“How could this be? This is impossible! My grain couldn’t have turned out like this!” Cheng Linshi’s face turned deathly pale in an instant, all her previous smugness gone.

Her wrinkled, triangular eyes widened like dead fish eyes, staring intently at the grain in her hands, utterly incredulous. How could her grain be rotten?

It must be this part of the rice seedlings that had the problem; the others must be fine.

Cheng Linshi yelled at her family members, frantically scooping up all the remaining grain. Their hearts sank deeper and deeper into despair, because not a single grain had been harvested!

This result turned Cheng Linshi’s already pale face to a deathly white. She stared intently at the rotten grain scattered on the ground, her mind blank.

The Cheng family members stood motionless like wooden stakes, thinking they were hallucinating, but even rubbing their eyes until they were almost blinded, the result was still the same.

All shriveled grains, even the coarse grains were useless, a complete crop failure!

Silence.

A deathly silence.

A mournful melody seemed to fill the air.

Not only were the Cheng family members in disbelief at the result, but the surrounding villagers were also utterly astonished.

Although the weather this year hadn’t been great, most of the crops in everyone’s fields had survived.

Especially the Cheng family’s crops, which looked robust and vigorous, a sight that had secretly made many envious. How could they all be considered waste grains? Their growth was too deceptive!

The most bizarre thing was that even the worst-growing rice seedlings had some survive; how could the Cheng family’s entire crop have perished? This didn’t make sense!

“Wow, look at the Qin family’s rice seedlings! They’ve all had a bumper harvest!” someone shouted, drawing everyone’s attention to the Qin family’s field where the grain had already been picked over. They discovered that the Qin family’s seemingly droopy rice seedlings, which looked like they would only produce waste grains, were now producing bright, plump ears of rice!

“They’re ripe! They’re all ripe!” Qin Gang was overjoyed, beaming with excitement as he held the rice in his hands.

“Mom, wife, second sister, look, our rice is still alive!”

“What are you yelling about? I’m not blind!”

Qin Baishi glared at her eldest son, peeling back the husks to reveal plump, jade-like white rice grains that emitted a pleasant grainy aroma. Her face lit up with a smile.

“They’re not just alive, they’re incredibly bountiful! It’s a blessing from heaven!”

The villagers, witnessing this scene, were filled with envy.

The Qin family was incredibly lucky. They all used the same reservoir, and their land was located in a remote area, lacking water compared to everyone else, yet they were the only ones with such a bumper harvest.

In stark contrast to the Cheng family’s situation, the Qin family hadn’t wasted a single grain; even their coarse grains grew better than others, emitting a fragrant aroma that made one’s mouth water and tempted to eat them raw.

Just a few days ago, everyone was sympathizing with the Qin family, fearing they would have no harvest. This result was truly unexpected.

Suddenly, the villagers were all congratulating the Qin family.

The Qin family members were all beaming with joy; their happiness was amplified by their previous distress.

Someone asked, “Qin family, how did you grow it? How did you manage to take such good care of the crops? Is there some secret?”

Qin Baishi replied, “There’s no secret. We did the same thing as everyone else. Maybe it’s just God’s favor. It’s just a matter of luck. Fortune changes, and your family will be next!” Her words were witty and instantly soothed the hearts of the villagers who had felt sour.

At this time, a gossipy old woman chimed in, “Cheng family, you just told the Qin family to take all their grain back to use as firewood, and now it seems that fate has befallen you!”
