A hint of guilt flashed in Cheng Xuening’s eyes as she vehemently denied it, “You’re slandering me! Tianzhi and I are completely innocent; it’s not what you’re saying.”

“I was just asking because I didn’t know. What do you think I meant?”

Yun Zheng feigned grievance, but the villagers, who were more experienced in such matters, took it all in stride. Cheng Xuening’s reaction was clearly a case of protesting too much.

“So, it turns out that Ning’er was actually eyeing the man her sister liked!”

“She always pretended to be so well-behaved and sensible, but she’s actually a shameless slut? Even if she’s shameless, she shouldn’t be eyeing her sister’s man.”

“And she knows Xu Zhiqing so well; have they already secretly pledged their lives to each other? And she deliberately let Zheng’er pursue him, using her as a shield for them?”

Alas, these words inadvertently hit the nail on the head, and Cheng Xuening’s face turned deathly pale.

“At such a young age, she’s already mastered her mother’s tricks for seducing men.”

These were the words of Sister-in-law Lou, clearly referring to Zhang Li’s affair with Yun Zheng’s father.

Zhang Li and Cheng Jian were instantly mortified, wishing they could dig a hole and disappear.

“Cheng Xuening, you heartless brat! How dare you harm my daughter!”

Qin Baishi suddenly charged forward in fury, tackling Cheng Xuening to the ground and tearing at her.

“My granddaughter considers you her sister, and you ruined her reputation and tried to kill her! How could you be so vicious? This old woman will make you pay with your life today!”

Qin Baishi had married young and was only 55 years old. Years of manual labor had kept her strong, and Cheng Xuening was no match for her. In a flash, her hair became a mess, and bright red finger marks appeared on her face.

She was in pain and terrified, feeling disfigured, and screamed, “Mom, Mom, help! My face, my face, it hurts so much!”

Yun Zheng almost wanted to applaud Qin Baishi; what a formidable old lady!

Zhang Li was extremely anxious, but as a junior, she couldn’t fight back against her elders. “Mom, Cheng Jian, quickly pull Old Lady Qin away! Xuening is going to be beaten to death!”

Cheng Linshi was also frightened by Qin Baishi’s display of force and dared not intervene. After all, it wasn’t Fugui who was being beaten, and Cheng Jian couldn’t do anything to Qin Baishi either. However, he couldn’t bear to see his stepdaughter being beaten, so he looked pleadingly at Yun Zheng.

“Zheng girl, stop it! Tell your grandmother to stop.”

Yun Zheng thought it best to know when to stop, as going too far would be bad for their family. So she went up and patted Qin Baishi’s shoulder, saying, “Grandma, that’s enough. Don’t hurt yourself.”

Qin Baishi immediately stopped, looking at her granddaughter with heartache.

“My dear girl, you’ve really suffered.”

Cheng Xuening, her hair disheveled, lay on the ground, covering her burning face and crying bitterly.

Yun Zheng addressed the surrounding villagers directly, “Fellow villagers, we in Xianan Village are all genuine farmers. Farmers depend on food for survival, and our livelihood depends mainly on the harvest from the land. The Cheng family took three mu of land from the Qin family, and we can’t even afford to eat anymore. But the Cheng family refuses to return it. I treat the Cheng family like family and have helped them in every way. But the Cheng family only cares about taking without giving anything back. Tell me, who can accept such relatives? Shouldn’t I take back the land that belongs to the Qin family?”

“Of course you should! Yun Zheng is right. The Qin family is so poor they can’t even afford to eat. The Cheng family not only doesn’t offer to help, but they also want to seize their land!”

This isn’t the old collective system anymore. With the policy of distributing land to individual households, all villagers pay public grain purchases based on the area of their land. This means that based on the size of the land allocated, they have to pay the corresponding amount of grain according to the national grain purchase standards.

They only knew that Yun Zheng usually helped the Cheng family, but they never expected that she would even give them land and take three mu of land from the Qin family. Wasn’t she trying to drive the Qin family to their deaths?

The villagers were stirred up and started shouting. Although they knew about the Cheng family’s bad character, they had too many of their own problems to care about others.

But since the village chief was there, everyone naturally wanted to show their sense of justice.

Seeing that the situation had completely changed, Cheng Linshi became anxious and started cursing, “What business is this of yours? Have you fed your chickens and ducks? Get out of my house!”

“Old woman Cheng, are you trying to kick me out?”

Li Shan’s face turned completely gloomy.

Cheng Linshi, her face full of flattery, said, “Village Chief, don’t misunderstand. That’s not what I meant at all. My granddaughter is just young and sensible, so she’s talking nonsense. Don’t listen to her.”

“Zheng’er said you took her family’s land. If that’s true, you’d better return the land use certificate to her right now!”

Li Shan sneered. Someone dared to seize land right under his nose, showing no respect for him.

Cheng Linshi’s expression changed.

“No way! That was given to me by my granddaughter. It’s my family’s land, and no one can take it away!”

Yun Zheng said with a smile, “Grandma, I think you’re getting senile. This land belongs to the state. No one can illegally occupy it; otherwise, they’re breaking the law!”

“You heartless brat! What, you want to sue your grandma? Are you trying to rebel?!” Cheng Linshi hated Yun Zheng, thinking how unlucky it was that the little brat hadn’t drowned. If she were dead, she wouldn’t be causing all this trouble.

The village chief, with a stern face…

“Alright, if you want to stay in Xianan Village, you’d better follow the rules. If you don’t listen, then I’ll let Zheng Ya report you to the police and have your whole family go to jail. I will not allow anyone to disrupt the village’s food production!”

The author has something to say:

After this outburst begins the heroine’s journey of struggle. This book is different from my previous works; I didn’t want to write too much tragic romance, so the love scenes are all very smooth and sweet.

The male lead won’t be overpowered from the start; I’ve written a more slice-of-life style.
