is still injured. Remember to apply medicine to him.”

Pei Yi waved her hand. “I understand.”

The helicopter ascended high into the sky, then turned around and sped inland.

In the infirmary of SS501 Regiment, four hospital beds were placed side by side.

Xiao Jing glanced at her left and right sides. Lin Qi had a leg injury, Ji Shanlin had a penetrating wound in his shoulder, and the most pitiful one was Jiang Xin. He was shot down from the mountain and was said to have suffered multiple fractures and was shot several times. Each shot hit his bulletproof vest. Although it was not fatal, it was undoubtedly adding insult to injury for a patient with fractures.

Jiang Xin was covered in thick splints. He looked at Xiao Jing and said coldly, “Don’t look at me with the look you have. I’ll still be a hero eighteen years from now.”

“I just wanted to comfort you. Don’t be discouraged. Life is like an electrocardiogram. If it goes straight, it means you’re dead. Be brave,” Xiao Jing said sincerely.

Jiang Xin straightened up and sat up stiffly. He then said, “Do you believe that even if I break my bones, I can still beat you with my fists, which are as big as sandbags, until you cry for your parents?”

“Really?” Xiao Jing sat up from the bed, walked directly to him, and instead of using her fist which was like a sandbag, she stretched out a finger and forcefully poked his bone gap.

“Ah, ahh! It hurts, it hurts! Let go, let go!” Jiang Xin shouted.

Xiao Jing smiled and said, “I’ve also broken a bone before, so I know which spot will cause you so much pain that you’ll question the meaning of life.”

“You–“

“Call me Uncle Xiao.”

“Do you believe I’ll beat you to death?” Jiang Xin roared.

“Hmm? Don’t want to call me?” Xiao Jing looked thoughtfully at her fingers.

Jiang Xin clenched his fists, closed his eyes, and resolutely said, “Uncle Xiao.”

“Alright, I’ll allow you to sleep for a while.” Xiao Jing patted his shoulder, and a series of crisp cracking sounds of bones breaking could be heard in the air.

Lin Qi’s eyes were fixed on Xiao Jing, and some words stayed stuck in his throat.

Xiao Jing turned around, took small steps to lie back on the hospital bed, looked at the ceiling, noticed the burning gaze on her right, and turned around until they were looking at each other.

Lin Qi tightened his hold on the sheet beneath him and broke the eerie atmosphere by asking, “Are you badly injured?”

“It isn’t heavy, it just affects my movements, so the captain sent me back.”

“I’ve thought about everything you said very, very seriously. Xiao Jing, you’ve misunderstood. I only see you as a brother, a very close brother. I know our relationship status, so I’ve never thought about taking things further. Please don’t make yourself uncomfortable, okay?” Lin Qi sat up, his words revealing his grievance.

Xiao Jing also sat up. After hesitating, she asked cautiously, “Is that really all there is to it?”

“Do you think I could have ulterior motives towards you?” Lin Qi retorted.

Xiao Jing remained silent, somewhat confused. How could Lin Qi, such an honest person, have such thoughts? They were clearly comrades-in-arms as close as brothers.

“If I had any improper thoughts about you, I would leave immediately without you having to say anything, and I would never bother you.” Lin Qi made a solemn promise. He then lowered his voice and spoke earnestly, “Xiao Jing, I only want to be good to you, like an older brother to his younger brother. I appreciate your hard work, that’s all.”

Xiao Jing remained silent; what was clearly a pure and innocent relationship had become something shameful because of her avoidance of the topic.

Lin Qi didn’t hear a reply, and in desperation, he grabbed Xiao Jing’s arm, gazing expectantly into her eyes.

Xiao Jing was torn between these two eyes. Lin Qi was an honest and simple man, and all his thoughts were clearly written on his face without much concealment. How could she have thought of such a simple person so despicably?

Lin Qi asked cautiously, “If you feel uncomfortable, I can keep my distance. As long as you don’t get annoyed with me and pay attention to me from time to time, I’ll be satisfied.”

Xiao Jing smiled and said, “It was I who was being petty and judging you by my own standards. Lin Qi, let’s forget about these things and be brothers like before.”

Before Lin Qi could react, a pair of hands were already on his shoulders.

Xiao Jing laughed without any attempt to hide her laughter. She then said, “Brother, I’m a little hungry. Do you want to go to the cafeteria to get something to eat?”

Lin Qi quickly stood up. “I’ll go get you some food. Your wound has just healed, so don’t move around too much.”

Xiao Jing waved her hand, “It’s just a minor injury.”

“You two should at least show some concern for us two seriously injured patients,” Jiang Xin said in a drawn-out tone, giving a timely reminder to the two who were arm in arm, preparing to go to eat.

Xiao Jing glanced sideways at Ji Shanlin, who was still unconscious on the hospital bed, then looked at Jiang Xin, who was eagerly waiting, and nodded, “Someone will bring you food later, don’t worry, you won’t starve.”

“Xiao Shiba, you’ll be criticized for this kind of behavior.” Jiang Xin struggled to sit up, but as soon as he moved, his bones began to creak and crack.

“Yes, I accept the criticism from my supervisor.”

“Shiqi, I’m hungry too.” Jiang Xin then turned his gaze to the honest Lin Qi.

Lin Qi glanced at Xiao Jing, not explicitly stating his intentions, but anyone with eyes could see what he was thinking: “Yes, I’ll listen to Xiao Jing.”

Jiang Xin lay on the hospital bed, utterly despondent, staring at the blank white ceiling. He then roared in anguish, “What about our promise to work together to create a happy life? What about our comradeship of never abandoning each other through thick and thin? You two, your consciences will hurt!”

“Bang.” The door to the infirmary slammed shut.

Lin Qi laughed and said, “Are you really not going to bring Jiang Xin any food?”

“He can’t eat like this.” Xiao Jing hummed a tune as she walked down the corridor. Suddenly, a night breeze swept in, carrying with it a strong fragrance of osmanthus.

Just as Lin Qi pushed open the door to the infirmary, a figure teleported over like a ghost.

Xiao Jing was surprised and instinctively stepped back.

Yan Mo held a bunch of lilies in his hand, his brows furrowed with anxiety. The moment he saw Xiao Jing, he fluttered his wings and buzzed over like a bee smelling nectar.

He then asked anxiously, “How did you get injured? I told you not to stay in a place like the special forces where you’re always in danger. Is your injury serious? Should I take you to the Joint Military Region General Hospital for treatment?”

Xiao Jing didn’t expect him to suddenly run over, so much so that before she could react, she was tightly hugged by a pair of arms. The next moment, the man opened his arms and hugged her tightly.

Yan Mo said with heartache, “My nephew has never known how to take care of people. Look what he’s done to my delicate Xiao Si. His face is so pale and he looks so haggard. Come with your brother Yan Mo, okay? I’ll take you to eat something delicious and to play something fun.”

Xiao Jing pushed away his head that was leaning closer. At this moment, General Yan Mo looked just like a male cat howling incessantly outside a house in March. She smiled bitterly and said, “General Yan Mo, I have an injury on my waist.”

Upon hearing this, Yan Mo quickly released his grip, frowning as he asked, “What’s wrong? Did I hurt you?”

Xiao Jing deliberately took two steps back, intentionally creating distance between them. She glanced at Lin Qi, who was standing straight behind Yan Mo, and whispered, “Lin Qi, you go to the cafeteria first, I’ll be there shortly.”

Lin Qi saluted Yan Mo, after all, this was a leader, so he didn’t dare to stop him too much. He walked towards the cafeteria, looking back every few steps.

Silence returned to the surroundings. Xiao Jing covered her mouth and coughed lightly to ease the awkwardness, saying, “General Yan Mo, I have told you more than once that I am a very normal person, and we are not suitable for each other.”

“Of course I know you’re normal, and I’m normal too. It’s only natural for two normal people like us to be together.”

“How is it normal?” Xiao Jing pointed at him, then at herself. “We are both men.”

“Yes.”

“So we’re not a good match.” Xiao Jing thought about leaving.

Yan Mo blocked her path, his usual nonchalant attitude gone. He then said, “I like you, regardless of your gender. I want to be with you, regardless of your gender. I love you as a person, not for your gender. Whether you are a man or a woman, I only want to be with you. Even if everyone points fingers at me, I still want to walk side by side with you. I really, really like you, Xiao Jing!”

“General Yan Mo—”

“Yes, I know you like that brat San’er. It’s okay, I will beat him. I will prove to you that we are a match made in heaven.”

“…”

Yan Mo hugged her tightly again, then pouted and leaned closer to Xiao Jing’s face, closer and closer, almost kissing her, just about to kiss her.
