With a few days left until the gala, Jiang Shining finally began to leisurely choose a dress for herself.
Unexpectedly, the female employee who had come to see her before called her again.
“President Jiang, our boss is very sincere in wanting to cooperate with you. You can choose a dress for the party first. He will probably be back after the New Year and we can meet to discuss the contract.”
“I won’t wear it.” Jiang Shining said calmly.
In the afternoon, she received another phone call.
“President Jiang, is it alright to meet during the day on the day of the Gala Night event?”
“No.” Jiang Shining remained resolute.
That evening, the female employee held her phone, looking at her boss hesitantly.
“Boss, they’re being so disrespectful, are you sure you still want to…?”
Inside the office, a man in a dark gray pinstripe suit sat on the sofa. His slightly long black hair was combed to one side, and he wore a black scarf around his neck, making him look like a Shanghai gangster boss.
Chen Sheng crossed his legs and nodded his chin.
“Keep trying.”
There was nothing the secretary could do but call back.
“Does your family make harassing phone calls?” Jiang Shining couldn’t help but ask after the call was connected.
Chen Sheng’s lips curled slightly.
“President Jiang, is it alright to meet tomorrow?” the secretary asked. She glanced at Chen Sheng’s expression and added, “You can set the time yourself.”
“Then tomorrow,” Jiang Shining said.
She named a large hotel and then said casually, “However, these kinds of hotels require reservations, and you called too late.”
“It’s alright, we’ll handle the reservation issue,” the secretary said patiently.
After hanging up the phone, she turned back, still puzzled.
“Boss, she’s deliberately making things difficult for you. Why should we cooperate with someone like that?” she couldn’t help but say. “She’s not worth it at all.”
Chen Sheng rested his hand on the back of the chair, his fingers holding an old-fashioned flip-top lighter, and tapped the back of the chair lightly.
He looked up, glanced at his secretary, and then said calmly, “Am I the one doing the business, or are you?”
The secretary immediately fell silent.
Chen Sheng stood up, walked to the French windows, his slender fingers still fiddling with the cap of a lighter, opening and closing it. He then took a cigarette out of his pocket and lit it.
“This is the last time.” After a long pause, he said, “I don’t like women who gossip, no matter how outstanding their professional skills are.”
….
Jiang Shining chose to meet in the afternoon to avoid a situation like the one she had with Feng Fuman last time. The barrage of calls from her sons almost made her question her existence.
The afternoons during work hours would definitely be much quieter. As for whether or not to tell them about this— of course not. If her sons meddle in everything; where would that leave her dignity?
However, apart from the annual celebrity gala this weekend, Jiang Shining didn’t have much to do before the Lunar New Year. And after the New Year, a new variety show would start filming.
That evening, someone messaged her, saying they had booked a private room at the hotel and would meet her at 1 p.m. the next day.
The next day, Jiang Shining left the company and drove to the hotel.
After parking the car in the underground garage, a waiter came up to her. Jiang Shining told him the number of the private room, and the waiter led the way.
They took the elevator to the sixth floor, where a long corridor, like a hotel, stretched out, with private rooms on both sides. Apart from waiters pushing food carts around busily, it really did resemble a hotel. Because of the hotel’s high level of security, making it difficult for people to take photos, many celebrities preferred this place for private gatherings with friends.
As soon as she entered the corridor, Jiang Shining saw a person standing in the distance. It was the female employee who had come to her with the brochure a couple of days ago, who was also Chen Sheng’s secretary.
The secretary sized up Jiang Shining. Today, Jiang Shining was wearing sunglasses, a black trench coat, and red lipstick, exuding an aura of a powerful and unapproachable figure. She didn’t seem to be there to discuss business; she looked more like she was there to seek revenge.
She harbored countless grievances, but outwardly maintained a polite smile.
“Please come in, President Jiang. Our boss has been waiting for you for a long time.”
The secretary opened the door to let Jiang Shining in, then closed it again. With that, she said she was getting off work for the day.
Upon entering the private room, Jiang Shining did not go over and sit down. Instead, she leaned back against the door, crossed her arms, and slightly raised her delicate face, which was covered by sunglasses.
“I knew it was you.”
On the other side of the round table, Chen Sheng smiled gently. Jiang Shining’s makeup and attire today gave off an aloof and unapproachable vibe, but he didn’t mind.
“Please sit, Madam.”
He gestured with his palm towards the seat next to him.
Jiang Shining remained motionless, still wearing sunglasses and staring at him. Her red lips already exuded a domineering aura, and when she didn’t smile, she appeared aloof.
Chen Sheng sighed, “I’m sorry, President Jiang, please give me some face and have a seat.”
Normally, seeing such a large round table with only two people, those who are close would sit together, while those who are not so close would sit a couple of seats apart. Jiang Shining, however, immediately sat down directly opposite Chen Sheng— or rather, Chen Jiacheng— with enough space between them for a car to pass.
Jiang Shining’s relationship with him was much better than her relationship with Xiu Lingfei. So the two could still sit at the same table and have a meal together, but given the distance…
“Why don’t you just sit in the corridor since you’re sitting so far away?” Chen Sheng couldn’t help but say.
Jiang Shining took off her sunglasses, and he fell silent.
Jiang Shining and all her identities were strikingly similar in appearance, differing only in their level of sophistication. To Chen Sheng, Jiang Shining and Jiang Yiru were the same person. Although Jiang Yiru had an ordinary pretty appearance, her calm and elegant personality made her beautiful through her temperament.
Jiang Shining was truly beautiful, and coupled with her past personality, she left Chen Sheng speechless. He had seen countless beautiful women in his two lives, but Jiang Yiru seemed to be the one who was different.
Jiang Shining felt the man’s gaze almost glued to her face. Jiang Shining actually disliked this kind of look. She and Chen Sheng weren’t exactly enemies in their past lives, but she didn’t like men looking at her like she was prey.
“Chen Jiacheng,” Jiang Shining said, frowning.
Chen Sheng then came to his senses. He saw Jiang Shining’s expression and smiled, a smile that seemed to have a self-deprecating tone.
“What are you laughing at?” Jiang Shining asked.
“I can tell from your eyes that you don’t love me at all,” he said. “You said you loved me in your past life, and you were lying to me.”
Jiang Shining wanted to explain what had happened before to him, so as to clarify her attitude and stance. However, Chen Sheng had already said, “I think I know.”
He took a book out of his briefcase and waved it at Jiang Shining.
This book was about Jiang Shining carrying out a mission in a fictionalized version of the Republic of China.
“I’ve always had some questions about your changes,” he said. “Until this life, when I saw this book… the Jiang Yiru in it is the one I know. And I should have died by that person’s gun. But all of that has changed.”
“Your idea is correct,” Jiang Shining said.
She briefly recounted what had happened to Chen Sheng.
