Cheng Linshi still wanted to act like a rogue, but Cheng Jian came over and pulled her back.

“Mom, stop talking. Let’s listen to the village chief and return the land to the Qin family.”

The village chief had the most authority in a village, responsible for managing the conflicts of interest among the villagers.

Their Cheng family had lived here for generations; it was not worth offending the village chief for a few acres of land.

Besides, the Qin family was in the right. If they refused to return it, and the Qin family really reported it to the police, their Cheng family would suffer even greater losses. Going to jail these days wasn’t a good thing.

Cheng Linshi naturally understood this, but she was just unwilling to accept it. It should be that Qin Yunzheng, that damned girl, taking things from the Qin family to pay them tribute, not taking things from the Cheng family to give to the Qin family.

The old woman seemed to have completely forgotten that the land originally belonged to the Qin family; it was just returning it to its rightful owner. How did it become the Qin family taking things from the Cheng family?

“Fine, since the village chief has spoken, I’ll return it to the Qin family.” Cheng Linshi practically gritted her teeth as she compromised, having Zhang Li fetch the land use rights certificate and hand it to the village chief. But she finished by spitting, “It’s just three mu of barren land, not even paddy fields, only good for growing coarse grains. I don’t even want it!”

The villagers were speechless. If you don’t want it, why all the fuss? Pretending to care.

Li Shan handed the certificate to Yun Zheng. “Zheng girl, is there anything else?”

Yun Zheng smiled slightly.

“The land issue is resolved. Now let’s talk about the grain. For the past six years since my parents divorced, the Cheng family has used various excuses to swindle countless amounts of grain from me. I’m asking them to return it. Is that too much to ask?”

Although the situation wasn’t as harsh as during famines, for a backward village like theirs, grain was as precious as gold, a lifesaver in times of crisis.

Yun Zheng had given it to the Cheng family willingly before, and nobody could interfere. But now that Yun Zheng wanted it back, Li Shan, as the village chief, naturally had to uphold the villagers’ rights.

“You heartless brat! We’ve already given you back the land, and you still want grain? How can you be so greedy? Aren’t you afraid of getting sick from eating so much?”

Cheng Linshi yelled. Losing three mu of land had already pained her deeply; she absolutely wouldn’t part with a single grain of their family’s produce.

“Old woman Cheng, if you get sick, it’ll be you! That was originally our grain. What’s wrong with Nannan wanting it back? You black-hearted wretch! You’re greedy even with your own granddaughter! Aren’t you afraid of being struck by lightning on the street?”

Qin Baishi retorted arrogantly, secretly delighted. Her Nannan was protecting the Qin family and didn’t seem to care about Cheng Linshi at all, meaning that she, the maternal grandmother, was more important than Cheng Linshi, the paternal grandmother.

What could be happier than her precious Nannan liking her, the maternal grandmother, more than her paternal grandmother?

“If anyone’s going to be struck down, it should be your Qin family! Qin Yunzheng is my son Cheng Jian’s child. What’s wrong with her giving our Cheng family some grain? How is that considered deception?” Cheng Linshi exploded, suddenly sitting down on the ground, slapping her thighs and wailing, “My God, what sins has the Cheng family committed? To give birth to a little plague god! This is going to ruin the Cheng family! Old Cheng, if you know this in the afterlife, please show your power and take this old woman’s life with you! I don’t want to live anymore!”

“Quiet!” Li Shan stamped his foot, unable to bear it any longer.

“Old woman Cheng, we’re dealing with a problem now. Don’t bring your crying, tantrums, and threatening suicide tricks to my face. If you don’t even respect me, the village chief, I will absolutely not interfere in your Cheng family’s affairs anymore.”

Cheng Linshi was so frightened that she immediately fell silent. While Yun Zheng spoke up…

“Village Chief, I couldn’t distinguish right from wrong in the past. Logically speaking, my mother and father are divorced, and I was awarded to my mother. So the Qin family and the Cheng family have no relation whatsoever. The Cheng family hasn’t given me a single grain of food for so many years, yet they took advantage of my youth and ignorance to trick me into taking food from the Qin family. Now I’ve come to my senses. Considering that the Cheng family are also my relatives, I’ll let go of what I ate; consider it the Qin family doing charity. But the 60 jin of grain coupons, 30 jin of sugar coupons, and 50 feet of cloth coupons I gave to the Cheng family over the years should be returned.”

After all, Yun Zheng had a biological father and grandmother in the Cheng family, so she couldn’t be too harsh, otherwise people would gossip, which wouldn’t be good for the Qin family’s development in the village.

But even this was like cutting off a piece of her flesh, but she knew there was no way out, so she could only reluctantly hand over the coupons to the Qin family.

Just when everyone thought that was the end of it, Yun Zheng continued, “Grandma, I don’t need the money back. But you still have to return the tables, chairs, pots, and pans you took from the Qin family. Our family is large; we can’t do without them.”

“You!” Cheng Linshi was dizzy and trembling.

“You brat, are you trying to force us to our deaths? Don’t forget, the Qin family is just a collateral branch of your family. We are your direct relatives. How can you help outsiders harm your own family?”
