Shen Jiayue looked at her with exasperation, “Go ahead, tell him frankly that you like him. After the college entrance exam, everyone will be scattered in different places, and you might not even have a chance to meet again.”

As the seniors took their graduation photos, Shu Mian stood at the edge of the crowd, looking towards Class 1’s location, where Tan Xuzhe was surrounded by a group of people chatting and laughing.

She shook her head. “Never mind, I’d rather not…”

Shen Jiayue sighed, “Look at you, of all things, why did you have to have a crush on someone…”

Suddenly, the boy in the white shirt in the crowd walked towards her, his peach blossom eyes smiling with a captivating curve, “Hidden to the side, peeking at me, Shu Mian?”

“I’m sorry, I…”

Tan Xuzhe raised an eyebrow, leaned closer, his handsome face very close to hers, his eyes brimming with laughter, “You can look openly and honestly.”

Shu Mian stood stiffly while the boy suddenly gathered the stray hairs from her cheek and kissed her face with his warm lips.

“Mian Mian, Mian Mian.”

Someone called her name, and Shu Mian opened her eyes with difficulty, meeting the face of Shen Jiayue, whom she had just been dreaming of.

She scratched her head, looking bewildered, and mumbled in her soft, slightly hoarse voice, “I think I woke up in the wrong way. I’ll go back to sleep.”

“…”

“What a silly little thing.” Shen Jiayue pinched her cheek.

Shu Mian woke up, her eyes filled with surprise and joy. “Yue Yue, what brings you here?”

The two went to different schools; Shen Jiayue attended a foreign language university.

Shen Jiayue reached out and ruffled the tuft of hair on her head that was sticking up from sleeping. “I had some business to attend to in this area, and I thought I’d drop by to see you.”

Shu Mian yawned sleepily, “I just dreamt about you. When I opened my eyes and saw you, I thought I was still dreaming.”

“Your friend has been here for a while now. You were sleeping so soundly, Mian Mian. The alarm clock has rung twice but you haven’t woken up.”

Song Yiyi ate a xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) and said, “Your friend is so nice, hehe, she even brought breakfast for everyone.”

“Yes, thanks to you, we were able to have such a delicious breakfast.”

Shu Mian was stunned; she was sleeping so soundly.

Maybe I had a wonderful dream… so subconsciously I didn’t want to wake up.

She quickly got out of bed and introduced Shen Jiayue and her roommates to each other.

Shen Jiayue’s appearance was completely different from hers. She had a somewhat heroic and mature face, a princess-cut hairstyle, and looked very unapproachable.

But she was actually very approachable and was a typical E person[1].

So Shu Mian wasn’t worried at all about her feeling uncomfortable being with her roommates, and went to the bathroom to wash up.

While brushing her teeth, she thought about the dream she had had.

Was she so lucky yesterday that she became bolder even in her dreams?

She actually dared to dream that Tan Xuzhe kissed her.

After washing up, Shu Mian came out to eat the breakfast that Shen Jiayue had brought.

Her roommates all had things to do today, classes officially started tomorrow, so Fang Yao needed to go home today to get some things.

Xiang Sang had a part-time job, and Song Yiyi was putting on makeup while saying that she had made an appointment with her crush.

After they all left, Shen Jiayue said, “Baby, let me see Cheng Ji’s Weibo.”

“Hey.” Shu Mian handed over her phone while eating, and said indistinctly, “Your ex-boyfriend is now one of the top most visited accounts on my Weibo.”

The two of them had been broken up for much longer than they had been dating.

Unfortunately, Shen Jiayue still kept tabs on her ex-boyfriend’s life. Cheng Ji sometimes streamed himself playing games, had some followers on Weibo, and frequently posted updates.

She refused to use her own account, saying that Cheng Ji had a membership and could see visitors.

The beginning of their relationship was quite interesting.

Shen Jiayue stood in the corridor reciting the Song of the Pipa[2], but got stuck on the line “still holding the pipa, half-concealing her face”.

Just then, Cheng Ji happened to pass by and casually remarked, “Wearing two pipa to cover your whole face?”

The two got to know each other, added each other on WeChat, and soon started dating.

However, after dating for more than three months, Shen Jiayue’s grades dropped, and she felt that the two of them were not compatible.

The trigger was that she accompanied her mother to see a feng shui master, who immediately saw through her relationship and said, “Young lady, this relationship of yours is not your true love. He will harm your studies and will also be detrimental to your future wealth.”

Shu Mian was present when the two broke up.

Shen Jiayue was decisive, and Cheng Ji even declared that if they broke up, then they would break up and whoever came back would be a dog.

As Shen Jiayue looked at it, she complained, “Heh, with that flashy hair, I don’t know who he’s trying to attract attention from. What a show-off.”

“He must have had a blast playing games with girls, that peacock.”

“…”

Shu Mian glanced at her, “You haven’t let go, why don’t you try to get back together with him?”

“He’s bad for my studies and my finances too. How can I tolerate this?”

Shen Jiayue returned the phone to her, saying, “He also said when we broke up that whoever comes back is a dog.”

“…”

“Stop talking about me, let’s talk about you. You’re still having a crush on someone in college? Aren’t you going to take the initiative and pursue Tan Xuzhe?”

Shu Mian took a tissue to wipe her mouth and sighed, “So many people have confessed their feelings to him and been rejected.”

Being rejected by someone you really like would be incredibly painful.

“Do you think he still has feelings for Lin Xuan?”

In the senior year of high school, a girl named Lin Xuan came to the art class. She often went to Class 1 to find Tan Xuzhe. Some people even said they saw them get out of the same car… Rumors spread that the two of them were having an ambiguous relationship and would get together sooner or later.

Shu Mian recalled that yesterday, when her roommates were talking about what type of woman Xuzhe liked, they said that only a glamorous and charming woman could win him over, and Lin Xuan was that type.

However, she entered the entertainment industry after her art exams and was now attending film school.

If that was not the case, I wonder if Tan Xuzhe would already be with her?

Shen Jiayue patted her head and said, “If someone as popular as him really had something going on with Lin Xuan back then, would no one on the No. 4 Middle School forum have posted photos of them together? You guys who are just making a mountain out of a molehill are just being paranoid about things that are based on rumors.”

“Maybe,” Shu Mian said, her eyes lowered.

Shen Jiayue had other things to do in the afternoon, so after having lunch together, she went back to her school.

Shu Mian was the only one in the dormitory. She sat at the table and drew a small comic on her tablet. It was a picture of the dog Wang Wang that she had walked yesterday, which she wanted to include in a video.

As evening fell, her roommates returned one after another.

Song Yiyi was the last to return to the dorm. “Babies, next Sunday is my crush’s birthday, and I’d like to invite people from both dorms to dinner. Are you all free?”

[1] A Type E personality most commonly describes an individual—traditionally used in occupational stress studies regarding women—who tries to be “everything to everyone”, balancing a high-achieving career with intense domestic and nurturing duties. Alternatively, newer psychological frameworks define it as an extroverted, high-energy risk-taker or someone driven by empathy and emotional depth

[2] The Chinese pipa ballad, famously known as “Pipa Xing” (琵琶行) or the “Song of the Pipa / Ballad of the Lute,” is a legendary 816 AD narrative poem by Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi. It describes a chance night encounter with a heartbroken, master female musician by the Yangtze River.
