Jiang Shining suddenly opened her eyes.

She was sleeping face down. What she saw was the familiar headboard of the bed in the Marshal’s Mansion bedroom, with a boy beside the bed, his forehead resting on the edge of the bed, fast asleep, with tear stains at the corners of his eyes.

Jiang Shining gently reached out her hand, wanting to stroke him.

“Tanliang, don’t sleep here, you’ll catch a cold— ouch!” The sharp pain in her back made her unable to speak.

Chen Tanliang was startled awake by her voice. The young boy stared at her with his dark eyes, and after a few seconds, he pouted and started to cry.

“Mother–“

Chen Tanliang looked so ugly when he cried, he looked like a monkey. Jiang Shining couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

Hearing the noise, several people came in at once.

“Just like that!”

The most eager person was Chen Jiacheng, who immediately knelt down on one knee by the bed and reached out to hold Jiang Shining’s hand.

Jiang Shining was taken aback. Chen Jiacheng was good-looking, with a kind of handsome roguish air. But at this moment, he was unshaven, his eyes were bloodshot, and there were a few white strands in his hair; he looked like he had been up for several days straight.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jiang Shining asked blankly.

How did she end up like this? She was a bit of a looks-obsessed person, and if her husbands weren’t all decent-looking, she’d probably find the task even more agonizing.

Chen Jiacheng misunderstood, thinking that she was still concerned about him at this moment, and the man’s already bloodshot eyes became even redder.

“Yiru, I’m so sorry…” he said hoarsely, tears welling up in his eyes. “What you said was all right. I should have listened to you, and things wouldn’t have come to this… I even hurt you…”

“What’s wrong with me?” Jiang Shining asked curiously.

Chen Jiacheng couldn’t help but speak. The maid beside her cried and said, “Madam, you were given a second chance at life, but… the doctor said… you will be paralyzed from the waist down in your next life.”

F*ck.

At that moment, Jiang Shining could only think of this word.

Was she forced to experience all the bad things in these five reincarnations after transmigrating into the book?

Chen Tanliang was eight years away from reaching adulthood, and she would be paralyzed during that time.

She sighed softly, “It’s good that everyone’s alright. Jiacheng, can you please stop causing trouble in the future?”

“I won’t mess around anymore, I’ll do whatever you say from now on,” Chen Jiacheng said, crying.

The maids found the scene incredibly touching; the commander and his wife truly had a deep affection for each other!

But at this deeply moving moment, a childish voice of anger rang out.

“It’s all your fault!” ten-year-old Chen Tanliang said angrily. “Mom is like this because of you! I will never forgive you in this lifetime!”

Chen Ruozhi, who had just been carried in by the maid, also shouted, “Bad daddy!”

Enraged by his son’s scolding, Chen Jiacheng raised his hand to strike, but Jiang Shining braced herself and shouted, “Chen Jiacheng!”

Chen Jiacheng paused, looking at Chen Tanliang glaring at him like a little lion. He felt angry but couldn’t hit him. Helpless, he could only turn his head away.

“I won’t fight, okay?”

Jiang Shining felt her head buzzing, and then slowly lay down.

“I don’t ask anything of you, Chen Jiacheng,” she said slowly. “Even if you feel indebted to me in the slightest, promise me you won’t hit the children and will treat them well.”

“I understand…” Chen Jiacheng said, looking embarrassed.

After the incident, Jiang Shining began to recuperate.

Since the disability was a fact and she hadn’t actually died, she told herself to take it easy and treat it as an experience of life.

Her back injury gradually healed, and her life returned to normal. This time, she no longer needed to worry about the world’s events or the main characters. It was said that they had gone home to get married, which was for the best.

However, she could only use a wheelchair now, which made things much more inconvenient for her.

Jiang Shining’s reaction remained indifferent, seemingly no different from before, always making people forget the changes that had happened to her.

On this day, Chen Jiacheng’s maidservant rushed over.

“Madam, have you heard?”

“What did you hear?”

“The warlord is going to divorce his second and third concubines.”

“What?” Jiang Shining put down her embroidery and frowned. “What did those two do to offend him?”

The maid looked at Jiang Shining, seemingly wanting to say something but then stopping herself.

“Judging from the commander’s tone, it seems he’s settling down,” she said softly. “I don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but I guess you don’t know, so I’m letting you know in advance. If you think so too, then consider it me being nosy…”

After Jiang Shining thanked the maid, she watched her leave, feeling a bit of a headache.

What is all this?

A few minutes later, Jiang Shining called for someone to come in. However, it took several minutes of effort before a maid from her own courtyard finally entered.

“Why is your reaction so slow?”

“Madam, the Marshal has summoned both of the concubines away. There’s a lot of crying and wailing in the room,” the maid said apologetically. “I just went to see what was going on.”

“Go and fetch Chen Jiacheng for me.”

“Huh? Now?” The maid hesitated.

“Now,” Jiang Shining said firmly.

The maidservant went out.

Five minutes later, the sound of men’s footsteps could be heard outside, and Chen Jiacheng entered.

“You called me?” Chen Jiacheng squatted down beside her. “How are you? Does your back hurt today?”

Jiang Shining slapped away the hand that was groping around her waist.

“Are you going to divorce Sun Qinling and Xu Lingxin?” she asked.

“Yes.” Chen Jiacheng was taken aback. “How do you have such good news when you can’t even leave?”

“You can’t divorce them.” Jiang Shining had a terrible headache.

“Why can’t I? Yiru, I’ve figured it out. I was a jerk before,” Chen Jiacheng said. “We’ve come this far together, and now I’m eyeing other women. It’s really unfair to you…”

“So many years have passed, is it still meaningful to talk about these things now?” Jiang Shining said.

Chen Jiacheng was taken aback.

“You…you don’t mind?”

Jiang Shining let out a soft breath; she felt a pang of sadness for the original owner of this body.

“So what if I mind? It won’t change your mind. After all these years, even if I still minded, it’s all worn away.”

Chen Jiacheng was speechless for a moment. After a long while, he said in a low voice, “…I just wanted to do something to make it up to you.”

“Then don’t divorce them,” Jiang Shining said. “You’re quick to act, but have you thought about how they’ll live if they leave? You’ve taken up the best years of their youth; you can’t abandon them now.”

“Fine, fine, I’ll listen to you,” Chen Jiacheng said, somewhat annoyed.

He stood up, ready to walk out, but stopped at the door and turned to look at Jiang Shining.

“Yiru,” he said softly, “I feel… you don’t love me the same way as before.”

The person who loved him was the timid and clueless Jiang Yiru, not Jiang Shining.

Jiang Shining lowered her eyelashes, concealing the expression in her eyes, and sighed softly.

“If I didn’t love you, would I die for you?”

This answer reassured Commander Chen. He nodded and then walked outside.

After he left, Jiang Shining started to feel sleepy again. It seemed her health wasn’t as good as before. So she asked her maid to help her to bed so she could take a nap.

Jiang Shining slept soundly, and when she opened her eyes again, it was already dusk. The room was dark because there were no lights on.

Jiang Shining blinked slowly and suddenly saw Sun Qinling sitting at the table in her bedroom, watching her.

“Is there anything I can help you with?” Jiang Shining asked.

She wasn’t used to being lying down when people came, so she tried to prop herself up with her hands. But she wasn’t strong enough, and her legs were so heavy that she couldn’t move. Sun Qinling saw this, came over, and helped her move a little so she could lean against something.

Sun Qinling simply sat down on the edge of Jiang Shining’s bed.

“Why did you do that?”

“Do what?”

Sun Qinling gritted her teeth.

“Let Chen Jiacheng not divorce us,” she said. “Don’t you hate us? We, the two newcomers, have taken over the house, your husband, and all the property that rightfully belonged to you… Don’t you hate us?”

Jiang Shining looked at her quietly, “I don’t hate you, what about you?”

Sun Qinling was taken aback.

“You haven’t answered my question yet,” she said. “Why did you do that?”

“Where can you go after you leave?” Jiang Shining said calmly.

“You’re actually being so kind?”

“When have I ever harmed you?” Jiang Shining retorted.

Sun Qinling felt speechless for a moment.

“But back then… I even tried to steal your daughter, and you don’t hold a grudge?”

Jiang Shining sighed softly.

“Sun Qinling, do you know who the most pitiful people in this world are?” she said. “They are the poor and women. There are far too many women in this era who can only rely on men to survive. If men kill them, they have no way to live.”

Sun Qinling thought she was being sarcastic, so she retorted, “Aren’t you just like us?”

“So, we are all pathetic,” Jiang Shining said calmly. “Since living is already so difficult, it is only right that we take care of each other.”

“You—” Sun Qinling stared at her in astonishment, “Are you really that carefree?”

Jiang Shining sighed softly.

“I just hope that we can get along well in the future, okay?” she said. “If you like Chen Ruozhi, you can visit her more often and take her out to play, but… don’t do what you did back then. She’s grown up now and she’ll hold a grudge.”

Sun Qinling stared at her with a complicated expression.

The woman breathed softly in the dimly lit room, her voice trembling slightly at the end.

She suddenly stood up. Jiang Shining thought she was leaving, but unexpectedly, Sun Qinling took two steps back and knelt down in front of her.

“What— what do you mean by this?” Jiang Shining asked in astonishment.

Sun Qinling knelt down, but her expression remained as arrogant and unapproachable as ever.

“Jiang Yiru, I’ve wronged you all those years!” she said awkwardly. “I owe you even more for what happened today. If that bast**d Chen Jiacheng had divorced me, I really won’t be able to survive on my own outside.”

“I understand, get up now,” Jiang Shining said, both amused and exasperated.

“I haven’t finished! I… I’m only capable of this much in my life. Even if I cause a huge disaster, I can only ever be someone’s concubine,” Sun Qinling said earnestly. “If there’s a next life— I’ll definitely repay you in my next life. Except for the truly outrageous fact that I can’t be your slave, I really will repay you!”

Jiang Shining sighed helplessly.

“If there’s a next life, let’s all live well and not be like parasites.”

“Okay!” Sun Qinling said, “I admire you for being so passionate and decisive. I’ll go get the wine and toast you.”

“Do you want to become sworn brothers with me again?” Jiang Shining said helplessly.

Sun Qinling laughed.
