The sun was halfway down, the clouds still edged with gold. The diluted sunlight, thin and translucent, fell entirely into her eyes.

There were still blue ink spots on his sleeve, leaving a faint blue tinge after washing. Qi Ying carefully held it in her palm. She didn’t dare to pull too hard, afraid of pulling the school uniform off his shoulder. Ji Rang carried her schoolbag in one hand and had the other in his pocket, walking lazily ahead.

When they reached the outside of the teaching building, not far away, Yu Zhuo stood by the flower bed playing on his phone, glancing up every now and then. The first few glances were normal, but the last one, first sweeping over Ji Rang, then over Qi Ying behind him, almost made his eyes pop out. He shoved his phone into his pocket and rushed over.

Ji Rang saw him too, stopped where he was, and when Yu Zhuo reached him, he suddenly threw Qi Ying’s schoolbag into his arms.

Yu Zhuo, considering it was his sister’s schoolbag, tolerated it. He looked at Qi Ying behind him with exasperation, ignoring that she couldn’t hear him, and snapped at her, “Sis, come here!”

Ji Rang didn’t turn around, but reached out and grabbed the school uniform on his shoulder, shaking it to signal Qi Ying to let go.

She obediently released it.

The faint force finally disappeared completely.

Ji Rang took a step to leave, and Yu Zhuo couldn’t help but say irritably, “Can you stay away from my sister? She’s not like the girls you are used to playing with.”

Ji Rang laughed out loud as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.

He turned his head to look at Yu Zhuo. His narrow, long eyes looked cold when they drooped down, and sinister when they slanted up; his dark pupils were like the winter night sky, such that even the light in them seemed to carry an unyielding chill.

Yu Zhuo’s heart skipped a beat when he saw him.

Only now did he finally have a clear understanding of this legendary ruthless and sinister school bully.

Ji Rang smiled nonchalantly, a smirk playing on his lips, but his tone was chilling: “Whether it’s the same or not, I’ll only know after I’ve tried.”

Yu Zhuo was furious.

It looked like he was about to fight him.

Ji Rang scoffed, “What? Want to get beaten up in front of your sister?”

Yu Zhuo instantly recalled the fear of being dominated by the sharp pain in his lower abdomen yesterday afternoon. Damn it, he couldn’t win.

A real man knows when to yield!

He gritted his teeth, glared at Ji Rang, grabbed Qi Ying’s wrist, and strode away. Qi Ying was jolted by his pull, but after quickly following him, she obediently turned back and waved to Ji Rang.

Yu Zhuo felt like he was going to explode with anger.

When he reached the school gate, he received a call from Yu Cheng, saying he would be there in ten minutes. Yu Zhuo stood under a tree, typing to Qi Ying with all his might, as if he were about to pierce the screen.

“What if Ji Rang sells you out one day, will you still help him count the money?!”

Qi Ying replied, “He wouldn’t.”

Yu Zhuo: “?”

Qi Ying: “Human trafficking is illegal.”

Yu Zhuo: “?”

Qi Ying: “He wouldn’t do anything illegal.”

Yu Zhuo: “?”

Just as he was about to explode, Qi Ying’s message came again. She told him what had happened in the hallway earlier, and Yu Zhuo’s expression changed. He immediately asked her, “Do you know those people?”

Qi Ying shook her head.

He cursed. He hadn’t expected that such a small oversight of his could be exploited. What could a special freshman like Qi Ying have done to offend those scum?

Could it be true what his father said, that bad students like to bully good girls?

He had been too careless!

Just as he was blaming himself, he saw out of the corner of his eye that Ji Rang was walking lazily out of the school gate. He patted Qi Ying’s shoulder, signalling her to stand there, and then rushed over.

As soon as Ji Rang saw him, his face showed impatience, and he looked like he was about to get angry. But Yu Zhuo spoke first, “My sister told me everything! Thank you for helping her out earlier!”

Ji Rang didn’t even bother to talk to him and turned to leave.

Yu Zhuo subconsciously grabbed his arm: “Hey, wait a minute, do you know who those people who bullied my sister were?”

Ji Rang felt like he had never been so good-tempered in his life: “Don’t you want your hands anymore?”

Yu Zhuo awkwardly withdrew his hand, feeling very embarrassed: “I’m sorry…”

Just as he finished speaking, the window of the inconspicuous but expensive black Phaeton that had been parked at the school gate slowly rolled down, and a short-haired girl wearing sunglasses pressed the sunglasses down under her nose, revealing a pair of slender eyes.

A smile played on her red lips: “Oh, I didn’t realize you were into both men and women.”

Ji Rang: “…”

Did he owe these siblings something in his past life?

Yu Zhuo instinctively felt that the big boss might be about to hit someone, so he quickly took two steps back. “Bye-bye, goodbye, I’m leaving.”

Ji Rang: “…” He could only vent his anger on the woman in the car. “What are you doing here?”

Ji Qian slowly took off her sunglasses.

A face with deep features, phoenix eyes, red lips, and slender eyebrows was revealed. Just looking at this face, one would only think that she was cold and unapproachable. But her words would definitely shatter that illusion. “I can come and go as I please. Did you build this place?”

Ji Rang turned around and left.

Ji Qian felt that in the six months since she last saw her cousin, he had become more and more unruly, and couldn’t even take a joke. She clung to the car door and shouted, “Don’t go, don’t go, I was wrong, okay!”

Seeing that Ji Rang showed no signs of stopping, she became anxious: “If you don’t come back, I’ll run you over with my car!”

This made Ji Rang laugh in anger.

However, it did work. He turned around, giving her only ten seconds to get to the point. “What is it?”

Ji Qian asked angrily. “Can’t I come to have dinner with you if there’s nothing wrong?”

Ji Rang paused, his expression finally softening. “Is there trouble with the company project again?”

Whenever there was trouble with the company project, and Ji Qian was being tormented by the board of directors, she would come to him for dinner.

Ji Qian was his uncle’s daughter. After graduating from business school, she took over her uncle’s hotel and had become very successful in the industry over the years. She was a well-known, aloof, and beautiful female CEO among the younger generation of talented young people.

Of course, “aloof and beautiful” was the public persona; only her family knew her true nature.

In the past two years, for some reason, Ji Qian had started investing heavily in the game and animation industry, incurring significant losses. The board of directors, already resentful of her young age, now had something to say about her and was causing trouble every few days.

Ji Rang wasn’t interested in the power struggles of the adult world, but among the Ji family, the only person he could still speak to calmly was Ji Qian.

Ji Qian pursed her lips, noncommittal. He didn’t say anything more, walked around the front of the car, opened the door, and sat in the passenger seat.

The car slowly drove away, turning around as it passed Qi Ying and Yu Zhuo. Yu Zhuo leaned forward slightly, his tall frame shielding his sister from the dappled sunlight, seemingly saying something.

Qi Ying clearly couldn’t hear him, but still looked at him earnestly, a faint smile always playing on her lips.

Did she smile like that to everyone?

Ji Rang scoffed.

Ji Qian glanced at him, “You like that kid?”

Ji Rang felt like he’d been stepped on: “Who likes her?!”

Ji Qian patted his arm, “It’s okay, I support you. In modern society, sexual orientation is free, that kid is tall and handsome, quite a good match for you.”

Ji Rang: “?”

Damn it.

Five minutes later, Yu Cheng arrived in his red Lavida.

As soon as he got in the car, he asked Yu Zhuo, “How was school today?”

Yu Zhuo thought for a moment, “It was alright, actually about the same as junior high, just a bit more homework. Our homeroom teacher is a young man who just graduated, I thought he’d be easy to fool, but this morning someone was late and was punished by standing all morning. New broom sweeps clean.”

Yu Cheng: “Who asked you? I’m asking Ying Ying.”

Yu Zhuo: “?”

Am I really your biological son?

Qi Ying probably guessed what Yu Cheng would ask and had sent Yu Zhuo a message: Don’t tell uncle anything, he’s busy with work.

Yu Zhuo thought about it and agreed; his programmer father was so busy he was almost bald, he shouldn’t add to his worries. So he just said a few simple words to reassure Yu Cheng.

When they got home, Wu Yinghua hadn’t returned yet. The kitchen was empty, so Yu Zhuo and Qi Ying went to do their homework first, while Yu Cheng called his wife.

Wu Yinghua’s loud voice could be heard even through the phone: “I’m at the market buying groceries. I ran into an old classmate this afternoon, we chatted for too long and I got carried away. Ask Zhuo’er what he wants to eat.”

Yu Cheng went over and asked, “Your mom asked if you have anything you want to eat.”

Yu Zhuo was about to say “anything,” but then he suddenly remembered Ji Rang.

How could his fists be so hard?!

Yu Zhuo turned back and said firmly, “Beef!”

Eat beef, grow strong, and beat Ji Rang!

Wu Yinghua quickly returned with the groceries. After Qi Ying and Yu Zhuo finished their homework, the food was served. Yu Zhuo had just sat down and picked up a piece of pickled pepper beef[1], but before he could even eat it, his mother came over mysteriously with a file folder. She said, holding it like a treasure: “Son, look what Mom bought you!”

With that tone, Yu Zhuo really thought his mother had secretly bought him an apartment.

He looked down.

XX Insurance.

Yu Zhuo: “…”

Yu Cheng also took it and glanced at it. “Why did you suddenly think of buying insurance? What is this, accident insurance? How old is Zhuo’er and you’re already buying this for him?”

Wu Yinghua glared at him: “What do you know? Life is unpredictable, and accidents are inevitable. The only thing to do is to have adequate protection before they happen!”

Yu Zhuo thought that with his mother’s level of education, she shouldn’t be able to say such a thing.

Sure enough, Wu Yinghua continued: “Didn’t I run into an old classmate this afternoon? He’s been in the insurance industry for ten years, he’s a professional. Zhuo’er is still young, the earlier you buy it, the better. Guizhi said that once he’s forty, not only will the money be returned, but there will also be dividends!”

Yu Cheng said: “Sounds reasonable, how much is it?”

Wu Yinghua: “It’s cheap, only three thousand a year.”

Yu Zhuo counted on his fingers, thirty years, three thousand a year, a total of ninety thousand, not too much, buying protection, and if nothing happens, you can get your principal back, it does seem pretty good.

The family of three was all smiles. Qi Ying, who had just been looking at the contract, handed it over, pointing to a clause with her index finger and gesturing to Yu Zhuo with a puzzled look. Yu Zhuo looked down and saw that the clause stated: “Compensation is only payable in case of total disability or death.” He was shocked: “Mom, what does this mean!”

Wu Yinghua looked at it and hesitated, “I don’t quite understand either, but Guizhi said that if something happens to you, the insurance company will pay one million.”

Yu Zhuo realized: “One million is only paid in case of total disability or death. So if I only lose one leg, do I have to break the other one myself?”

Wu Yinghua: “?”
