Chaos erupted within the base. Zhou Xu, who hadn’t been in charge, was now in a state of disarray, making maintaining order a pipe dream.

The base was leaderless, and no one listened to Zhou Xu in the chaos.

Zhou Xu, his face dark, grabbed the fire-type ability user beside him and roared, “I told you to burn down the bridge over the moat! Didn’t you hear me? What are you standing there for?”

The fire-type ability user, held by Zhou Xu, was on the verge of tears, his legs trembling uncontrollably: “The moat is too far; my ability can’t throw the fire there!”

“Zombies—ah—”

Suddenly, someone saw zombies approaching the base from outside, some fast, some slow, and screamed in terror.

“What do we do? The zombies are coming!”

“We’re doomed! We’re all dead! It’s all Liu Guo’an’s fault! Why did he build the moat? Now we’re tied up here and can’t leave!”

Everyone scrambled into the base, disregarding everyone else.

Those guarding the entrance, seeing this, also decided to retreat and ran after them.

Zhou Xu gritted his teeth: “A bunch of idiots, they’ve all run away! Who’s going to hold the base? Once the base is breached, nobody will survive! Have these people lost their minds?”

However, no matter how much he yelled and cursed, it was useless.

Zhou Xu was a wood-type ability user. Seeing that the zombies were almost at the base gate, he couldn’t care less about anything else. He quickly used his ability to make the trees at the gate grow, causing them to intertwine and block the base gate.

Just as Zhou Xu breathed a sigh of relief, suddenly a fire broke out, and the trees at the gate burst into flames.

Zhou Xu’s face turned deathly pale. Where did this fire come from?

“Run! There are zombies and ability users!” Zhou Xu’s mind went blank. After saying that, he took off running, completely forgetting that he had just been cursing the people in the base for having their brains eaten by zombies. The base was only so big; where could he possibly escape to?

Liu Guo’an stood upstairs, coldly watching the chaotic crowd.

Ordinary people and ability users were no different at this moment. The fear of death only fuelled their desire to escape.

Morale was low; he couldn’t get people to work together. Even with immense skill, there was no way to withstand the encircling horde of zombies.

“If only the squad leader were here,” Liu Guo’an said with a bitter smile.

At that moment, the people who had rushed upstairs in a panic saw Liu Guo’an.

They charged at him, shouting, “Liu Guo’an, it’s all your fault! These zombies must have been brought by Fu Ke! She must have deliberately come to retaliate against us! Why did you let them escape and leave such a threat?”

The man’s eyes were bloodshot; if it weren’t for the fact that his eyes were different from those of a zombie, one would almost think he had turned into one.

“Liu Guo’an, did you conspire with Fu Ke? Otherwise, why did you build that moat? Now we can’t even escape!”

“Liu Guo’an, you beast! You actually used zombies to persecute your own kind!”

They had clearly forgotten that they were the ones who forced Fu Ke to leave. Yet, when Fu Ke appeared before them, not a single person in the entire base dared to lay a hand on her.

From their words, he should have killed Fu Ke back then? Liu Guo’an couldn’t help but sneer, “I don’t have the ability to kill Fu Ke. Since you’re so powerful, why didn’t you kill her back then?”

“You, you’re just making excuses!”

“Kill him! It’s all his fault! If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be trapped here becoming zombie food.”

“Yes! We must kill him!”

Anger had consumed everyone’s reason, and now everyone blamed Liu Guo’an, completely forgetting that if they hadn’t disobeyed Liu Guo’an’s orders, if they had cooperated properly, they might still have a chance to survive.

Meanwhile, Deng Yunfei and his group were in the grove. Deng Yunfei, an earth-type ability user, found the spot they had marked earlier, and with a light stomp of his foot, a pit large enough for one person to enter collapsed.

Earlier, when Liu Guo’an said a large horde of zombies would arrive, Xie Changyi had Deng Yunfei dig a tunnel here.

This tunnel led to a sewer outside the moat. This was Xie Changyi’s worst-case scenario plan, but he hadn’t expected it to actually come in handy.

“Second Brother, aren’t we going to leave the people in the base?” Mao Xinhua, the youngest of the group, felt a pang of pity upon hearing the howling and wailing outside the grove.

Deng Yunfei glanced at him but remained silent.

Xiang Jiuming scoffed, “Leave them? How? These people have gone mad; they’ve lost all basic reason. If we try to help them, none of us will be able to leave.”

Mao Xinhua trembled under the gazes of his second and third brothers.

He looked back; everyone in the base was rushing upstairs, and no one was coming towards the grove. Mao Xinhua gritted his teeth and followed Deng Yunfei and Xiang Jiuming, jumping down into the hole.

After jumping down, the narrow passage was somewhat crowded, but fearing the zombies would find them, Deng Yunfei blocked the entrance, making it so that no one could step on it and it wouldn’t collapse.

However, blocking the only light, the passage became pitch black; even those with supernatural abilities couldn’t see through it.

“The air in the tunnel is limited. We need to get out of here quickly, or we might suffocate, understand?” Because they were afraid Dong might sneak in from the sewers, the other end of the tunnel was also blocked.

This resulted in insufficient air in the tunnel.

Turning on their flashlights, the group crouched down, balancing their breathing, and quickly moved forward.

They had dug the tunnel quite deep, deliberately below the moat to avoid being discovered. However, as they passed the moat, they clearly heard the close-up roars, making them even more cautious.

Fortunately, the moat wasn’t very wide, and they quickly crossed it, reaching the tunnel entrance. Deng Yunfei pushed, and a rush of foul-smelling air instantly filled the tunnel.

They still gasped for breath, as the tunnel was oxygen-deprived, and they were nearing their limit.

They all slumped down at the entrance, not minding the foul air at all.

Qin Long followed Fu Ke out of the small villa, only to find that Fu Ke had locked the door. He asked, puzzled, “Why did you lock the door?”

In the apocalypse, what difference did locking or unlocking make?

Fu Ke glanced at Qin Long indifferently: “This is my home.”

Qin Long froze, a sharp pain shooting through his heart. He looked at Fu Ke with heartache, quickly concealing the pain in his eyes. Home— even in her past life, Xiao Bai, though ignorant, still longed for a home.

This courtyard, cold and empty, felt like her home.

After locking the door, Fu Ke prepared to leave, but Qin Long slowly followed behind her.

Qin Long had memories of what happened in this life, so he knew clearly that Xiao Bai and the skinny man had been reborn. But he didn’t have the courage to be honest with Xiao Bai now.

“My place is overrun with zombies. Are you sure you want to come with me?” Fu Ke took a few steps and then turned back to look at Qin Long.

Qin Long nodded seriously.

Fu Ke was somewhat puzzled. She had sensed Qin Long seemed to feel sorry for her earlier? But what was he feeling sorry for? Fu Ke was confused; she didn’t think she had anything to deserve pity or sympathy.

She felt something was off about Qin Long after he woke up, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

The villa no longer needed zombies guarding it. Anyone entering without Fu Ke’s permission would automatically enter a hallucination and then leave on their own.

Fu Ke knew she would rarely come to the villa, but she had bought it precisely because it was her home.

Having a home made her feel much more at ease. Especially when she was first reborn, she had been quite lost.

Even now, with a general direction, she hadn’t given up on the villa.

When they arrived at the Chaoyang Base with Fu Ke, the words “Chaoyang Base” were carved in large characters by Fu Ke and the skinny man was at the entrance. However, when Qin Long saw “Chaoyang Base,” his eyes stung slightly.

Although it wasn’t the same place, it was still Chaoyang Base.

Lan Zhi, who was guarding the door, greeted Fu Ke with a hoarse sound when she saw him return, but her blood-red eyes held a hint of doubt, because Qin Long was following behind Fu Ke.

Qin Long, who had already met Lan Zhi in this life’s memories, wasn’t surprised to see her here.

However, he narrowed his eyes slightly, looking at Lan Zhi with hostility.

His conscious mind still belonged to his past life, so seeing Lan Zhi inevitably reminded him of how Xiao Bai had died at Lan Zhi’s hands.

Fu Ke sensed the change in Qin Long’s emotions and looked at him sharply.

Qin Long suppressed his hostility towards Lan Zhi, a gentle smile playing on his lips: “What’s wrong?”

Before, he had always called her Fu Ke. But now Fu Ke realized that Qin Long seemed to be intentionally avoiding calling her by her name? And there was the hostility he had shown towards Lan Zhi earlier.

Fu Ke looked at Qin Long, but he remained unmoved.

“Nothing, let’s go in.” If Brother Long had been reborn, he wouldn’t refuse to acknowledge her; it must be her imagination.

Qin Long breathed a slight sigh of relief. Fu Ke, who was walking ahead, paused for a moment before continuing inside, seemingly oblivious to anything.

….

T City, Gu Ming was driving, the accelerator floored, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, his eyes bloodshot as he stared ahead, his body trembling slightly.

Professor Gu, sitting in the passenger seat, was reviewing the documents he had brought, but his brow was furrowed: “The documents are incomplete; some documents are missing.”

“Professor, our mission is to safely bring you back to B City. That zombie has superpowers; we can’t go back.” The superhuman in the back seat understood Professor Gu’s meaning and quickly said.

A few SUVs, with Professor Gu’s car in the middle, sped forward.

Luckily, they had enough fuel; otherwise, they didn’t know if they could outrun the zombie.

Number Eight, who hadn’t caught up with Professor Gu, was now standing in the underground research institute. Many people had come from B City, but nearly half of them had died protecting Professor Gu.

Number Eight removed his sunglasses, his bloodshot eyes glaring menacingly at the research institute. The electricity in his hand twisted and turned, then surged away.

He put his sunglasses back on and turned to leave.

Shortly after he left, a massive explosion erupted from the underground laboratory, causing the ground above to collapse.

Lightning was normally the bane of zombies, but Number Eight had unexpectedly acquired lightning-based abilities. He extended his pale finger, a slight smile playing on his thin lips.

He turned and headed towards T City Hospital.

The hospital had the most zombies, making it the safest place for him; clearly, the surrounding zombies feared him. Number Eight took out the antibody serum from the refrigerator and injected it into his arm.

Although each injection made him stronger, it also caused him immense pain and agitation afterward. Therefore, Number Eight dared not inject it all at once.

But the thought that his inadequacy had allowed Professor Gu to escape made Number Eight’s eyes grow even more sinister and violent.

After the injection, Number Eight’s muscles bulged, his veins swelling as if they were about to explode.

“Roar—” he roared, gripping the syringe tightly, his face contorted in a ferocious expression.

The zombies in the hospital fell instantly silent, trembling under Number Eight’s oppressive aura.

Suddenly, Number Eight turned to look at the zombies outside, a crazed glint in his blood-red eyes.

A few days later, the T City base was surrounded by a horde of zombies.

Humans were taken captive, becoming food supplies for the zombies. Number Eight occupied the T City base, but his gaze remained fixed on the direction Professor Gu had left in, a crazed look in his eyes.
