After finishing dinner, Aunt Li washed the dishes and turned on the TV to watch a drama. After two episodes, she glanced at the clock and saw it was already 9:30. It was time for the child to go to bed, but Ji Xiaozhuo was still playing on the sofa. Aunt Li patted his back and said, “Xiao Zhuo, it’s 9:30. You should take a bath and go to bed.”
Hearing this, Ji Xiaozhuo looked up at the clock, pursed his lips, and looked reluctantly at the tablet in his hands. He then said in a childish voice, “Grandma Li, I want to wait a little longer before I go to sleep.”
Aunt Li looked at the tablet in his hands, sighed, and patted his head. “Xiao Zhuo, it’s already 9:30. Daddy won’t video chat with you tonight. He’s probably on a mission. He’ll video chat with you when he gets back. Why don’t you go to sleep first?”
Ji Xiaozhuo lowered his head and remained silent for a moment, then touched the tablet and looked up at Aunt Li, pleading, “Then can I wait a little longer? Maybe Daddy will come to find me soon.”
Aunt Li sighed and nodded, “Alright then, you can wait another half hour before taking a shower and going to bed.”
Ji Xiaozhuo nodded, his eyes still glued to the tablet.
Tang Tang sat silently on the sofa, her gaze also fixed on the tablet, wondering why the little one kept staring at it, and what the video call meant.
After another half hour, Aunt Li didn’t allow Ji Xiaozhuo to wait any longer and put the tablet away. “Alright, Xiao Zhuo, it’s ten o’clock. Daddy won’t be looking for you tonight. Come with me to take a shower and go to bed.”
Ji Xiaozhuo lowered his head and remained silent. After a while, he silently climbed off the sofa and followed Aunt Li into the room. However, Tang Tang noticed that the little guy’s eyes were red, as if he was about to cry.
The baby seemed very sad. Was he waiting for news from his father? Was he sad because he hadn’t received it? But military discipline was very strict; they generally couldn’t casually go out. The little one must miss his father.
Tang Tang walked back to her room to wash up, her mind racing. After finally figuring out what to do and getting herself clean, she was exhausted, but lying in bed, she couldn’t fall asleep. Her mind was a jumbled mess, unable to settle. Thinking of the little guy with red eyes, she couldn’t sleep anymore. So, she quietly opened her bedroom door, limped over to the little guy’s door, and gently turned the doorknob.
The bedside lamp was still on, probably for the little guy’s convenience when he needed to use the bathroom at night. The little guy was fast asleep, wearing only his underwear, his mouth slightly open, his chubby little arms and legs spread out in a starfish shape, his little belly rising and falling with his breath. Listening closely, she could even hear soft snoring. Tang Tang smiled involuntarily, reaching out to gently squeeze the little bundle’s chubby hand, her heart melting.
Although she wasn’t his real mother, she was now his mother, and she was willing to be his mother, to take care of him and treat him well. Otherwise, what was the point of her coming here? She had always dreamed of having a family, and now that she finally did, family was her everything. Without them, she didn’t know where she would go.
Tang Tang watched quietly for a while until drowsiness overcame her. Then she gently kissed the little guy’s forehead, tucked him in, and quietly returned to her room.
The next day, when Tang Tang woke up, Aunt Li was making breakfast in the kitchen. The little guy was sitting at the table, swinging his short legs, waiting to eat.
Tang Tang smiled and waved to the little guy, “Good morning, little darling~”
Ji Xiaozhuo subconsciously looked up at her, then pouted, hmph, and lowered his head, refusing to look at her.
Tang Tang didn’t mind, just smiled, and went into the kitchen to help get the dishes. Aunt Li was surprised to see her come in; she still wasn’t used to Tang Tang helping in the kitchen, as she had never stepped into the kitchen before.
Suppressing her surprise, Aunt Li poured Ji Xiaozhuo a glass of milk and gave him two steamed buns. Seeing him start eating, she then served herself a bowl of porridge and began to eat, completely ignoring whether Tang Tang ate or not.
Tang Tang had no choice but to get a bowl of porridge and eat with them. However, before she could even take a bite, she felt two pairs of eyes fixed on her. Looking up, she saw the little guy staring at her with a mixture of curiosity and surprise. But when he saw her looking over, he immediately turned his head away, pretending he hadn’t been looking at her.
Tang Tang then looked at Aunt Li, who was also staring at her with surprise. Confused, she asked, “Aunt Li, why are you looking at me like that? Is there something wrong with me?”
Aunt Li frowned, glanced at the porridge in front of Tang Tang, and hesitated before saying, “Madam, you never used to eat breakfast. Why are you eating breakfast today…?” To be precise, she never ate a proper meal; she basically lived on alcohol, which was why she was so thin, like a skeleton. Why was she suddenly eating breakfast this morning?
“Ah…” Tang Tang scratched her head, unsure how to answer, and could only say, “I forgot, but it’s not good to skip breakfast. From now on, I’ll eat with you, okay, baby?”
“Hmph!” The little guy blinked rapidly, but refused to look up at her, only letting out a soft hum to express his dissatisfaction and annoyance.
Tang Tang chuckled; why did this little guy always seem to like humming at her? However, she had already decided to treat him better from now on, so she couldn’t let things continue like this. She had to think of a way to get closer to him.
After thinking for a moment, Tang Tang asked, “Baby, what are you going to do later? I’ll go with you, okay?”
The little guy paused in his chewing, then continued eating as if nothing had happened, as if he hadn’t heard Tang Tang’s words.
Tang Tang knew the little one wasn’t interested in her, so she resorted to the same tricks she used to use to please her nanny. She shamelessly pleaded, “Good baby, sweet baby, little darling, please tell me! I really want to know! I want to be with you!”
This trick always worked wonders on her nanny, and it seemed to be working on the little one too. The little one looked up and glared at her fiercely, then said in a cute, childish voice, “Why are you so annoying? You’re driving me crazy!”
But even when the little one was being fierce, he was incredibly cute, especially his sweet, childish voice, which was absolutely melting. Tang Tang smiled secretly to herself. She continued shamelessly trying to coax him, “Oh, just tell me and I won’t be annoyed anymore. It’s because I like you so much, I just want to be with you.”
The little guy’s eyes widened even more, and he simply put down his spoon, crossed his short, chubby arms to his chest, and said fiercely, “Don’t think you can fool me like that! I won’t believe you, and I’ll never forgive you!”
Tang Tang understood the little guy’s anger. Perhaps the original owner hadn’t treated him well at all, so it was understandable that the little guy wasn’t willing to forgive him. It wasn’t something that could be reconciled with just a few kind words; the key was to move the little guy with sincerity. One day, the little guy would forgive her.
So, Tang Tang looked at the little guy sincerely and earnestly apologized on behalf of the original owner: “I’m sorry, baby. I was wrong before. I’ll change in the future. Observe my behavior, okay? When I behave well, you can forgive me.”
Ji Xiaozhuo never expected Tang Tang to say such a thing. He was almost shocked, looking at Tang Tang in disbelief.
Tang Tang tried her best to meet the little guy’s gaze, knowing in her heart that she was definitely very different from the original owner, but there was no other way. She wanted to win the little guy’s favor and get along well with him, so she could only start changing now. The first step was to apologize sincerely, and then prove it with her actions. Even if Aunt Li and the little guy were suspicious, there was nothing they could do.
After staring at each other for a while, Ji Xiaozhuo couldn’t hold back any longer. His ears turned red, and he silently climbed down from the chair, ran to the sofa, grabbed his little schoolbag, slung it over his shoulder, and ran towards the door. “Grandma Li, I’m going down to school!”
Aunt Li, seeing this, quickly put down her bowl and chopsticks and chased after him. “Don’t rush, don’t rush, the school bus shouldn’t be here yet. I’ll take you down, don’t fall.”
The little guy bent down to put on his shoes, but for some reason, he put them on wrong several times. By the time he finally got them on, Aunt Li had caught up with him and held his little hand tightly. “Grandma Li will take you down. You can’t go down alone.”
“Okay then.” The little guy obediently followed Aunt Li out, but as he closed the door, he glanced at Tang Tang in the living room.
Tang Tang wanted to go with them, but her limp made walking too difficult, and she couldn’t keep up. She had to give up on that idea and limped to the window to look down. A moment later, she saw Aunt Li leading the little guy towards the front door.
There were several children about the same age as the little guy standing outside the door. Tang Tang guessed that these children must be going to a school together, because the little guy had just said he was going to school, which probably meant going to an academy.
Just then, the little guy, who had been keeping his head down, suddenly looked up at Tang Tang, their eyes meeting.
Tang Tang was overjoyed and immediately flashed a big smile, waving her arms and calling out, “Baby~ Baby~”
The little guy was startled and immediately turned his head away, turning his back to Tang Tang.
What an awkward little guy!
After a while, a yellow school bus arrived, and the children boarded one after another before driving away.
Tang Tang watched the school bus disappear into the distance, this time without surprise. She now knew that the metal box was a kind of vehicle similar to a horse-drawn carriage, but she still couldn’t help but marvel at how amazing this world was. Not only were there such fast vehicles, but there were also boxes that could see and talk people, something called a television.
Last night, Aunt Li turned on that thing called a television, and many people appeared inside talking. Tang Tang was almost scared to death, and it took her more than an hour to accept it. Then, as she watched, she found it quite interesting, but later Aunt Li turned it off, and she couldn’t watch anymore.
Seeing that there was nothing else to do, Tang Tang followed Aunt Li’s example and turned on the TV to watch what was on.
The TV was showing the same drama Aunt Li had watched the night before; Tang Tang had watched a bit with her and found it quite entertaining. But more importantly, Tang Tang discovered that watching it allowed her to learn a lot about this world, things she needed. So, she watched intently, extracting useful information about this world.
Aunt Li, seeing Tang Tang sitting obediently watching TV, was surprised but also began to believe Tang Tang’s amnesia story. She had taken care of Xiao Zhuo for two years and knew this woman’s character perfectly well. If she hadn’t lost her memory, she wouldn’t be so well-behaved, and she wouldn’t need to pretend in front of them.
It seemed she really had lost her memory because of the car accident.
However, for now, this amnesia seemed quite good. She wasn’t causing trouble or making a fuss, and even knew how to say nice things to make the child happy. If things could continue like this, Xiao Zhuo would have a mother’s love, and her Master could have an easier time.
However, she needed to find an opportunity to talk to her Master about it.
