After this class, Shu Mian had another elective course on film appreciation, also in the same teaching building.
Song Yiyi didn’t choose this class, and waved at her with a wink, “Mian Mian, will someone accompany you to the next class too? I’m going with Fu Xingfan now.”
“…”
Shu Mian glanced subconsciously at Tan Xuzhe next to her. He was still sitting in his seat, casually twirling his phone in his hand, seemingly with no intention of leaving. Could it be… that he was really waiting for her?
She put the book into her bag, hesitated for a moment, and called him softly, “Tan Xuzhe.”
Tan Xuzhe looked up, his gaze falling on her, and raised an eyebrow. “Hmm?”
Shu Mian pursed her pink lips and asked softly, “Do you… have class next period?”
“No,” he answered crisply, his gaze lingering on her face, as if waiting for her to continue.
Shu Mian’s fingertips curled slightly. “Then do you want to take an elective course with me?”
She paused for a moment, then quickly added, “The teacher is very lenient; he only talks for a couple of minutes before letting us watch a movie.”
She had a gut feeling that Tan Xuzhe was a little special towards her… which was why she dared to take the initiative to invite him, but she was a little uneasy after asking.
When you’ve had a crush for a long time, even if you catch a glimpse of the light, you’ll be afraid it’s just a mirage.
Could it be that she’s just imagining things, or that she’s just imagining things as a two-way street between them?
Tan Xuzhe smiled, his voice sounding strangely tender, “Shu Mianmian, are you inviting me to watch a movie together?”
“…”
Shu Mian’s ears burned. They were clearly taking a film appreciation elective together, but his words had somehow made it seem more ambiguous.
“No.” She tried to appear calm and blinked. “If you want to see a movie… I’ll treat you to one at the cinema next time.”
Unexpectedly, Tan Xuzhe actually agreed. He casually took the bag from her hand and said, “Then I’ll accompany you to class this time, and you’ll accompany me to the movies next time, okay?”
“Okay.” Shu Mian replied, suppressing her excitement, her heart filled with a sweet, bubbling feeling.
Yay!
When the two arrived at the classroom for her elective class, they deliberately found seats closer to the center so that they would have a better view when the teacher showed a movie.
Before class started, Shu Mian went to the restroom. When she came back, she found a girl standing next to Tan Xuzhe.
The girl smiled brightly and adorably, holding her phone and leaning slightly forward to look at him. Her voice was clear and crisp, “Hello, I noticed you as soon as I came in. Could I add you on WeChat?”
Shu Mian paused, wondering if she should wait a while before returning to her seat.
She had neither the status nor the right to interrupt them.
Although she knew that Tan Xuzhe’s WeChat ID wasn’t something he would give to just anyone, she still felt a pang of anxiety.
She glanced at him instinctively and saw him leaning lazily against the back of his chair, his usual nonchalant tone carrying a hint of aloofness. “Sorry, I can’t.”
The girl seemed surprised by the straightforward rejection, a hint of disappointment flashing across her face, but she still pressed on, “…Oh, really not? I won’t bother you, please reconsider?”
Shu Mian sometimes envied girls with such straightforward and generous personalities, who could still stand up for themselves even after being rejected.
She, on the other hand, was like a turtle hiding in its shell. Only when she felt safe enough would she cautiously peek out of her shell, and at the slightest disturbance, she would immediately retreat back to her safe zone.
But she was already trying to step out of her shell and explore… She wanted to enter Tan Xuzhe’s heart.
Just then, she suddenly heard a boy’s somewhat lazy voice call out to her, “Shu Mianmian, aren’t you coming over?”
“…”
Shu Mian looked up and saw him raising his eyebrows slightly, a hint of a smile in his bright peach blossom eyes, looking at her. She hesitated for a few seconds, then walked over.
Tan Xuzhe toned down his aloof tone and a smile appeared in the corner of his eye… These sudden changes startled the girl who wanted his WeChat, and she then turned her head curiously to look at Shu Mian.
“I’m just here to accompany her to class,” Tan Xuzhe asked the girl casually. “Why don’t you ask her if I can give you my WeChat?”
Shu Mian: “?”
Her cheeks flushed instantly. Was she being used as a shield?
The girl snapped out of her daze, her gaze sweeping back and forth between the two with a questioning look. She immediately understood what was going on, and gave an awkward smile. “Oh, I see… I apologize for disturbing you earlier.”
After saying that, she turned and left.
“Shu Mianmian”.
Shu Mian had just sat down when Tan Xuzhe called her name softly.
She turned her head to look at her. “What’s wrong?”
“Have you forgotten something?” Tan Xuzhe asked, resting his chin on his hand as he looked at her.
Shu Mian blinked, looking completely bewildered. “What?”
“Sugar,” Tan Xuzhe reminded him.
Shu Mian was taken aback for a moment, then realized what he meant and quickly said, “I brought it with me.”
During their previous WeChat conversation, he mentioned that she should give him candy next time they met. Although she thought he might have just said it casually, she still kept it in her bag.
She didn’t expect him to remember.
Shu Mian took a whole bag of candy out of her bag, tore open the wrapper, and asked him softly, “Which flavor do you like best?”
Tan Xuzhe actually felt that the flavors were all quite similar, and he didn’t have a favorite. So he then asked, “Which flavor do you like?”
“I like orange flavor the most,” Shu Mian said, her eyes brightening slightly. “It’s sweet and sour.”
Her eyes were clear and bright, and she looked beautiful when they shone.
Tan Xuzhe stared at it for a while, a slight smile curving his eyes. “Then I like orange flavor the most too.”
Upon hearing this, Shu Mian secretly curled the corners of her lips and immediately lowered her head to pick out all the orange-flavored candies for him.
Seeing this, Tan Xuzhe’s lips curled into a playful smile. “So nice to me?” He chuckled softly, “Don’t you also like orange flavor the most? Give them all to me!”
Shu Mian paused, her ear tips involuntarily getting a little hot.
She was afraid he might have noticed something. It’s really hard to hide feelings of affection; even if you cover your mouth and eyes, they’ll still slip out through your unintentional little actions.
“Then I’ll keep some for myself.” She picked out a few orange-flavored ones, and then randomly grabbed a few other flavors, and handed them to him.
When Tan Xuzhe reached out to take the candy, his fingers inadvertently touched her fingertips. He paused, the warm and soft touch feeling like an electric current running through his palm.
Shu Mian was startled by the sudden touch, and her fingers subconsciously twitched, but he suddenly grabbed her fingertips, and her heartbeat instantly became disordered.
She subconsciously looked up at him, but his expression was normal, as if he had only accidentally pinched her fingertip while taking the candy.
Under her gaze, Tan Xuzhe raised an eyebrow, slowly released her fingertips, then peeled a candy and threw it into his mouth, his thin lips curving slightly in a roguish way, “Shu Mianmian, so sweet.”
Shu Mian blushed upon hearing this. Was he referring to the candy or to her?
After class started, the teacher came into the classroom, said a few words, and showed them a comedy movie.
The plot was funny and engaging, and she was very engrossed in watching it.
Midway through, her phone screen on the table lit up with a WeChat notification. Shu Mian clicked on it and saw that the message was from Shen Jiayue.
Shen Jiayue: [Baby, what are you doing? Have you eaten? Have you missed me? Anyway, I’ve missed you. Can we talk for a bit?]
Shen Jiayue: [I missed you so much! Looks like you didn’t miss me at all?]
Shu Mian was amused by her message and quickly replied: [I’ll start thinking about you right now. I didn’t check the message earlier; I was watching a movie in my elective class.]
The two chatted for a while and agreed to go shopping together during the National Day holiday.
She had just put down her phone when Tan Xuzhe, who was next to her, suddenly spoke up, “Who are you chatting with? Why are you laughing so happily?”
“My friend,” she replied casually.
Tan Xuzhe raised an eyebrow, his tone seemingly tinged with a probe, “A boy?”
Shu Mian paused for a moment, then shook her head. “A girl.”
Tan Xuzhe responded with an “oh,” a pleased smile curving his lips.
