When the holy city of Bethlehem appeared before Luo Mi, Luo Mi had a slight sense of disorientation, as if he had been transported to another world.
He had only been away from the Holy City for a little over twenty days, but this thrilling and exciting journey through the Demon Realm almost overturned his previous understanding.
I wonder if the people in the Vatican are in chaos since the new pope disappeared just a few days after taking office… Maybe when he returned to the Vatican he might find that they had already elected a new pope?
Luo Mi checked his wings, making sure they were bright and had impressive special effects, before slowly descending towards Bethlehem.
Inside the holy city, everything remained the same. The priests calmly carried out their daily duties and prayers in the monasteries and churches, while the laypeople worked diligently at their posts, seemingly unaware that His Holiness the Pope had disappeared.
Luo Mi cautiously flew directly into St. Paul’s Square, and then entered St. Paul’s Cathedral from the square.
Upon entering the cathedral, Luo Mi saw two cardinals discussing something with their subordinates. Seeing Luo Mi enter, the two cardinals’ faces lit up with barely suppressed joy, and they quickly stepped forward: “Your Majesty, you’ve returned?”
There was only surprise, but no panic… Luo Mi assessed their attitude and nodded calmly, as if he had only gone out for a half-hour walk.
The two cardinals walked beside Luo Mi and said respectfully, “The envoys from all the duchies who are attending His Majesty’s ceremony have arrived in the Holy City. The Imperial delegation is also on its way and will arrive in two or three days.”
“Preparations for the inauguration ceremony are complete, awaiting only His Majesty’s confirmation.”
“The taxes brought by the bishops returning to the Holy City to report on their duties…”
Luo Mi let these complicated papal matters go in one ear and out the other, and only said after they finished speaking, “Have Joseph come to me.”
Joseph was the leading cardinal and the one who had the most dealings with Luo Mi before.
The two cardinals responded in unison.
Luo Mi returned to the Pope’s “office” and saw the scepter of glory floating quietly above the Pope’s throne. It seemed to sense his presence and flew into his hand on its own.
Luo Mi recalled that before leaving the Demon Realm, Anos told him that it would be best to wait until he had the power of three advanced demonic physiques before trying to use the Great Prophecy to go back to the previous era.
He now possessed a gift from Lord Zixiang, and the two Anoses had promised to find him one each.
Before that, the Scepter of Glory could only be used as a divine spell casting device.
Cardinal Joseph arrived at the Papal Palace shortly afterward: “Your Majesty, welcome back.”
Luo Mi scrutinized the cardinal’s expression before asking, “Did anything happen while I was away?”
Joseph shook his head: “Everything was peaceful, and the Vatican is operating normally according to the instructions you left behind.”
My instructions? Luo Mi was somewhat surprised, but remained outwardly calm: “Very well, now I have a new task to give you.”
“Your Majesty, please speak.”
“Use the full force of the Holy See to find all the Chosen Ones, leaving no one out.” Luo Mi looked at Joseph and emphasized in a serious tone, “This is the most important and highest priority task at present.”
Joseph was visibly taken aback, and after a moment of consideration, asked, “Does Your Majesty mean that we should borrow the Book of the Lamb?”
Knowing that the new pope was a latecomer to the papacy and knew little about the secrets of the Vatican, the cardinal further explained, “The Book of the Lamb contains the names of all the chosen ones, but only the pope can access the Book of the Lamb before the end of the world.”
He subtly conveyed that the Pope’s help was needed in this matter.
Luo Mi thought about what she needed to do and nodded: “Where is the Book of the Lamb?”
Joseph did not ask why the Pope suddenly wanted to find all the chosen ones, but respectfully said, “Please come with me.”
….
The holy city of Bethlehem was originally the first version of the ark built by the God’s Heart. Later, through continuous repairs and maintenance by the Papacy, it gradually evolved into the military fortress it is today.
Descending the spiral staircase inside St. Paul’s Cathedral, in the underground cathedral some distance below the horizon, Luo Mi saw the legendary artifact, the Book of the Lamb.
The Book of Lambs was a sixteen-page book made of grayish-yellow sheepskin, with each sheepskin strung together by thread made of cashmere wool, and finally tied in a knot on the other side of the book.
In the symbolism of the Papacy, the lamb represented a pure, innocent soul untainted by worldly corruption. The book made of lambskin contained the names of those closest to God.
The mere thought that the “god” hidden behind the Vatican was essentially treating all humans as prey made Luo Mi feel nauseous at these symbols.
He gripped the scepter of glory and approached the Book of the Lamb.
The Book of the Lamb lay quietly in its place, only releasing a faint layer of holy light when Luo Mi’s fingers touched it. The holy light swept over Luo Mi, then subsided as if it had passed some kind of certification.
Luo Mi breathed a slight sigh of relief— he had been a little worried that the Book of the Lamb would refuse access to his condition, which was characterized by a combination of various physical constitutions.
The Book of the Lamb was filled with names in sacred script, but it contained only names and no other details.
On the first page, Luo Mi saw the name “Lian”.
Although the name was common, Luo Mi intuitively felt that it referred to himself.
So he really was in the Book of the Lamb… No wonder he had such a smooth entry into the Holy See and not many people bothered him… At this moment, Luo Mi was no longer surprised by this— instead, he was a little surprised that it was his pseudonym instead of his real name that was recorded.
Luo Mi quickly scanned the document, then looked at Cardinal Joseph. The cardinal promptly presented him with a blank notebook.
Luo Mi stroked the cross decoration on the scepter of glory, and holy light shone forth as he wrote down the names from the Book of the Lamb in the notebook.
The copying was done by divine magic, so Luo Mi only needed to wait on the side. He casually glanced at the Book of the Lamb, speculating about the abilities of this divine artifact.
Among the three divine artifacts, the Scepter of Glory represented complete control over the Light Realm, the Eternal Fence was the very essence of the Light Realm’s barrier, but what was so special about the Book of the Lamb besides recording the list of the chosen ones?
Luo Mi stared at the Book of the Lamb for a while, but due to his limited knowledge, he couldn’t draw any conclusions. So he casually asked Joseph beside him, “Where did the Book of the Lamb come from?”
Bishop Joseph was already used to the new pope’s “ignorance” of the Bible: “It is a gift from God to the Papacy.”
“When?” Luo Mi thought for a moment and remembered that the God’s Heart had said that the Church was actually established when he was sent to earth by God.
Joseph answered without thinking: “His Holiness the first Pope of the Third Age received divine revelation in Bethlehem, which was then still a wilderness, and was granted the three great artifacts, thus enabling him to establish the Papacy.”
It sounded like the official explanation, but maybe the God’s Heart brought it over on its own? Luo Mi pondered for a moment, then thought it unlikely: “Were there already Chosen Ones back then?”
Joseph hesitated for a moment, then shook his head: “The concept of the Chosen Ones only came into being at the beginning of the Fourth Age. According to the records of the Papacy, the Book of the Lamb in the Third Age contained the names of those who had repented.”
Luo Mi became interested: “Repent for what?”
“Do you know that at the end of the Second Age, mankind betrayed the angels, incurring God’s wrath?” Joseph asked cautiously, and only continued after receiving a definite answer. “Mankind bore the original sin of disrespecting God and angels, but the Book of the Lambs records the names of those who truly repented, who were able to be cleansed of their original sin and were taken to Paradise by God.”
Luo Mi frowned: “Were these people taken away during the apocalypse? Do they have any common characteristics?”
“Most of them were called by God before the acopalypse,” Joseph replied. “The common point is… later, these repentant people were indeed identified, and it was found that they were all descendants of those who had gathered around the angels in the Second Age.”
Luo Mi seemed to be deep in thought.
Both the materials accessible only to the Pope and the description of the God’s Heart stated that at the end of the Second Age, the angel known as the God’s Wisdom was devoured by humans, who in turn became the first demons.
The descendants of those who gathered around the God’s Wisdom… It didn’t sound like a description of demons… Luo Mi’s thoughts raced, and he made a guess: These “descendants” might be the offspring of the demons who devoured the God’s Wisdom when they were still human!
The original demons became demons, but their descendants were probably still human, living in the human world.
Considering that the Book of Lambs was essentially about choosing one’s own “food,” Luo Mi gained a deeper understanding of these so-called “repentant people”: they were actually direct descendants of those sinners from the past.
God’s decision to have their names appear in the Book of the Lamb is not an act of forgiveness and mercy, but a trumpet call to death!
Thinking about it this way, Luo Mi suddenly felt something strange: God really cared a lot for that angel, God’s Wisdom, not only avenging him, but also wanting to exterminate the enemy’s descendants!
But then why is God so indifferent to the God’s Heart? They are all angels he created himself, so even if there is favoritism, it shouldn’t be this extreme, right?
Luo Mi touched his chin in confusion, unable to understand why.
He suddenly remembered that there was a statue of God’s Wisdom in his system space.
The statue was obtained from the underground alchemy laboratory of the Royal Palace of Perde and had remained untouched in the system space ever since.
After returning to the Holy See, aside from waiting for the Holy See to find information about the Chosen Ones, there was nothing else that was too urgent. Luo Mi immediately decided to study the statue that night.
….
After handing the completed copy of the Book of the Lamb to Joseph, Luo Mi returned to the Palace of Angels, where he had once lived with Anos. He then dispersed all the knights, sank his consciousness into the system space, and planned to retrieve the statue of the God’s Wisdom.
Just then, a long-lost electronic voice rang in his ears:
[The system advises the host not to do this. Once the statue leaves the host’s system space, it will no longer be able to provide the host with concealment abilities, and the power of the god will immediately detect and turn against the host.]
