All three Qin brothers were handsome, with Qin Shen being the most composed. His features were deep and distinct, inheriting his father Qin Gang’s thick eyebrows, large eyes, and tall stature.

Although his drab clothes made him seem less imposing, his looks would rival those of a young heartthrob in his generation. That old, squinty-eyed bachelor couldn’t even be worthy of carrying his shoes.

Therefore, Wu Wanjun definitely must not be marrying that old bachelor willingly; there must be a hidden reason.

Qin Shen had originally planned to silently protect Wu Wanjun, but Yun Zheng’s words were a wake-up call. How could he watch the woman he loved jump into a fire pit?

So, unusually, he hardened his stance and quickly followed Yun Zheng towards the Wu family’s house.

The Wu family lived in Xianan Village, nestled against the mountain. A large crowd of villagers had gathered at the entrance to watch the spectacle.

The moment Yun Zheng and Qin Shen appeared, they became the center of attention.

Everyone knew about Qin Shen’s annulment of his engagement with Wu Wanjun, and everyone thought Qin Shen was probably here to steal the bride!

This was going to be a good show!

In the courtyard, Wu Lanshi was chatting amicably with her daughter, Wu Wanjun, who was wearing a new dress made of polyester, and the old bachelor Dong Qiang.

Seeing Yun Zheng and Qin Shen, she felt a pang of unease and quickly shielded her daughter behind her.

“Qin family, we’re discussing marriage here. If you have something to say, we can talk about it later.”

But Yun Zheng said with a smile. “Aunt Lan, Wanjun is only 17 this year, not yet of marriageable age. It’s not proper for you to marry her off like this.”

But Wu Lanshi said sternly, “This is my family’s business. What does it have to do with you? Your older brother has no relationship with Wanjun anymore. My daughter can marry whomever she wants.”

However, Yun Zheng said earnestly. “Aunt Lan, your thinking is wrong. We’ve been in reform and opening up for several years now. Our leader has said we must break down the Four Olds[1] and advocate democracy and freedom. Moreover, the new marriage law clearly prohibits arranged marriages. If this is reported, you will face criminal charges.”

Wu Lanshi’s face paled, and her tone became sharp.

“What nonsense are you spouting? I’m arranging a marriage for my daughter, how is that illegal? Isn’t this how every girl in the village gets married?”

It was the village’s backwardness that was to blame; the older generation was deeply influenced by the pre-reform era and thus still followed old rules. So Yun Zheng’s words immediately served as a wake-up call for the villagers.

“Sister Wan Jun, let me ask you, are you really willing to marry Dong Qiang? He’s old enough to be your father!”

Yun Zheng approached Wu Wanjun. The girl was pretty and delicate, with a pointed face and large, bright eyes, but her eyes were red, clearly from a good cry the night before.

Wu Wanjun probably hadn’t expected Qin Shen to appear, and had been gazing intently at the man she admired. Yun Zheng’s question made her hesitate.

“Qin Yunzheng, I’m not even 50 years old, how am I old enough to be her father?”

Dong Qiang shouted angrily. He wasn’t even as tall as Yun Zheng, had shifty eyes, and a huge mole on his chin— a truly unsightly sight.

How could such a beautiful girl like Wu Wanjun be ruined by such a greasy old man? It’s simply outrageous!

“Grandpa Dong, you’re only a few years younger than my grandmother. Wanjun is more than old enough to be your granddaughter. How dare you marry her? Have you no shame?!”

“You!”

Dong Qiang was furious at being called “Grandpa Dong”.

“What do you want to do!”

Qin Shen, though tongue-tied, was strong and bold. He stood like a wall in front of Yun Zheng, cracking his knuckles as he clenched his fists at Dong Qiang.

“If you dare touch a single hair on my fifth sister’s head, I’ll crush you to death!”

[1] The Four Olds (simplified Chinese: 四旧; traditional Chinese: 四舊; pinyin: sì jiù) refer to categories used by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution to characterize elements of Chinese culture prior to the Chinese Communist Revolution that they were attempting to destroy. The Four Olds were ‘old ideas’, ‘old culture’, ‘old customs’, and ‘old habits’.[a][2] During the Red August of 1966, shortly after the onset of the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards’ campaign to destroy the Four Olds began amid the massacres being carried out in Beijing.
