The scene became somewhat awkward for a moment.
Of course, she was probably the only one who felt awkward. You Xu quickly composed herself and walked over familiarly, taking You Qi’s hand. “Why did you suddenly come over today? You didn’t even tell me beforehand, so I could prepare things for you.”
“No need for that,” You Qi glanced behind her and said meaningfully, “It’s my first time having a brother-in-law, so I came to take a look and give my cousin some feedback.”
You Xu thought about how she and Duan Min emerged from the same room, both wearing matching cow-print pajama sets. In You Qi’s eyes, their relationship must be practically confirmed.
“Come in and sit down.” You Xu invited her in and noticed she was pulling a suitcase.
You Xu: Well, so you’re just here to stay.
You Xu took her suitcase and pulled it towards her room.
You Qi and Duan Min sat facing each other in the living room. She secretly sized up the man in front of her. His features were deep and refined, with smooth and handsome lines, pale skin, and slightly pursed crimson lips.
He looked a little tired, his eyelids drooping, leaning lazily against the sofa, with dark circles under his eyes, as if he hadn’t slept well.
Duan Min hadn’t slept well, not because he wasn’t used to the new environment, but because he was too excited. The thought of eating, living, and sleeping with You Xu from now on, and that she didn’t mind, was enough to keep him happy.
He just hadn’t expected that someone else would come to disturb them on the second day of living together— You Xu’s cousin. Her face was blurry and he couldn’t see it clearly, and he was too lazy to look closely.
“Brother-in-law,” You Qi asked him with a smile, “when did you and my cousin meet?”
Duan Min didn’t lift his eyelids: “Four months ago.”
You Qi continued to ask, “How did you two meet?” Her cousin had never had a boyfriend before, and she thought her cousin wasn’t interested in dating. But seeing her today, she realized her cousin had such high standards, and now she was even more curious about how they had gotten to know each other and gotten together.
Duan Min casually said, “We met when the door opened.”
“…Huh?” You Qi was stunned for a moment before realizing that this might be a clichéd love story, so she continued to press, “Did you pursue my cousin, or did she pursue you? Who confessed first?”
“…” When You Xu heard this, she almost spat out blood. She quickly tried to divert Duan Min’s attention, “Duan Min, come to the kitchen and make breakfast with me?”
Duan Min nodded slightly, then he got up and went to the kitchen. You Xu handed You Qi a cup of hot water and said quickly in a low voice, “I pursued him, I confessed, I did everything. He’s introverted and quiet, so he’s too embarrassed to answer if you ask him like that. If you want to know anything, just ask me.”
“Okay,” You Qi asked readily, “So how exactly did you two meet? Who suggested living together first? Did you two really hit it off?”
“…What do you want for breakfast?” You Xu understood; she was deliberately teasing her.
You Qi, having gotten a good deal, smiled and said, “Whatever.”
After breakfast, You Xu noticed that Duan Min, who was usually quiet, was even more reserved and silent today. Thinking he hadn’t slept enough, she told him to go and rest, “You get some rest first, I’ll take Qi Qi to buy some daily necessities.”
Duan Min lowered his eyelashes and gave a faint “Mmm. “
You Xu’s place was a three-bedroom, two-living-room apartment. She lived in the master bedroom, gave the guest room to Duan Min, and there was a small room for storage, so the two sisters slept together.
You Qi’s parents had passed away early, and You Xu’s parents took her in to raise her. The cousins had thus grown up together, often slept together, and were very close.
So when You Qi came to stay this time, You Xu couldn’t very well kick her out again, so she stayed with her for a few days. Seeing You Xu so unhurried, even exchanging goodnights with You Qi and happily sleeping together, the system finally couldn’t help but ask, “Why don’t you have any sense of crisis?”
You Xu rubbed her eyes, sleepily saying, “My trust level is already 75, don’t panic, I can survive.” Besides, these past few days, apart from Duan Min being a little down, it seemed he hadn’t shown any interest in You Qi.
“80 or higher is the safe range,” the system lamented, “Don’t underestimate the female lead’s halo, your trust level has dropped to 60!”
“What?!” You Xu was shocked. The two of them were right under her nose, and she hadn’t noticed any interaction. She felt like a teacher catching a student in a relationship. She’d already lost 15 trust points before anything even started; if there were any signs, her trust level would go into negative territory.
Her heart ached so much she wanted to pound her chest. She forced a few deep breaths to calm herself, then turned to look at You Qi, who was fast asleep beside her. You Qi had a small, delicate face, refined features, and soft, shoulder-length black hair. The two women bore a resemblance; You Qi was lively and spirited, while You Xu possessed a gentler, Jiangnan-style beauty, like a landscape painting with soft lines.
Although You Xu was a transmigrator, her appearance and soul might not be identical, but she felt that Duan Min might actually like You Qi’s lively and adorable looks.
To sleep well, one must be calm and at peace before bed; if anything gets stuck, falling asleep becomes extremely difficult.
You Xu couldn’t sleep, stubbornly staying awake until the middle of the night. She then quietly got out of bed, intending to go to the kitchen to heat up a cup of milk before returning to try and fall asleep.
Passing through the dark living room, You Xu noticed a figure standing in the middle. Her heart skipped a beat: “Who?!”
With a snap, You Xu quickly switched on the light and saw Duan Min. She immediately breathed a sigh of relief: “Duan Min, what are you doing here? Can’t sleep? Why didn’t you turn on the light?”
Duan Min didn’t speak, just stared at her intently, his brown eyes appearing dark in the dim light.
You Xu had only asked casually, not intending to pursue the matter further. She was used to Duan Min’s frequent speech impediments and walked towards the kitchen. “Want some milk? I’ll make you a cup.”
Duan Min used to not drink milk, but seeing You Xu drink it every day, he tried a couple of sips, not really liking it. He much preferred milk made with powdered milk, especially with two large spoonfuls of honey.
Just as You Xu opened the powdered milk can, she heard Duan Min say, “Something’s on your mind.” His tone was certain.
“Why are you unhappy?” Duan Min took the powdered milk can from her hand and looked down at her.
You Xu: “I had a great time shopping with You Qi today, so I ate too much and my stomach is a little uncomfortable because I haven’t digested it all yet.”
She couldn’t very well say, “My cousin is the female lead, and you’re destined to fall in love with her. I, the cannon fodder extra, am thus having a heart attack and developing insomnia,” could she?
His quiet gaze was so clear that it seemed he could see into a person’s heart, and You Xu looked away uncomfortably.
She turned to grab a cup, but Duan Min grabbed her wrist. He said, “Why are you lying?”
You Xu paused, sighed, and looked at him with a hint of resignation. “What do you want me to say?”
Duan Min said slowly, “I just want to know why you’re unhappy.”
You Xu looked at him. “You really want to know?”
“Yes.”
“Okay,” You Xu met his gaze seriously, then said with a straight face, “If you were a dog.”
Duan Min: “?”
You Xu had intended to make something up but then remembered the 15 points of trust she’d lost, and added with a touch of emotion, “Or an ugly stray dog.”
Duan Min: “……”
“If an owner adopted you, treated you well, and liked you,” You Xu said, “but then he got an even cuter and more lovable dog, and treated it even better, and it looks like you might have been abandoned.”
You Xu paused, then continued, “What would you do?”
Duan Min didn’t answer immediately, but instead mimicked her earlier question, “You want to know the answer?”
You Xu looked at him intently and nodded.
Duan Min’s tone was matter-of-fact: “Bite off that owner’s neck.”
You Xu: “…”
How am I supposed to respond to that answer?
The author has something to say:
You Xu: What a terrifying dog, in short, Mad Dog.
Duan Min: ?
–No
