Su Xi had had this problem since she was a child. She had a slightly cold constitution, and when her menstrual cramps started, the pain was unbearable. She felt like she wanted to roll around in bed.

She frowned in discomfort, struggled to sit up, and pulled open the bedside table, only to find that the painkillers inside were long gone.

She had no choice but to lie back down weakly, curling up into a ball.

She lay there for a while, her hands and feet icy cold, her forehead covered in cold sweat, in a state between sleep and wakefulness.

She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but suddenly she felt something warm under her feet, like a hand warmer.

A moment of confusion crossed Su Xi’s somewhat frozen mind… Hadn’t the hand warmer she refilled last night long gone cold? How come it suddenly got hot again?

….

Lu Huan, who was outside the curtain, was also dealing with a woman’s menstrual cramps for the first time, and he was inevitably a little flustered.

He had learned from pharmacology books how to make pain-relieving soup using ingredients like Corydalis and Trogopterus xanthipes, but that was a method from his era and couldn’t be applied to her.

She should have more effective medicine, but Lu Huan’s current unlocked area was only her house and the surrounding area. There wasn’t a single pharmacy within half a mile, and even if he did find one, Lu Huan wouldn’t be able to buy it with silver.

Lu Huan paced back and forth in the tent, his brow furrowed.

Thinking that cold-type dysmenorrhea symptoms should require the replenishment of heat sources, Lu Huan carefully lifted the quilt at her feet through the curtain, moved the round object to the hall, found a long black wire, and connected it to something called a “socket” in the corner of the hall.

Once the glowing red bubble on the round object dimmed, it should be warm.

Then, Lu Huan quietly took it back and, while Su Xi’s eyes were closed, stuffed the round object into the blanket at her feet.

For the past few nights, Lu Huan had seen Su Xi do this before going to bed. Although he didn’t know what the round object was, he could roughly guess that it was something like a piece of charcoal that could be held in one’s arms for warmth.

He had a good memory and could remember everything he saw, so he learnt very quickly and was already proficient in using it.

After he put the object inside, Su Xi’s pained expression on the bed finally eased, and she tossed and turned less often, which made him breathe a sigh of relief.

….

Lu Huan switched the screen to the kitchen and found a packet of brown sugar in the cabinet.

In the dynasty a thousand years later, everything was incredibly new and exciting to Lu Huan.

He didn’t like the rectangular black screen hanging on the wall of the main hall, because once her mother turned it on, a bunch of people would make a lot of noise inside, either dancing some strange dances or singing some very jarring songs.

However, when Su Xi opened the curtain, there were often other unfamiliar cartoon characters inside, acting out love and hate dramas. Su Xi would watch with potato chips and laugh out loud. Lu Huan, who was outside the curtain, would occasionally look up while handling some military affairs in the tent.

He interpreted it as a live-action shadow puppet show.

It was quite pretty, though.

He had already watched several episodes with Su Xi and was trying to understand the relationships between the characters, as well as learn some new vocabulary from the dynasty a thousand years later through the live shadow puppet show.

But Lu Huan’s favorite place was the kitchen. He discovered that there were many things in the kitchen that were beyond his comprehension. The tall box standing next to the wall could actually store fresh vegetables, and when it was opened, a cold air would waft out.

He was trying to find the ginger inside.

But we discovered that the last piece of ginger had been used up by Aunt Su last night.

Lu Huan frowned slightly. If there was only brown sugar and no ginger, the soup would probably not be very effective.

However, Lu Huan recently figured out that there was a button called “game mall” on the screen. After opening it, he could use silver to buy some basic items.

So he skillfully opened it, found the piece of ginger inside, and let some of the loose silver in his pocket disappear into thin air. After that, a piece of yellow ginger appeared on the kitchen cutting board on the curtain.

He then moved swiftly across the screen, rapidly manipulating the cleaver to chop the ginger, boiled the water, then found a clean glass container, tossed both in, and poured boiling water over them. Finally, mimicking the technique he’d learned from watching her mother cook the other day, he pulled out a chopstick and stirred the brown sugar ginger tea.

….

Su Xi slept for a while longer, then heard some slight noises. She groggily opened her eyes and found a steaming cup of brown sugar ginger tea on the bedside table next to her head!

She was startled, wondering if she was dreaming. Weren’t her parents gone? Or was her memory playing tricks on her?

She asked weakly, “Dad, are you back? Or is it Mom?”

No one answered.

Since Su Xi had menstrual cramps, her mind was foggy and she didn’t think much. She just forced herself to sit up and sipped the brown sugar ginger tea.

After drinking it, she immediately felt a warm sensation from her stomach to her lower abdomen, which made her feel a bit better.

She breathed a sigh of relief, pulled the blanket over her head, and went back to sleep. She could only take the morning off today.

In her half-dreaming, half-awake state, it seemed as if someone touched her forehead with a very gentle touch, causing Su Xi to rub her face against the pillow.

….

It was already late at night for Lu Huan, but the candles in his tent were still burning.

He looked up at the sleeping girl’s face on the curtain, feeling incredibly content. He was already very lucky to be able to accompany her in this way.

Lu Huan already knew that he could increase his points by completing the main and side quests on the curtain. In addition, he could also slowly increase his points by diligently performing military duties. Although he didn’t know why the curtain was forcing him to be diligent in this way, he worked several times harder than before in order to see Su Xi as soon as possible. He also compressed his sleep time to the limit each night.

Except for a little time at night, he was never idle. He was always busy reviewing official documents for General Zhenyuan, resolving issues related to provisions on the march, listening to reports from the front in his tent, or discussing matters with other officers in the army. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his work.

The others on the army’s journey, unaware of Lu Huan’s purpose, saw him working so diligently for half a month straight, a level of dedication that was beyond the reach of ordinary people and impossible to fake. They thus gradually developed a greater admiration for him, believing that despite his young age, he possessed a pure heart and a strong desire to serve his country, making him a truly worthy friend.

Seeing that Lu Huan had unknowingly become one with the soldiers and officers in the camp, as well as his own subordinates, General Zhenyuan stroked his beard and smiled from afar.

He was naturally happy to see this happen.
