“Madam fainted again at the gate. Her health really isn’t good; she faints so easily.”

Ba Liang, after wandering around outside, returned with a smug look on his face, reporting, “It’s Niu Erji’s mother who came to demand compensation, causing a huge commotion in front of the mansion.”

“That old woman is incredibly strong; even three or five rough-looking women couldn’t hold her back. She’s been threatening suicide in front of the mansion, and Madam can’t do anything about it.”

“The two officials from the Demon Suppression Division watched and offered some advice, but now the master has invited them to the back hall for a talk.”

“Yu Pianpian hasn’t come out since returning to her courtyard. It seems she’s not planning to complain to the madam? I find that a bit strange,” Ba Liang said with a grin. “But it makes sense, the madam is still unconscious in bed, so she can’t find anyone to complain to.”

Jiu Jin couldn’t help but shake his head with a smile. “This fake heiress doesn’t seem like someone who gives up easily. I think she’ll continue to cause trouble.”

Yu Linlang was tending to her precious flowers and plants by the window, not even raising her head when she heard this. “If the case is related to the Niu family, Lord Chen might persuade Governor Yu to keep them here.”

At the same time, Governor Yu paced back and forth in the flower hall with his hands behind his back, barely suppressing the anger in his heart.

“Keep her in my residence? Absolutely not!”

“That arrogant old woman has even angered my wife. And you expect me to keep her here? Lord Chen, are you trying to make me busy?”

“Lord Yu, please let me explain.” Chen Buyu wasn’t annoyed and spoke to him politely, “Judging from the current case, it’s highly likely it’s revenge.”

“I told you last time it was revenge, but you didn’t believe me! The murderer clearly targeted the Niu family. Our steward is muddle-headed; he didn’t investigate the situation before hiring anyone.”

They’d picked up a pair of troublemakers, causing unrest throughout the governor’s mansion.

“I’ve already sent people to investigate the Niu family. There are only two brothers in the family, and their mother, Aunt Niu, is a strong-willed woman who doesn’t get along well with her neighbors.”

“Minor conflicts are common, but to say it would escalate to murder is something no one in the village would do.”

Governor Yu turned around with a grim face. “So you mean the culprit isn’t a relative of the Niu family?”

“When we found Aunt Niu on East Street, we also encountered a suspicious person. We sent people to chase him for half the street, but they couldn’t catch him.”

Governor Yu’s spirits lifted. “Someone even your Demon Suppression Division couldn’t catch— what else could he be but a demon? It’s definitely not a human crime!”

Chen Buyu put down his teacup and interrupted, “Governor, have you considered that the culprit might be a martial arts master?”

“So that’s how it is? This old woman is in great danger now?” Governor Yu paced back and forth in the hall. “Lord Chen, this old woman is causing a scene at my gate, is that your doing?”

Lord Chen looked helpless. “How could I do such a thing? In fact, we have no choice. This old woman feels that her son and daughter-in-law died in your residence, and she insists on demanding an explanation.”

“That’s the situation now.” Lord Chen looked at Governor Yu with a leisurely air. “I suggest that since the culprit’s next target is very likely to be this old woman, why not put her under our watchful eyes at the governor’s residence?”

“If we can lure the culprit out from the shadows, that would be even better. What does the governor think?”

The governor was naturally very unhappy.

“You want to lure the murderer out of my residence? How can the safety of all the women in my household be guaranteed?”

“If the governor’s mansion in Weizhou City isn’t safe, where else can we find a safer place?” Chen Buyu replied slowly and deliberately. “This is also for the sake of solving the case, so please don’t refuse, Governor.”

“Or does the governor want me to trouble the heir again?”

Governor Yu was extremely annoyed.

Thinking of the heir’s private conversation with him earlier, specifically instructing him to do his utmost to assist Governor Chen in solving the case as soon as possible, he felt incredibly frustrated.

His home was in chaos, and things were even more hectic outside.

Currently, more than a dozen starving people were falling ill every day outside the city, and the situation was quite dire.

Experienced physicians even predicted that if the situation continued without improvement, an epidemic might break out.

This greatly worried the governor.

“An epidemic! That’s no joke.”

“Lord Yu?”

One matter had to be resolved; he couldn’t be caught in a dilemma.

Governor Yu gritted his teeth, “Alright!”

….

That night, Yu Linlang finished washing up and sat by her dressing mirror, casually flipping through a medical book.

Ba Liang and Jiu Jin tidied her bed and gently called to her, “Miss, the candlelight is dim; don’t hurt your eyes. It’s getting late; rest.”

Yu Linlang nodded, “Did the medicinal herbs arrive today?”

Ba Liang hummed in agreement, “They arrived; they’re temporarily stored in the south warehouse along with the rice.”

“Tomorrow, go and invite the doctor from Huichun Hall over. Have them process the medicinal herbs we brought.”

“They’ve been in Weizhou City for a long time; they know where to find reliable female workers. Ask them to help find some diligent women; I have something to instruct them to do.”

“Okay!” The two maids didn’t ask what it was about; whatever their young lady ordered, it was sure to be right.

The two readily agreed, made the bed, and left.

Not long after Yu Linlang lay down, she heard a rustling sound from the eaves.

She sat up in the darkness, her eyes bright, staring towards the window.

Soon, the main courtyard was brightly lit and bustling with activity.

Yu Linlang quickly dressed, and as soon as she opened the door, the two maids, Ba Liang and Jiu Jin, rushed to her side.

“Something’s happened at the main courtyard,” Ba Liang said breathlessly. “I just went over and checked. Someone sneaked into the governor’s mansion, heading straight for Old Lady Niu.”

“Now both Lord Chen and Governor Yu are alarmed, and they’re leading men to search the mansion for the assassin.”

Yu Linlang raised an eyebrow. “Is Chen Buyu staying here today?”

“Yes, he said he was staying to help out, to see if Old Lady Niu could lure the culprit out.” Ba Liang grinned. “It seems the culprit did come, but they didn’t seem to catch anyone.”

The three of them, mistress and servants, took three small stools and sat by the door, each grabbing a handful of peanuts.

“Sigh, I wonder how long this will go on.”

Yu Qiuping from across the hall also came out to peek and seeing them sitting in a row by the door, she smiled, nodded, and went back inside.

“Recently, Eldest Miss seems a bit more pleasing to the eye.” Jiu Jin peeled a peanut and popped it into his mouth.

Suddenly, a crisp sound came from the roof.

The three looked up and saw a dark, broad figure carrying a burlap sack, quickly leaping over the roof and running into the distance.

Lanterns and torches, accompanied by the clamor of people, approached the Yulan Courtyard.

Governor Yu, his hair disheveled, led his entourage through the gate, and guards quickly rushed in to check everything.
