After Xiao Zheng put down his sniper rifle and confirmed that the figure that had suddenly appeared was his own Xiao Si, he hesitated whether to continue attacking Shen Chengfeng.

This was a golden opportunity. All their snipers were lying in ambush here, in near-perfect camouflage. If they were given just one more minute, even if Shen Chengfeng had extraordinary abilities, he would surely perish in their hands.

But at this crucial moment, his own little sister jumped out.

What to do?

As the team leader, he couldn’t possibly let them leave unchecked.

But what if the bullet was unlucky and hurt his own little sister?

“Captain, should we continue the siege?” someone asked over the communicator.

Xiao Zheng gritted his teeth and made a retreat gesture.

Chen Yishan frowned slightly but did not ask why. Everyone evacuated.

Shen Chengfeng noticed that the gunfire had stopped and lifted the guy who was lying on top of him up.

Xiao Jing was still a little dazed. She awkwardly scratched the back of her head and changed the subject, saying, “It seems they’ve retreated.”

“It must be Xiao Zheng discovering you.” Shen Chengfeng picked up his gun to check his current location.

Xiao Jing followed closely behind him and asked, puzzled, “Captain, you could have easily escaped their encirclement just now, so why did you choose to fight them head-on?”

“A strategy to defend against the enemy,” Shen Chengfeng replied succinctly.

“Aren’t you worried that they might actually shoot you?”

“I wanted to test their sniper skills.” Shen Chengfeng looked at the magazine on the ground; it seemed Xiao Zheng had gone all out.

Xiao Jing squatted down beside him. “So you were using yourself as bait?”

“Including Xiao Zheng, all four snipers are highly skilled. If it was an ordinary soldier, he would probably get his head blown with a single shot. Be careful.”

“So their sudden withdrawal was because they discovered your intentions?”

Shen Chengfeng glanced back at her, his fingertips rubbing the gun in his hand, but he didn’t answer the question.

Xiao Jing’s gaze darkened. From the disdain in her captain’s eyes, it was clear that he wanted her to always bring her brain with her when she went out.

Shen Chengfeng turned and walked into the depths of the jungle, taking out his short knife and cutting through the thorns and brambles. He said, “Didn’t Lin Qi go after you?”

Xiao Jing said with a wry smile, “Captain, didn’t you tell me to keep my distance from him?”

“It’s good that you know your limits.” Shen Chengfeng suddenly stopped and raised his hand to signal the soldiers behind him to be quiet.

Xiao Jing raised her gun warily, staring intently at the movements ahead.

Footsteps could be heard, slowing their pace.

“Xiao Zheng has always been confident that his team has all-around talent, and today is the day to wake him up.” Shen Chengfeng pointed to the big tree in front of him.

With a gun on her back, Xiao Jing climbed the tree using both her hands and feet, looking down at the two people who were walking silently past in front of her, and cautiously moved forward along the branches.

The two-person team didn’t notice anything amiss and continued walking quietly through the forest, which was filled with a chilling atmosphere.

Xiao Jing adjusted the scope and calmly waited for her chance to shoot.

The excess sunlight was blocked by the leaves, making the whole forest look desolate.

“Bang.” The bullet, like a sleeping dragon awakening, soared into the sky, instantly engulfing one of the people with scalding flames.

“Someone’s there.” The other person realized what was happening and quickly shielded his injured companion behind him.

The man was wounded in the right foot; a bullet had pierced through it, and bright red blood soaked the green ground beneath his feet.

Xiao Jing continued to aim at the two men. There were two ways to declare someone dead in this kind of combat training: one was to lose combat capability and withdraw on their own, and the other was to break the sensors on their bodies. The sensors were located inside the chest area of the bulletproof vest. Only by hitting the left atrium could the person be declared dead and withdrawn.

The two became wary, standing back to back, glancing around at the surroundings.

Xiao Jing seized the opportunity and fired again.

The bullet pierced through the dappled sunlight, as if coated with a layer of afterglow, and struck one of the men squarely in the left atrium. Instantly, white smoke billowed up.

“Hidden person spotted.” Without any hesitation, the other man fired a series of shots.

Knowing she had been exposed, Xiao Jing tilted her body and hung upside down on the tree trunk, avoiding the enemy’s bullet attack. Then she grabbed a vine, thinking of jumping down.

“Snap!” The vine broke in the middle.

Xiao Jing, feeling both amused and exasperated, tried to grab another branch, but unfortunately, her body didn’t give her a second chance, and she fell from the tree trunk, which was more than ten meters high.

Haha, if she fell from that height, she’d be declared dead too.

“Thump!” Xiao Jing thought she was about to have a close encounter with the ground, but after she fell, she realized that someone had stopped her from kissing the ground.

A pair of hands held her waist tightly, and a familiar scent wafted over her. Looking at him, she seemed to see shimmering golden light. Under such close eye contact, her heart felt like a little deer was jumping around joyfully.

Shen Chengfeng caught her falling body, noticed the Zheng Hu team that had caught up, and without thinking, threw her aside.

“Thump.” Xiao Jing fell to the ground. Unsurprisingly, this time she not only made contact with the earth, but also got her face covered in mud and drool.

The golden light shattered, and the little deer accidentally crashed and died.

Shen Chengfeng held the guns with both hands, did not dodge, and fired several shots in a row to preemptively strike the opponent, causing a brief pause in his movements. Then he aimed and pulled his index finger.

The Zhenghu team member’s expression hardened, and his body instinctively retreated. The bullet flew almost towards his face. He turned and lay prone, and the bullet was deeply embedded in the tree trunk, still steaming.

The man stood up in a panic, and as soon as he turned around, a gun was pressed against his forehead.

If this were a battlefield, he would probably be dead by now.

Shen Chengfeng gave him no chance to resist. He pointed the gun downwards, and with a bang, the bullet landed close to his heart, followed by a wisp of white smoke.

Xiao Jing sat up and wiped the dirt off her face.

Shen Chengfeng parted the grass and walked straight toward her, tossing down a handkerchief before proudly leaving.

Xiao Jing blinked, grabbed her handkerchief, and got up to catch up. She felt that her skin had become even thicker recently thanks to the captain’s training.

“Captain, what should we do now?”

Shen Chengfeng glanced sideways at the girl whose face was covered in mud, stopped, took the handkerchief she was clutching and, as usual, wiped her face.

Xiao Jing stared blankly at the face so close to hers. Sunlight once again fell between his eyebrows and eyes, warm and dazzling.

Shen Chengfeng gently wiped the dirt off her face, noticing his own reflection gradually enlarging in her pupils. For some reason, he felt a little dazed, as if he wanted to get closer to her, closer and closer.

Xiao Jing blinked, looking at his head leaning towards her, and subconsciously took a step back. Suddenly, a hand was placed on her waist, forcibly leaving her with nowhere to retreat.

Shen Chengfeng snapped out of his daze, raised his hand and grabbed a red spider that had fallen on her head. The red spider’s hairy claws were just centimeters away from touching her head.

Xiao Jing seemed to wake from a dream, and moved away warily, stammering, “Captain, what were you trying to say?”

Shen Chengfeng glanced at the spider he had crushed to death, then continued walking along the secluded path, carrying his gun.

Xiao Jing followed closely behind. She felt the atmosphere was a bit oppressive and wondered if she should say something to ease the suffocating tension.

“Speak your mind,” Shen Chengfeng said, breaking the silence.

Xiao Jing didn’t notice his sudden stop and bumped headfirst into his back, hitting his gun barrel with a loud thud.

Shen Chengfeng said again, “Concentrate.”

“Yes, Captain.” Xiao Jing grinned, revealing her signature row of big white teeth.

Shen Chengfeng raised his hand and wiped the spider webs from her forehead, whispering, “Don’t forget the poisonous oath you made.”

Xiao Jing frowned. What kind of poisonous oath had she made?

Shen Chengfeng bluntly stated, “If anyone dares to covet the superior’s body, may they be struck by lightning.”

“…”

Shen Chengfeng turned around, proudly raising his head as he walked through the bushes.

Xiao Jing’s lips twitched involuntarily, and she thought to herself: “Sir, do you have a throne for me to inherit? Why would I need to covet you?”

Haha, wishful thinking!

“Keep up with me,” Shen Chengfeng called out softly.

Xiao Jing followed behind him. Sunlight dappled the forest like stars, and birds fluttered their wings merrily. The forest returned to silence once more.

“Bang!” The sudden gunshot shattered the tranquility of the entire forest like a midnight terror.

Birds flew about in all directions, and withered leaves filled the sky, covering the entire ground in no time.

Xiao Jing lay prone among the fallen leaves, cautiously watching the source of the gunshot.

“Bang bang bang.” The two sides were engaged in fierce fighting, and the gunfire became more and more intense, attracting almost all the troops waiting in the surrounding area.

Xiao Jing asked softly, “Captain, should we go out to provide support?”

Shen Chengfeng shook his head. “The time is not right yet.”

Xiao Jing’s heart was in her throat. They were quite far apart, so she couldn’t tell whether the enemy had the numerical advantage or her side had overwhelming numbers. But judging from the gunfire, she was afraid that both sides had suffered heavy casualties.

“This live-fire military exercise not only improved the combat capabilities of both sides, but more importantly, it tested their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Chen Yishan is adept at using deception to create such a large-scale spectacle. I’m afraid that all the members of the Zhenghu team are already lying in ambush all around, just waiting for our Tieying team to come forward and provide support.”

“With such a big commotion, all of our team members will definitely come here.”

“There is a big difference between those inside and outside the circle.”

Xiao Jing suddenly realized that if they rushed in rashly, they would inevitably become easy prey for the other side.

“Let’s hold back for now. Perhaps this is just a delaying tactic by Chen Yishan, and he doesn’t actually have an ambush here,” Shen Chengfeng continued.

Xiao Jing frowned. “Wouldn’t if we just stand guard like this, wouldn’t that be playing right into their hands, allowing them to slaughter our comrades at will?”

“No rush, let’s take another look.” Shen Chengfeng adjusted the sights, keeping his eyes fixed on the movements ahead.

The gunfire was intense, and the ground began to tremble, probably because some large creature had been alerted.

Xiao Jing looked at her captain with an innocent expression, subconsciously telling him that she had a very bad feeling.

Legend had it that the Serinan Peninsula was the most favored by nature, boasting not only a variety of rare plants but also countless wild animals that roamed the entire island.

Haha, it seems like there’s a big shot behind them who wants to have a long chat with them about life ideals.

Because a herd of rhinos swept in like madmen, losing all composure. Above, vultures pierced through the thick forest, emitting mournful cries, as if they had caught a whiff of blood.

One by one, all the people lying in ambush around them ran out from behind their cover with panicked expressions, and the two sides that had been fiercely fighting each other scattered instantly.

Shen Chengfeng grabbed Xiao Jing beside him and dragged her up to the treetop.

The herd of rhinos charged in furiously, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

Xiao Jing swallowed hard. In the blink of an eye, the once lush forest seemed to have been trampled over, leaving only hoofprints on the ground.

Shen Chengfeng forcefully pressed her protruding head back and covered her mouth.

Xiao Jing didn’t understand his intention, so she turned around and stared at him.

Shen Chengfeng covered her mouth, signaling her to be quiet, and pointed to a furtive figure passing by under the tree.

Xiao Jing observed cautiously. The other person’s epaulettes featured a fierce tiger, clearly indicating he was a member of the Zheng Hu team.

Shen Chengfeng moved her back a bit, aimed at the sniper rifle, and fired a shot without hesitation.

The bullet pierced through the gaps in the leaves, like a venomous snake emerging from its burrow in the dead of night, its forked tongue snapping into the enemy’s most vulnerable spot.

“Bang!” The bullet landed on the other person’s arm.

The well-trained special forces member reacted quickly and turned around. Even with an injured arm, he had to remain fully alert. He quickly picked up his rifle, ready to return fire, when another bullet came flying at him, hitting him squarely in the chest.

Smoke filled the air as he announced his death in action.

Xiao Jing put down her sidearm and looked at her captain with a look of seeking reward.

Shen Chengfeng calmly put down his sniper rifle and jumped down from the tree.

Xiao Jing pouted and jumped down with him. As her feet touched the ground, a hand covered her head.

Shen Chengfeng gently patted her head, his face still stern and unsmiling, and said in a serious tone, “You did a very good job.”

Xiao Jing felt uneasy under his glare, thinking that he might suddenly punch her at any moment.

“Knock knock knock.” A series of tinkling sounds came from the bushes.

Shen Chengfeng glanced to the side, and thick smoke spread out in all directions. He said alertly, “Tear gas.”

The two ran off in opposite directions almost simultaneously. A bullet was aimed at Xiao Jing’s slender body. Without a moment’s hesitation, the sniper pulled the trigger.

Shen Chengfeng instinctively pressed down on her body, and the two of them fell to the ground at the same time.

The visual effects of the tear gas made them all unable to discern their direction.

Xiao Jing covered her mouth and nose, coughing incessantly. Before she could react, a pair of hands pulled her away again.

Shen Chengfeng flung Xiao Jing two meters away, and a crater was clearly visible where she had just been lying.

Xiao Jing covered her mouth with one hand, and the moment she raised her hand, she smelled a faint smell of blood. She frowned, realizing that she had no injuries on her body.

Her pupils narrowed as she looked at Shen Chengfeng’s position, where the color on his right shoulder was noticeably darker than the rest of his body.

“Captain.” She tightened her grip on her sidearm, knowing that the captain had thrown her to a safe location and deliberately exposed himself to draw away the enemy’s continued fire.

Shen Chengfeng rolled over and got up. The thick smoke not only made it difficult for him to see but also blurred the opponent’s vision for a short period of time. He used the natural geographical conditions to hide left and right, ensuring that the opponent could not pinpoint his exact location.

“Bang.” The bullet struck the tree trunk, leaving a sizable bullet hole.

Shen Chengfeng covered his mouth and nose. The effect of the tear gas was indeed not to be underestimated. His eyes not only hurt but also burned so badly that he couldn’t open them.

“Bang.” A bullet pierced the air, its surface shimmering like a fireball under the sunlight, adding to its beauty, before finally landing among the withered leaves.

A muffled groan was barely audible, and Shen Chengfeng swiftly fired another shot.

The opponent had just exposed himself, but unexpectedly, after only rolling around once, he was hit in a vital spot and declared dead.

“Cough, cough, cough.” Xiao Jing crawled out of the bushes, waved the thick smoke in front of her, and ran to her captain.

Shen Chengfeng leaned against the tree, catching his breath. His voice was a little hoarse. “You did a good job.”

Xiao Jing squatted down and took out the medicine.

Shen Chengfeng pressed down on her hand, ignoring the ointment in her hand, and instead picked up the kettle, poured some into the lid, and gently called out, “Come here.”

Xiao Jing instinctively stretched her head toward him, her eyes red and burning, and she couldn’t help but start to shed tears.

Shen Chengfeng carefully picked up the kettle lid and used it to wash her eyes. “Do your eyes hurt?”

Xiao Jing nodded. “It’s a little spicy.”

Shen Chengfeng lifted her head, brought it close, and blew on it. “We’ll find a place with a water source later.”

His breath hit her face, and Xiao Jing blushed involuntarily. She could feel the little deer in her heart, which had been killed in the crash, suddenly come alive again, pounding against her heart with a violent, unrestrained thud.

Shen Chengfeng ran his fingertips over the bloodstains on her face, wiping them away imperceptibly. He asked, “Does it still hurt?”

Xiao Jing was stunned for a moment, staring intently at his reddened eyes. For some reason, her cheeks felt even hotter.
