One demon was expressionless, the other’s face was full of chicken soup (a Chinese idiom for excessive pampering), and the two faced each other silently, the blue egg between them particularly conspicuous.
Shen Jue’s chin twitched slightly, clearly suppressing his temper and the urge to crack open her head.
You Xu stroked the egg and said slowly, “I don’t know what kind of egg this is, so I wanted to hatch it to see. If my body temperature was warm enough, I wouldn’t need to borrow your butt.”
Her words only made Shen Jue’s brow twitch again.
You Xu hugged the egg, shrank into the blankets, burying her head in them, and remained motionless for a long time, looking extremely dejected.
Shen Jue’s heart softened, and he was about to comfort her and compromise when he heard You Xu say reassuringly, “I’m just afraid you’ll get petted bald. If a fluffy little thing hatches, you can take the time to grow its fur.”
“…” Shen Jue twitched his lips and ordered someone to fetch a demon.
A pheasant demon was summoned. As soon as he stood still, an egg was shoved into his hand. His hand trembled, and he hesitated, asking, “Your Majesty, you mean…”
Shen Jue said sternly, “You incubate it.”
The pheasant demon was greatly shocked: “Your Majesty, but I’m male, males don’t incubate…” His words were cut short by Shen Jue’s cold gaze.
You Xu patted the egg, looking as if entrusting it with a heavy responsibility, and said with a smile, “Brother Pheasant, thank you for your trouble.”
“…” The pheasant demon wiped his sweat, “I wouldn’t dare.”
You Xu: “Remember to show me what hatches.”
The pheasant demon looked up and saw Shen Jue’s “You dare come back?” expression and immediately didn’t know how to respond to You Xu. Fortunately, You Xu waved him away to incubate the egg. With this matter resolved, You Xu buried herself in the quilt, intending to rest some more, when Shen Jue dug her up for breakfast. Shen Jue watched her finish her breakfast and left. You Xu guessed that perhaps his volatile temper made him more suited to causing destruction.
….
Inside the Luhua Manor, deathly silence reigned like a graveyard. Layers of blood snaked across the ground like a dark red carpet, severed limbs and remains littering the ground. The expressions of shock and terror on the faces of the demon hunters hadn’t faded, their bodies still warm, yet they were already dead.
The Luhua Manor’s plaque lay shattered on the ground, a pair of silver-white soft boots treading over it.
“Bang—” The door to the secret chamber slammed shut automatically. Song Weihua leaned against the wall, panting. He slowly sat down against the wall, cautiously scanning the stone door before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
This was the safest secret chamber within the Luhua Manor, filled with countless magical arrays. No one knew of this place except for him, the manor’s lord.
Song Weihua had single-handedly built the Luhua Manor into a renowned name among demon hunter manors. He believed that even if the entire manor was slaughtered, as long as he survived, he could rebuild it.
Just then, he took out a piece of red meat from his pocket. The meat was torn and gnawed to pieces, yet its color was incredibly vibrant red, and one could vaguely discern that it had once been a heart. This was the heart of the Heart-Eating Fox, which Song Weihua had dug from a female fox during the fox-slaying campaign. The female fox was undergoing a century-long tribulation to transform into human form and had several fatal wounds. He happened to witness this, and Song Weihua took her heart and ate it, thus rising from an ordinary demon hunter to the current master of the Ming Mansion.
However, he only ate half the heart; the remaining half he greedily kept in his bosom, gnawing and licking it day and night, enjoying what others so desperately craved.
Song Weihua, like a madman, his expression twisted, couldn’t help but rub a little bit of the heart meat between his teeth.
The Heart-Eating Fox’s heart would forever be vibrant, forever enduring.
“Thump— Bang—” Some external force struck, and the stone door of the secret chamber collapsed with a loud crash, sending up a cloud of dust and debris.
Hearing the commotion, Song Weihua had already escaped through another secret passage in the chamber. In the narrow, dark passage, he could only hear his own footsteps and heartbeat.
As he ran, he desperately stuffed the flesh in his hands into his mouth, the taste of blood filling his mouth, his teeth stained with crimson.
“Haha, it’s all mine, all mine!” Song Weihua said frantically.
“Ugh.” A white shadow flashed by, and Song Weihua was lifted by the neck and shoved into the wall.
A pair of hands gripped Song Weihua’s neck tightly. He struggled desperately, his face flushed, the veins on his neck bulging. He saw the handsome man before him, his eyes cold, his expression sinister.
“You haven’t even reached the hundred-year mark… the Transformation… Transformation stage, and you’ve already taken human form.”
“Do you think the other Demon Slayers’ Mansions will let you go after you kill me?”
“Sooner or later you’ll meet your heartless clansmen on the road to the Yellow Springs, hahahahahaha…”
Song Weihua’s hoarse laughter echoed in the empty, narrow passage, chillingly cold.
Shen Jue scoffed, his eyes dark and menacing. His other hand extended a silver claw, plunging directly into Song Weihua’s heart.
“Ahhhhh—” Song Weihua’s laughter instantly turned into a scream, his face contorted in agony, his body convulsing. He felt his heart being torn apart by the claws, the dull pain stretching endlessly.
Shen Jue didn’t deliver the fatal blow, but instead spared his last breath, slowly tearing apart his flesh until his heart was completely ripped apart and his chest hollowed out, before finally tossing the bloody mess on the ground.
Shen Jue released his grip and left without a second thought.
Song Weihua slid to the ground like a lifeless rag, a gaping wound in his chest, his wide-open eyes still open.
In the darkest corner of the passage, Shen Jue closed his eyes briefly, his vision filled with crimson. He saw that vivid image again.
His sister on the day of her transformation into human form. She led him, a young fox, on a desperate escape, her back forming a protective wall around him, a wall scarred with sword and knife wounds. She hid him in a tree and cast a spell to immobilize him for an hour. So he could only watch as Song Weihua ripped out her heart, leaving her young fox body to wither and dry into a desiccated corpse.
When Shen Jue opened his eyes again, they were bloodshot, filled with boundless killing intent. His sharp claws grew longer and longer, as if he wanted to tear apart all living things.
Dark red demonic energy swirled around him. His robes fluttered as he stepped out of the secret passage.
The afternoon sun was shining brightly, a gentle breeze brushed his face, and a familiar fragrance cleared his mind somewhat.
Shen Jue stopped, the bloodlust fading from his vision. He saw a small white flower swaying gently in the sunlight.
It was that familiar feeling again.
It seemed he had seen this flower countless times, and he had smelled its fragrance at some point before.
A comforting scent.
It seemed there was someone connected to this little white flower, but he couldn’t remember.
….
You Xu was sunbathing on the soft couch in the courtyard. She had been asleep when 78 suddenly alerted her that Shen Jue’s “darkening value” had risen to 75. Startled, she jumped up to find Shen Jue, but before she could even put on her shoes, she heard 78 say that his “darkening value” had dropped to 50.
You Xu said sternly, “Is your AI malfunctioning?”
78, holding its match head, looked puzzled and said, “That’s impossible. I think I’m pretty accurate, right?”
It’s unclear what psychological process Shen Jue went through, but as soon as the alarm was lifted, You Xu wanted to sleep again. However, she was jolted awake and couldn’t regain her afternoon nap. So, she asked 78 to download the flower charts for this world so she could plant some flowers nearby, since there was a large open space around. The flowers in this world were quite different from those in her original world; there were many strange and unusual flowers, even more poisonous ones, and some combinations of flowers could also cause poisoning.
Since You Xu increased Shen Jue’s trust level and received points as a reward, 78 started exercising with jump rope, dumbbells, and stationary bikes, living a life of luxury using other people’s points. It had completely let itself go and rarely interacted with You Xu mentally.
You Xu had no choice but to browse the flower charts in her mind. After a while, she became sleepy, squinting slightly. She vaguely saw the corner of a white garment, yawned, and forced her eyelids open.
The afternoon sunlight shone on the tender leaves, and the dappled light and shadow fell on his shoulders.
Shen Jue was covered in blood, his sinister aura still lingering, like a fierce demon emerging from hell. Yet, in his hand, he clutched a pure white flower.
You Xu hesitated, “You…”
Shen Jue replied, “This blood isn’t mine, don’t worry.”
You Xu looked at the flower; its shape, petals, and stem resembled jasmine, and its fragrance was similar, only fainter.
She quickly searched the world’s flower encyclopaedia and found the flower. It was called Feng Jin, and its only difference from jasmine was that two Feng Jin flowers grew on the same stem. If one was broken, the other would quickly wither. Therefore, its flower language was—uniqueness.
“Do you like these flowers?” Shen Jue raised the corner of his eye. “Then I’ll give them to you.”
You Xu was stunned for a while, then suddenly remembered an afternoon when she woke up on the sofa and saw the balcony covered in soil and small flowerpots. Duan Min was holding a small yellow plastic shovel as he smiled at her: “You like jasmine, so I’ll plant more for you.”
In the same clear light, Duan Min’s delicate features overlapped with Shen Jue’s handsome appearance.
You Xu’s nose tingled, and she looked away.
“78, don’t you think Shen Jue and Duan Min are quite similar sometimes?”
78 didn’t speak for a moment.
You Xu asked again: “Could they be the same person, or am I actually targeting the same person?”
78 then said: “Host, you’re overthinking it. It’s impossible. Don’t act on emotion. Love can blind you.”
78’s tone was very certain, which made You Xu’s heart feel empty, as if a cold wind had blown in, making her much more awake.
You Xu composed herself and looked up to see Shen Jue kneeling down, meeting her gaze.
He was covered in blood, his eyes a faint crimson after the killing intent had faded. The pure white flower seemed out of place against him, yet it was like the last pure color in his heart.
In his dark eyes, there was the flower, and there was her.
He opened the flower in his palm and offered it to her, asking softly, “Do you like it?”
Who would have thought that a demon king, feared by demon hunters and demons alike, would hold the most delicate and pure white flower in his hands? You Xu’s heart trembled. She reached out and took the Feng Jing flower, gently stroking it, lowering her eyelashes, her voice soft and gentle—
“I like it.”
