Gu Ming returned to the research base and told Professor Gu that he had drunk the nutrient solution.

“Looks like we’ll have to find someone else to try it on…” Professor Gu shook his head regretfully. Superhumans had antibodies against the zombie virus, although the antibodies weren’t strong, as long as the virus was within their tolerance range, there won’t be a problem.

Therefore, the nutrient solution could only be researched on ordinary people.

“Professor, how about I do it?” Gu Ming said. Although food at the base was becoming increasingly scarce, who would willingly try something unknown? One wrong move, and they’d either become a superhuman or a zombie.

Becoming a superhuman would be great, but the chances were very small. Nobody dared to take that risk.

On Chen Yuanshou’s side, at Chen Song’s request, Zhang Zhongmin tied him up tightly. After confirming there was no loosening, he clapped his hands and stood aside.

The chance of a superhuman getting infected was very small, both Chen Song and Zhang Zhongmin knew that. But it was better to be safe than sorry. After all, nobody knew what the nutrient solution research had actually achieved.

The next day at noon, Chen Yuanshou finally woke up.

Overnight, Chen Song showed no unusual changes, and his temperature didn’t spike. So Zhang Zhongmin untied him, but still kept watch. When Chief Chen woke up, he rushed to find Chen Song and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Chen Song standing there unharmed.

However, Zhang Zhongmin could see that Chief Chen’s body was deteriorating even more.

“Ah Song, come here.” Chief Chen beckoned to Chen Song, then said to Zhang Zhongmin, “Xiao Zhang, you go out first, we’ll talk for a while.”

Zhang Zhongmin nodded, turned and walked out.

….

After leaving the Rising Sun Base, Fu Ke didn’t notice anything unusual when she released her mental energy to check on Number Eight, so she didn’t pay any attention to that side.

In addition, Number Eight was heavily surrounded by a horde of zombies. Many small bases like that had fallen, so Fu Ke didn’t notice the unusual zombie inside.

Therefore, Fu Ke turned her attention to City B.

In her previous life, her death was because of Lan Zhi. In this life, Lan Zhi was gone. Could it be that because of her appearance, he was replaced by someone else?

In any case, Fu Ke decided to go to the Yonghui Base in City B to take a look.

Because Fu Ke was very fast, the skinny man who had hurriedly chased after her couldn’t find her at all. Moreover, he didn’t know which direction Fu Ke had gone, and finally returned to the base empty-handed.

Although worried, the skinny guy quickly put his mind at ease. After all, Xiao Bai was different now than before. In this apocalypse, there was no one who could be considered Xiao Bai’s match.

The Rising Sun Base quickly began construction. Wang Zhen suggested building the walls first, modeled after the Great Wall, and then gradually planning the internal layout.

Even if the base didn’t need to defend against zombies, it should still be wary of humans.

Because of what happened with Liu Wei, the base commander of the Glorious Base, Wang Zhen was extremely wary and suspicious of humans other than those currently in the base.

Conversely, Lu Xun had saved him and his wife. Fu Ke was a zombie, and the people at the Rising Sun Base had taken them in. After confirming that Fu Ke wouldn’t eat people, they trusted the people at the Rising Sun Base completely.

“The most important thing now is to go out and find people, even if we have to kidnap them,” Qin Long said.

“But, Brother Long, where do we go to look?” The skinny guy asked, a twig dangling from his mouth. The apocalypse wasn’t like before; finding people wasn’t easy. Now, finding people, especially construction workers, was even more difficult.

Everyone was clueless about this.

Qin Long thought for a moment: “Let’s go to S City.”

He was from S City and had dealt with construction workers before. If they could run into acquaintances in S City, it would be much more convenient. After all, this was the apocalypse, and if they kidnapped someone and brought them back, it could cause a lot of trouble later.

Fu Ke wasn’t there, and Xiao Hei and Lan Zhi couldn’t leave the base, otherwise the base would definitely be in chaos, since it was mostly infested with zombies.

So, it wasn’t as safe for them to go looking for people now as before; they would still be attacked by zombies. There were quite a few level-five zombies now.

If they kidnapped someone and brought them back, it would be a hindrance and might even increase the danger.

“Brother Long, S City? That’s so far!” The skinny man looked at Qin Long in disbelief. To get to S City, they would have to pass through D City; the journey was too far!

“It is a bit far, but without construction workers, building our base will be extremely difficult.” Although they had built a base in their previous life, it was just a small fenced-off area. It was no different from the Radiant Base that had been built here before.

“So, it’s best if we go to S City to take a look,” Qin Long said to them. “Xiao Hei and Lan Zhi stay here to guard the base. The rest of you come with me.”

Wang Zhen hesitated for a moment: “My wife’s postpartum period isn’t over yet…”

At this moment, Liu Yue walked over. She wasn’t wearing the postpartum clothes Fu Ke had given her, but her own clothes: “It’s been thirty days, I’m fine. In the apocalypse, who’s so delicate?”

Usually, the postpartum period was forty days, but many people finished in thirty. Liu Yue felt that there were very few people like her who were still in postpartum confinement in the apocalypse, maybe none at all.

“Wife.” Wang Zhen smiled as he saw Liu Yue come out.

Qin Long looked at Liu Yue: “You and your daughter stay here, Feng Han will stay to take care of you, and Qiu Yingying stays too.”

“Why!” Qiu Yingying immediately protested. Although it was safe to stay in the base, she always felt useless.

“Feng Han and Liu Yue need to eat and drink. How can they manage without you?” Qin Long asked.

“But… I’m not here to cook for them.” Qiu Yingying scratched her head, annoyed. “My recent training in superpowers has yielded results. I can help, I definitely won’t hold them back!”

Feng Han chuckled. She wondered when Qiu Yingying had become so concerned about her usefulness. In her opinion, Qiu Yingying, with her superpowers, was far more useful.

“Sister Qiu, Sister Liu’s baby needs you,” Qiu Yi said earnestly. After all, the baby was only a month old, and Liu Yue’s breast milk wasn’t enough; so she had to drink formula.

Even if Qiu Yi left them a case of bottled water, who knew how long it would take to get to S City?

The skinny guy patted Qiu Yi: “Just bring out more bottled water, okay? Let her go if she wants to.”

Qiu Yingying looked at the skinny guy, her eyes sparkling with gratitude.

“But there are only four cases of bottled water in the space!” Qiu Yi glared at the skinny guy, displeased. Two cases of bottled water should be enough for them if they used them sparingly.

But these four cases of mineral water will be useful later.

“Hey, you brat, you call me ‘Master’ when you need something, but you dare to glare at me when you don’t?” The skinny man grabbed Qiu Yi’s neck and roughly squeezed his head.

“Let go, let me go!” Qiu Yi struggled and shouted, “You said you weren’t my Master!”

That was so long ago, and this kid still remembers. The skinny man released Qiu Yi with a wry smile.

“Leave two cases of mineral water for them. If Qiu Yingying is here, we won’t lack water to drink,” Qin Long said. After all, Qiu Yingying had water-based abilities, so why would she be afraid of running out of water?

Qiu Yi couldn’t help but look at Qin Long.

Ever since he called her Sister Fu “Xiao Bai” that day, he seemed to have changed completely. What was that saying again? A complete transformation? That doesn’t seem right.

But he really was very different from before, even his aura was different. He seemed to have the commanding posture of someone who had been in a superior position for a long time, but somehow it felt like this was the right way.

Fu Ke had left a truck at the base. Wang Zhen hugged Liu Yue and then got in.

Liu Yue actually wanted to go too, but although she had awakened her earth-elemental ability, it wasn’t very useful. Besides, her baby was only a month old…

Gritting her teeth, watching Wang Zhen drive away, Liu Yue resolved to practice her ability diligently, both for her baby and for Wang Zhen.

Wang Zhen and Liu Yue’s daughter, Wang Qianqian, opened her eyes to find the surroundings empty and deserted. Always accompanied by someone, she pouted and burst into tears.

The sound was deafening, startling even the zombies in the base.

If the zombies hadn’t been suppressed by Fu Ke and changed from eating people to eating crystal cores, they would have been attracted by Wang Qianqian by now.

Feng Han and Liu Yue were also startled and rushed back, only to see the little one in the crib struggling and crying her heart out.

Sensing their approach, the crying abruptly stopped, and the child opened her large, round eyes, her black and white pupils sparkling innocently as she looked at them.

Wang Qianqian, usually very well-behaved, now beamed with a toothless smile upon seeing them. So innocent and adorable.

The child had inherited all the best features of Liu Yue and Wang Zhen, born a very beautiful child.

“This little one…” Feng Han chuckled, speechless.

“She just needs someone to stay by her side.” Seeing the little one reach out for a hug, Liu Yue picked up Wang Qianqian, and the little one snuggled against her.

Liu Yue was exasperated; Wang Qianqian was like a little pig, eating and sleeping, sleeping and eating again.

Two trucks sped towards S City, one driven by Qin Long and the other by Lan Sheng. Having stayed at the base for so long, Lan Sheng and his group were bored, and now that they could finally travel further, they felt much more relaxed.

B City.

After speaking with Chen Song, Chen Yuanshou stopped breathing. Chen Song cried uncontrollably, unable to accept the fact that his only remaining family member had also left him.

Hearing the crying inside, Zhang Zhongmin pushed open the door and went in. Chen Yuanshou was no longer breathing.

His face was peaceful, and he had passed away quietly, seemingly without any pain. However, while Chen Yuanshou had left peacefully, the living…

Zhang Zhongmin’s eyes stung with tears. He went over and patted Chen Song’s shoulder.

However, Chen Song pushed Zhang Zhongmin away: “Get out! Get out! Who let you in? Get out!”

Chen Song was in the midst of grief; how could he possibly give Zhang Zhongmin, whom he disliked, a pleasant look?

“I haven’t gone home yet since I got back. I’ll go back first. If you need anything, have someone come find me.” After saying this, Zhang Zhongmin left without waiting for Chen Song’s reaction.

After leaving the room, seeing the blazing sun outside, Zhang Zhongmin looked up at the sky and sighed softly.

Only then did he leave.

However, after leaving President Chen’s residence, Zhang Zhongmin found that people who hadn’t yet received news of President Chen’s death were gathered in small groups, discussing something animatedly.

He then noticed a place tightly surrounded by people whispering amongst themselves, their voices so loud and chaotic that he couldn’t make out what they were talking about.

He paused, then walked over.

He patted one person on the shoulder and asked, “What happened?”

The man looked at Zhang Zhongmin, not recognizing him and treating him as an ordinary person, and said with a worried expression, “I heard that the professor President Chen brought back is going to select experimental subjects at the base.”

“Experimental subjects?” Zhang Zhongmin frowned. “What experimental subjects?”

The man gestured with his chin, pointing to a piece of white paper on the wall, and said, “Doesn’t it say there are? They say they’ve developed a nutrient solution, so everyone won’t have to go hungry anymore. The nutrient solution is extracted from food.”

Currently, plants and animals carried viruses, but only humans had mutated. However, this had also led to the inedibility of both plants and animals. The nutrient solution was extracted from these substances; it was filling and provided nutrition.

However, the notice also stated that the success rate was 80%, with a 20% chance that the extracted nutrient solution would still contain the virus. They had already done their best to eliminate the virus from the nutrient solution.

Therefore, someone needed to test it.

It was also stated that those with superpowers possessed antibodies, so the test subjects had to be ordinary people.

This immediately caused a stir in the base.

Zhang Zhongmin hadn’t expected Professor Gu to act so quickly. It must have been Gu Ming who went back and told Professor Gu that it wasn’t Chief Chen who drank the nutrient solution, but Chen Song.
