Ji Xiaozhuo and Nuo Nuo spent their time in the kindergarten in the family compound, progressing from the lowest to the highest class. When they turned seven, they were finally ready to officially begin primary school.
Primary school was very different from kindergarten; the teachers were much stricter. On their first day, the homeroom teacher demanded that the children listen attentively and not talk or fidget. This was practically torture for the children just starting primary school— except for Nuo Nuo, of course.
Nuo Nuo was always a very patient child; she could sit motionless from the moment she woke up until bedtime, let alone from the start of class until the end. So, she obediently sat upright, listening attentively.
Nuo Nuo’s exceptionally well-behaved demeanor contrasted sharply with the rest of the children who were constantly fidgeting, quickly catching the teachers’ attention. The teachers thus looked at her differently than with the other children, showing her immense affection.
Therefore, when the teacher needed to call on a child to answer a question, Nuo Nuo was the first one called upon.
Nuo Nuo blinked twice, stood up from her seat, and immediately attracted the attention of the whole class. Some sharp-eyed children noticed a strange thing on Nuo Nuo’s ear and couldn’t help but whisper among themselves, discussing it with the children around them. Everyone was very curious and guessed what it was.
When class ended, a chubby little boy ran up to Nuo Nuo’s desk and pointed to the hearing aid on Nuo Nuo’s ear, asking, “Nuo Nuo, what are you wearing on your ear?”
Nuo Nuo touched her ear, thought for a moment, and answered him truthfully, “It’s a hearing aid.”
Children of this age don’t know what a hearing aid is, so the chubby boy asked curiously, “What is a hearing aid? Why do you have one and we don’t?”
Nuo Nuo didn’t want to talk about her hearing problem, but remembering Aunt Tang’s advice before school to get along well with her classmates, she knew that if she didn’t explain, the other person would be unhappy. So she explained carefully, “A hearing aid is something that makes you hear very clearly. Because I can’t hear in this ear, I wear this.”
The chubby boy didn’t react for two seconds, then suddenly widened his eyes, took two steps back, and pointed at Nuo Nuo, shouting, “So you’re deaf!”
“Wow, she’s deaf! Should we stay away from her?”
“Yeah, what if we become deaf too?”
“Can I ask the teacher to change my seat? I’m afraid to sit in front of her; I’m afraid I’ll become deaf too.”
The children discussed this with varying degrees of fear and surprise, automatically moving away from Nuo Nuo as if she were something terrifying.
Nuo Nuo’s eyes darkened, she pursed her lips, and silently lowered her head to read her book, ignoring the words of those around her.
She’d gotten used to it over the years.
Just then, the chubby boy who had just pointed at Nuo Nuo and called her deaf suddenly let out a scream. He clutched his head, hissing and gasping for breath, while a blackboard eraser lay quietly on the floor beside him.
He’d been attacked by the blackboard eraser.
The pain subsided, and the chubby boy turned around angrily, “Who hit me with the blackboard eraser? Step forward!”
“I did it.” Ji Xiaozhuo walked down from the podium, brushing the chalk dust off his hands as he went.
“Why did you hit me?” The chubby boy was a little confused by Ji Xiaozhuo’s frank attitude. In the past, people who accidentally hit him always looked afraid of being beaten up. Why did this person look like he wanted to beat him up again?
However, seeing that Ji Xiaozhuo was neither as tall nor as strong as him, the chubby boy snorted contemptuously, raised his fist in front of Ji Xiaozhuo, and said, “Are you looking for death?”
Ji Xiaozhuo didn’t take this big chubby boy seriously at all. “I think you’re the one looking for death. If you dare to say Wen Nuo is deaf again, I’ll beat you every time I see you!”
Being threatened like this in public by a kid who wasn’t as strong as him, the chubby boy felt extremely embarrassed and shouted loudly, “She is deaf, otherwise why would she wear a hearing aid? Can’t deaf people even be called that?”
“You really are looking for death!” After saying that, Ji Xiaozhuo raised his fist and rushed forward, punching the chubby boy in the face, making him stagger back two steps and fall to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The chubby boy lay frozen on the ground, unable to believe he’d been hit, especially in front of so many people. Always a little tyrant at home and kindergarten, he was furious. With a howl, he scrambled to his feet and charged at Ji Xiaozhuo, fist in hand. “You dare hit me? I’ll beat you to death!”
The two instantly erupted into a brawl.
Although Ji Xiaozhuo had been a chubby little boy, he’d grown taller and slimmer with age, already showing signs of becoming as slender and upright as Ji Yan. The chubby boy, however, was a head taller and twice the size of Ji Xiaozhuo. With such a stark size difference, the surrounding classmates thought Ji Xiaozhuo was about to get a beating and covered their eyes in disbelief.
However, the reality surprised the children greatly.
Ji Xiaozhuo decisively defeated the chubby boy, who was beaten so badly he cried loudly, completely powerless to fight back. It was only after the homeroom teacher intervened that the poor boy was rescued from Ji Xiaozhuo’s clutches.
But by then, the chubby boy was a horribly distorted version of himself; it was uncertain whether his parents would even recognize him.
A fight on the first day of school, and such a serious one at that, naturally couldn’t be kept secret from the parents. The homeroom teacher had no choice but to call both sets of parents.
The chubby boy’s parents initially thought their little tyrant had beaten up someone else’s child again and were preparing to apologize as usual, only to be met with their son’s face swollen like a pig’s head, leaving them instantly dumbfounded.
The chubby boy’s mother shouted excitedly, “Who hit my child?”
The homeroom teacher, fearing the parents might hurt their child in their agitation, quickly stepped forward to calm them down, saying, “Zhu Zixiao’s mother, please don’t get agitated. The children had a small disagreement and that’s why they hit each other. Let’s sit down and resolve this peacefully, okay?”
Zhu Zixiao’s father looked around at the children present. Besides his own chubby son, there was only a little girl and a little boy. However, he felt that the quiet, fair-skinned little girl didn’t seem like the type to hit his son, leaving only the handsome and refined little boy.
Zhu Zixiao’s father pointed at Ji Xiaozhuo and asked the teacher, “Did this child hit my son?”
Zhu Zixiao’s father was also tall and strong, somewhat intimidating. It was clear that Zhu Zixiao’s physique was inherited from his father. The teacher, fearing that he might hit the child in anger, subconsciously hid Ji Xiaozhuo behind her and comforted him, “Zhu Zixiao’s father, don’t be angry. It was indeed Ji Xiaozhuo and Zhu Zixiao who had a conflict, but it was because Zhu Zixiao first said that Wen Nuo was deaf. Ji Xiaozhuo was also angry and hit him. The child is still young and doesn’t understand. Please calm down. We can talk after Ji Xiaozhuo’s parents arrive, okay?”
“No need to say anything!” Zhu Zixiao’s father waved his hand to stop the teacher and said directly, “Teacher, please move Zhu Zixiao to sit in front of Ji Xiaozhuo.”
“Huh?” The homeroom teacher thought she had misheard. “Zhu Zixiao’s father, what did you say?”
Father Zhu patiently repeated himself, completely baffled the homeroom teacher.
Mrs. Zhu walked apologetically to Nuo Nuo, patted her little head, and apologized, “Little girl, I’m so sorry. Our Zhu Zixiao is so naughty. Auntie will teach him a lesson when I get home, and I promise he won’t dare to say anything to you again.”
After saying that, Mrs. Zhu walked over to Ji Xiaozhuo and said to him, “Child, from now on, our Zhu Zixiao will sit in front of you. Can you help your uncle and auntie keep an eye on him? If he misbehaves, just give him a good spanking, as long as you don’t hurt him. Can you help your uncle and auntie with this?”
Ji Xiaozhuo was also stunned, which was rare for him. He thought that the chubby boy’s parents had come to settle scores with him and was thinking of a solution. Who knew that the plot would be so magical.
While everyone was stunned, the chubby boy, the victim, was the first to realize his parents’ meaning and immediately let out a loud wail, “Mom and Dad, you’ve gone too far! I’m going to tell Grandpa and Grandma you’re abusing me!”
Father Zhu slapped him across the face. “Shut up! Your grandparents are on vacation abroad and can’t protect you right now. Don’t expect them to come to your rescue. From now on, you better behave yourself, or I’ll beat you to death!”
Zhu Zixiao burst into tears, his sorrow overflowing.
The homeroom teacher finally understood what had happened and was overjoyed. She really liked such understanding parents; she dreaded parents who blindly spoiled their children.
That’s good now.
So, when Tang Tang rushed to school, Zhu parents had already taken Zhu Zixiao home. The matter was resolved before it was even officially settled.
Upon learning the reason for Ji Xiaozhuo’s fight, Tang Tang and Ji Yan didn’t criticize him much, only telling him not to act impulsively, to think things through before acting, and to control the force he used.
However, precisely because of Ji Xiaozhuo’s display of absolute strength, the surrounding children no longer dared to say that Nuo Nuo was deaf to her face. Zhu Zixiao, the chubby boy, was also moved to sit in front of Ji Xiaozhuo, where he would get a good beating if he caused trouble or misbehaved. At first, he was unconvinced, but after being beaten, he became obedient. Later, he became incredibly well-behaved, no longer daring to cause trouble or joke around in class. This made Zhu’s parents extremely grateful to Ji Xiaozhuo, and they often bought him and Nuo Nuo delicious treats.
Because of this, the Zhu family and the Ji family grew closer. The two families often got together for meals, and after several gatherings, they discovered that they shared similar interests and had compatible personalities. Before long, they became good friends, and their three children naturally became close companions as well.
Zhu Zixiao, in particular, underwent quite a transformation. At first, he was the one who had called Nuo Nuo deaf, but later, whenever he heard someone making fun of her, he would follow Ji Xiaozhuo into the fray and help beat the bullies up.
Ji Xiaozhuo’s elementary school years could practically be summed up as a history of putting naughty kids in their place. Throughout his entire time in elementary school, anyone who dared to mock or discriminate against Nuo Nuo was singled out by him and given a thorough beating. If they refused to learn their lesson after the first beating, he would beat them again, until they finally gave in.
As a result, Ji Xiaozhuo became the undisputed boss of the entire school. Mention Ji Xiaozhuo from First Elementary School, and everyone knew exactly who you were talking about.
Of course, Ji Xiaozhuo was famous not just because he had hard fists, but also because he was handsome and excelled academically.
A boy who could fight, was good-looking, and earned excellent grades was bound to attract attention. By the time he reached fifth grade, more and more girls would blush and feel their hearts race whenever they saw him. Love letters began arriving one after another, piling up on Ji Xiaozhuo’s desk.
Many girls assumed Nuo Nuo was Ji Xiaozhuo’s younger sister and asked her to deliver love letters to him. However, Nuo Nuo always shook her head dismissively, ignoring the girls. Eventually, the girls stopped contacting her, though everyone privately said that Ji Xiaozhuo had a difficult younger sister.
Ji Xiaozhuo didn’t care much for love letters; he was too lazy to even read them and would just throw them in the trash. He’d rather spend that time playing basketball.
Ji Xiaozhuo loved sports, especially basketball. Besides PE class, he would play for an hour every day after school before going home, while Nuo Nuo would wait for him with a towel and water, doing her homework while waiting, completely out of place on the bustling basketball court. However, many boys who played basketball with Ji Xiaozhuo envied him, saying they wished they also had such a wonderful younger sister.
Ji Xiaozhuo would always proudly say, “You can’t be envious of this. Not all little sisters are as well-behaved as my Nuo Nuo.”
Everyone wanted to punch him.
Elementary school days passed peacefully and happily for five years, until the change came in the second semester of fifth grade.
That semester, a striking figure appeared on the elementary school’s basketball court— a girl with a ponytail, fair skin, and beautiful features joined Ji Xiaozhuo and his friends. They played basketball together, sweating and radiating youthful energy.
