Qin Shuanglu was naturally unwilling to separate from the family; her husband had died young.

She and Qin Lang had shamelessly stayed at the Qin family’s house, without any work.

Qin Lang, that sickly fellow, couldn’t earn much hauling goods, and at least he could eat his fill while living with Qin Baishi.

If she separated, she wouldn’t be able to find food anymore, and she wasn’t stupid.

Qin Baishi had accurately predicted Qin Shuanglu’s thoughts; upon hearing this, Qin Shuanglu dared not say anything more and could only return to her room with a resentful expression.

Yun Zheng, feeling embarrassed, whispered, “Grandma, why don’t we give the food coupons to Third Aunt? It would be good if she could give Fourth Brother some extra food to help him out.”

Qin Baishi, ever gentle with her precious granddaughter, patted Yun Zheng’s hand and said, “Good girl, don’t be naive. Do you really think she cares about your Fourth Brother? You don’t know how selfish your Third Aunt is, so greedy and lazy. Lang’er’s weak health is all her own doing. That shameless woman, she always keeps all the good food for herself, leaving nothing for others. She even expressed her own breast milk to drink, only giving Lang’er rice porridge. Later, because she insisted on eating pheasant, she made her husband go hunting in the mountains, and as a result, her husband never came out. If it weren’t for Lang’er’s pitiful state, fearing he’d starve to death with such an unreliable mother, would I have let her freeload off the Qin family for so many years?”

Yun Zheng was utterly dumbfounded. Could there really be a mother in this world who was so greedy that she wouldn’t even give her own breast milk to her son, drinking it herself instead?

Who in the world would dare call themselves a foodie in front of Qin Shuanglu?

Nobody!

Amazing! Unbelievable!

But Yun Zheng suddenly remembered something: Qin Shuanglu wasn’t actually Qin Baishi’s biological daughter.

In her past life, the original owner of this body overheard Qin Baishi muttering to her deceased husband one night.

The next day, the original owner made a scene, causing Qin Shuanglu to harbor resentment towards her, further leading to the Qin family’s downfall. She then removed her name from the Qin family register and remarried.

….

That evening, the whole family ate in the main room. With tables and chairs, they finally didn’t have to stand by the stove to eat, and everyone was cheerful, like it was New Year’s.

Because she hadn’t received her food coupons during the day, Qin Shuanglu sat there looking sullen and displeased.

The Qin family knew Qin Shuanglu’s tendency to be unhappy if she couldn’t get the better of them, so they ignored her. She sulked alone, and no one came to comfort her. Even her own son was only talking to Yun Zheng, which made her even angrier.

Yun Zheng knew Qin Shuanglu disliked her, so she naturally wouldn’t try to be friendly.

She considered the Qin family as family, but she couldn’t muster any goodwill towards someone who didn’t even let her own son drink breast milk.

“Qin Shuanglu, if you don’t want to eat, then get out! Otherwise, why are you giving me attitude in this room? Do you think I owe you anything?”

Qin Baishi came out with a bowl of rice and started yelling at Qin Shuanglu for giving Yun Zheng such a hard time.

Qin Shuanglu was starving, so she quickly smiled ingratiatingly at the words.

Her gaze then fell on the sponge cake[1] in her hand, her eyes narrowing.

“Oh, Mom made sponge cake today. Is it because I’ve been working so hard and lost weight, and you wanted to make me some nourishing food?”

She reached for it, but Qin Baishi slapped her hand away.

“This is for Nannan to nourish her body. How can you compete with your niece for food? And you’ve been slacking off in the fields all month, you can’t even weed properly, and you still have the nerve to say you’ve worked hard?”

Qin Shuanglu blushed, wanting to say that Yun Zheng hadn’t done anything, but she knew that would be asking for trouble; she wasn’t worthy of comparing herself to Yun Zheng.

“Just cook another bowl,” she said matter-of-factly.

“Anyway, we’ll get the land back soon, and we’re not short of food. We’ve paid back so many coupons, there’ll be some left. We’ve been eating bran for so long, we need a good meal to nourish ourselves. And my older brother and sister-in-law, they’re the main force too.”
