“You’ve gone too far.” Shen Chengfeng lowered his eyes, his gaze calm and composed as he looked at Xiao Jing’s scheming mouth.

Xiao Jing instinctively stepped back, but only moved slightly. One hand reached around her waist and pulled her back into the embrace.

Her face flushed crimson in waves, and the flutter in her heart, which had been dormant for a long time, beat even more joyfully.

Shen Chengfeng leaned close to her ear and lowered his voice, “Now you can refuse my uncle.”

Xiao Jing snapped out of her daze, raised her hands and hooked them around her captain’s neck, her lips curving into a wide smile. She said, “Sir, I’m sorry, but the captain and I have really liked each other for a long time.”

“I don’t believe it.” Yan Mo covered his chest with one hand, enduring this heavy blow. He roared and then pointed fiercely at his own nephew, “Don’t call me uncle anymore.”

Then, a loud bang was heard coming from inside the ward.

Xiao Jing’s tense nerves slowly relaxed. Would General Yan Mo stop bothering her from now on?

“Clang.”

Xiao Jing turned around in surprise and saw that the man who had just been holding her with righteous indignation was now lying stiffly on the bed, his clothes soaked in blood, and the situation seemed to be getting worse.

“Captain, Captain?” She gently patted his face, and after confirming that he had really passed out, she bit her finger without thinking.

“No.” Shen Chengfeng grabbed his hand, his eyes unfocused, as if he was in a daze.

Xiao Jing shook her head, pried open his hands that were restraining her, and without hesitation dripped a few drops of blood onto his wound.

“Captain, it will be fine soon. Don’t worry, no one will know.” Xiao Jing took the wound medicine from the treatment device next to her, cleaned the wound simply, and then reapplied the medicine.

The bleeding from the wound stopped quickly, and a thin layer of ointment was applied around the wound like a protective film.

Xiao Jing wiped her hands clean and looked at the man whose brows were still furrowed even in his unconscious state. She couldn’t help but lean down and gently smooth the creases on his forehead.

In fact, Shen Chengfeng in this state lost his frightening indifference. His bloodless face and pale lips made him look just like the weak scholars in the book. He had a scholarly air about him and a bit of humanity.

“Thump, thump, thump.” The sound of footsteps echoed steadily in the corridor.

Xiao Jing suddenly stood up and walked to the window. This was the third floor. If it were any other time, she would have jumped down with great fanfare, but now…

“Thump.” Xiao Jing fell to the ground with a dull thud. She looked up at the twinkling stars in the night sky, a half-smile playing on her lips.

The ward door was tightly closed, and a strong smell of blood permeated the air.

Shen Shengyi glanced expressionlessly at the nurse who had fainted on the ground, then sniffed the faint smell of medicine in the air before cautiously walking towards the hospital bed.

Shen Chengfeng lay on the bed with his eyes still closed, his chest and shoulders stained with blood.

Shen Shengyi hurriedly lifted his clothes and looked in surprise at the wound that had begun to stop bleeding. He glanced around the quiet ward and noticed a smell in the air that didn’t belong there.

“Sir, the nurse is awake.” The guard helped the nurse, who had regained consciousness, to her feet.

The nurse clutched her head, groggily saying, “A comrade just forced his way in.”

Shen Shengyi walked to the window. There was a footprint on the windowsill. He peeked out into the yard and saw a figure disappear into the darkness.

“Sir, I will send men down to chase after them immediately.”

“No need.” Shen Shengyi waved his hand, signaling everyone to leave.

The ward returned to silence once again.

Shen Chengfeng was very uncomfortable with being stared at with a purpose. His eyelids were heavy, but he still opened his eyes.

“Awake?” Shen Shengyi tapped the table lightly with his fingertips, then picked up a glass of water and took a sip.

Shen Chengfeng sat up, his vision blurred as if a mist was swirling around him. He couldn’t see who was in front of him, but he recognized his second brother from his voice.

Shen Shengyi put down his water glass and said meaningfully, “Your wound can be treated now.”

“What does Second Brother want to say?”

“After my mother went to Tie Ying last time, she came back and discussed it with me. At first, I thought it was because the medicine I was researching had worked. Unfortunately, this time it had no effect at all.”

“Now it’s working,” Shen Chengfeng said.

“Yes, it’s definitely working now.” Shen Shengyi stared intently at his third brother, who was trying very hard to stay awake, then stood up and walked over.

“Second brother seems to have something to say to me.” Shen Chengfeng met the eyes that were leaning closer. In the silence, their eyes clashed fiercely like gladiators on a battlefield, neither willing to give in.

Shen Shengyi stood a step away from him, a slight smile playing on his lips. “Your second brother knows your personality very well. If you don’t want to talk, even if I had ten hands, I couldn’t pry your mouth open.”

“Second Brother, if you have nothing else to say, please leave.”

“Perhaps you forgot, there are surveillance cameras here.” Shen Shengyi raised his hand, his fingertips holding a small USB flash drive.

Shen Chengfeng’s face darkened, and he subconsciously tried to snatch the USB drive away.

Shen Shengyi subtly dodged the hand that was suddenly reaching out to him and said with a smile, “If it were the healthy Shen Chengfeng, I might not be confident of winning, but you only have half a life left now, so don’t push yourself too hard.”

“Second brother, what exactly do you want to say?” Shen Chengfeng leaned weakly against the bed, the aftereffects of excessive blood loss making him feel dizzy and lightheaded.

Shen Shengyi stroked the pattern on the USB drive and said, “You should know why your second brother gave up his army to join the research institute.”

Shen Chengfeng remained silent.

“You should also know that in two years, no, perhaps less than two years, your blood, your saliva, and your entire body will become corroded, which means there will be no cure. You will be tortured to death by the scalding heat of your blood, and you won’t even be able to eat or drink.”

“When did Second Brother start believing in this fabricated data?” Shen Chengfeng leaned against the headboard, rubbing his forehead with one hand. “Dr. A was just thinking about breaking away from the country. All his research data was just an illusion.”

“Third brother, no matter what your second brother does, it’s all to save you, even if it goes against morality.” Shen Shengyi poured a glass of water and handed it to him, deliberately softening his voice. “You can rest now.”

As Shen Chengfeng saw him approaching, he unexpectedly stretched out his right hand and, like a tiger emerging from its den, subdued his 1.9-meter-tall second brother in one move.

Shen Shengyi hadn’t expected that he would still have the strength to pounce on him. Just as he reacted, a hot hand pressed against his wrist, and he subconsciously released his fingertips.

“Thump.”

The USB drive fell to the ground, the light shone down, and a person rolled off the bed, quickly picked it up, and the next moment, smoke filled the air as the entire USB drive was completely corroded.

Shen Shengyi was unable to stop him in time and angrily shouted, “Shen Chengfeng, stop!”

Shen Chengfeng opened his palm, and the small USB drive had long since evaporated completely in his hand.

Shen Shengyi frowned and said in a more serious tone, “I have plenty of opportunities to find out what I want to know.”

“You can investigate, but I can also destroy it.” Shen Chengfeng put on his gloves and walked out of the ward without looking back.

Shen Shengyi stood there, watching the figure who was weak and powerless just a moment ago now walk out of the ward with his head held high and chest out. If he hadn’t treated him personally, he probably would have thought that he had only suffered a minor injury, well, a minor injury that would heal after a good night’s sleep.

Inside the monitoring room, the security guard who was having a late-night snack suddenly heard a noise outside the door. He peeked out, but when he saw his boss appear like a ghost, he quickly stood up straight.

Shen Chengfeng ignored the terrified security guard, went straight inside, turned on all the surveillance cameras, and pulled up all the information from half an hour ago.

Cleared them all at once.

As the first rays of dawn broke through the darkness, a vehicle quietly drove through the camp.

Xiao Jing, who was lying in the infirmary receiving anti-inflammatory medication on drip, sat up upon hearing the bugle call outside the camp and instinctively looked out the window.

Jiang Xin sat up excitedly, “They’re back?”

Xiao Jing was puzzled. “What? Who’s back?”

Jiang Xin didn’t answer, but threw his head back and laughed loudly. After laughing for a while, he quickly stopped and lay back down with his face contorted in pain. He may have laughed too hard and lost his breath, causing his bones to crack again.

Xiao Jing clicked her tongue, “It breaks my heart to see you torturing yourself like this.”

Jiang Xin calmed himself down and slowly moved his feet, walking step by step towards the windowsill.

Xiao Jing said, “You have to be careful. If you fall again, it won’t just be a simple fracture.”

Jiang Xin leaned against the window and looked down at the parked military vehicles. Everyone got off the vehicles exhausted. After three days and two nights of intensive military training, everyone was dehydrated, and some even collapsed as soon as they got off the vehicles.

They were exhausted, more exhausted than ever before.

Xiao Jing stood to one side and asked, “Is the military training over?”

Jiang Xin nodded. “It should be over.”

“We’ve lost,” Xiao Jing said with certainty.

Jiang Xin gave him a cold glance. “Don’t you know how to wish us well?”

“I just like to tell the truth. For example, you look really handsome today.” Xiao Jing blinked her big eyes and looked at Jiang Xin, who was covered up from head to toe. She didn’t forget to give him a thumbs up.

“Hahaha.” Jiang Xin gently poked Xiao Jing’s shoulder with her wooden board in her hand. “I like your honesty. I also think you look really cool today.”

Xiao Jing tossed her hair and proudly raised her head. “You’re wrong about that. When have I ever not been handsome?”

Jiang Xin nodded, “That’s right, when have we ever not been handsome?”

Cheng Chen stared at the two who were singing in unison, then turned to Ji Shanlin, who had regained his senses, and said, “Don’t look at those two, they’re both idiots.”

Ji Shanlin was somewhat bewildered.

The fool turned around, revealing a row of big white teeth with a smug look on his face. “Cheng Chen, come here quickly, our comrades have returned in triumph.”

The second fool also turned around, revealing a row of bright white teeth, “Ji Shanlin, come here quickly, our comrades have returned in triumph.”

Ji Shanlin snapped out of his daze and looked at Cheng Chen, who was sitting two seats away from him. The two nodded to each other knowingly.

Those two kids by the window, they must be idiots.”Knock knock knock.”

Pei Yi knocked on the door, then pushed it open and entered.

All eyes turned to that direction.

Pei Yi entered, saluted the group, and said in a powerful voice, “Thank you for your hard work.”

Jiang Xin hopped over on his hind legs and asked excitedly, “Vice Captain, did we win?”

Pei Yi shook his head, somewhat disappointed, but clearly having expected it. He said, “The Lang Hu suffered almost no casualties. With just the four of us, our chances were too low.”

“It’s alright, everyone did their best. Besides, this is just a drill. Our real skills are meant to be used on the battlefield.” Jiang Xin patted his shoulder.

“Alright, you can rest now. The instructor specifically told us that everyone has worked hard this time, and once you’ve recovered from your injuries, we’ll have a three-day vacation and go to North Island for a holiday.”

“Did the instructor really say that?” Cheng Chen asked, half believing and half doubting.

Pei Yi smiled and said, “Perhaps the instructors also felt that everyone had worked too hard this time.”

“The instructor wasn’t this understanding when we completed the mission last time. Why did he suddenly become so understanding this time? Wait, is it on public funds?” Cheng Chen asked again.

Pei Yi glanced at him sideways, “Round-trip travel expenses will be reimbursed, as for food, clothing, and lodging, we’ll split the cost equally.”

“I knew it.” Cheng Chen shook his head. “The organization really is a stingy bunch.”

“Alright, stop being so cheeky.” Pei Yi tugged at Jiang Xin’s arm. “Your fracture should take a month or two to heal, right?”

“Vice-captain, you’re underestimating me. Don’t even mention a month or two, I can have the splint removed tomorrow.” Jiang Xin laughed triumphantly a few times, but then laughed so hard that he choked on his own breath.

The military songs played loud and clear as Xiao Jing leaned against the windowsill, looking down at the green grass in the yard.

A car slowly drove in and finally parked outside the medical room.

The guard opened the car door, stood up straight, and saluted the people inside.

As always, Shen Chengfeng got out of the car wrapped in his thick military uniform and walked towards the building next to him without looking back.

Xiao Jing’s heart skipped a beat, and her legs moved uncontrollably towards the outside of the infirmary.

Shen Chengfeng heard a noise behind him and turned around.

Xiao Jing jogged over, but stopped panting because of the wound on her side. The two of them stared at each other without saying a word.

“Is your injury healed?” Shen Chengfeng broke the silence.

Xiao Jing shook her head, “Why is the captain back so soon?”

“I have something urgent to attend to.” After scrutinizing the thin, frail body from head to toe, Shen Chengfeng turned and continued walking forward.

Xiao Jing followed closely behind him, keeping a distance of two meters between them. If she hadn’t witnessed firsthand how horrific the wound was, she would have mistakenly thought that the captain in front of her had returned unharmed.

Shen Chengfeng stood in front of the office and swiped his ID card.

Xiao Jing noticed where he was going: the archives.

This was a confidential place, and given her current status, she was not allowed to enter.

“If there’s nothing else, you can go back now.” With that, Shen Chengfeng went straight into the room.

Xiao Jing lingered outside the door, occasionally leaning against the wall to gaze at the tightly closed door. She didn’t know why she was so persistent in guarding this place, but she just wanted to stay here.

“Thump.” After an unknown amount of time, the tightly closed door was finally opened from the inside.

The dim light shone on the two of them, and a faint smell of blood filled the air.

“What are you doing here?” Shen Chengfeng noticed the pair of burning eyes in front of him and closed the door behind him.

Xiao Jing grinned, her face radiating an innocent charm. She said, “The vice-captain just said that once we’ve recovered from our injuries, we’ll be allowed three days off next week to go on a trip to North Island. Is that true?”

“Or do you want to give up?” Shen Chengfeng walked towards her, brushing past her shoulder before heading out of the building.

Xiao Jing followed closely behind, smiling and saying, “No, no, I just don’t understand how our instructor, who is always so strict with himself, suddenly became so human? Hahaha.”

Her laughter was somewhat stiff, clearly a forced attempt to ease the awkward atmosphere.

Shen Chengfeng maintained his stern and unsmiling expression.

Xiao Jing coughed lightly, covering her mouth, and after a moment’s hesitation, couldn’t help but ask, “Captain, your injury—”

“It’s just a minor injury,” Shen Chengfeng interrupted her.

Xiao Jing watched the figure in front of her gradually receding into the distance. Hmm, it was indeed a minor injury, just a hole in her chest that was still bleeding. Anyway, he wouldn’t die, so he might as well go all out.

Captain, you’re truly extraordinary, awesome!

“You don’t need to follow me anymore, I’m going to the Military Intelligence Institute.” Shen Chengfeng got into the car directly.

Xiao Jing saluted and watched him leave.

A gentle breeze swept through the green belt, and in addition to the fragrance of soil, there was also a sour, foul smell in the air.

Xiao Jing sniffed her clothes and found they were indeed smelling sour; she hadn’t showered for days.

Haha, no wonder it all smells bad.

The quiet stairwell was filled with the sound of orderly footsteps.

After a short rest, all the soldiers who were not injured or only slightly wounded began training, and the loud shouts of the rough men echoed across the parade ground for a long time.

Xiao Jing leaned against the wall, looked around, and after confirming that there were no extra people around, she pushed open the door, deliberately locked the captain’s dormitory, and stretched her limbs.

Xiao Jing hung her change of clothes in the bathroom and turned on the shower.

With gauze wrapped around her wound, she took out waterproof tape and applied two more loops, then hummed a tune and took a shower, completely letting loose.

A car suddenly stopped downstairs.

Shen Chengfeng looked at the documents in his hand and was certain that one document had been missed.

Qi Yue stood aside and explained, “I just sent someone to take it to the hospital for you. I didn’t expect you to come back in person. I’ll send someone to pick it up right away.”

“No need to bother, there should be a copy on the computer. I’ll go make a new one.” Shen Chengfeng strode into his dormitory building.

Qi Yue followed him upstairs.

Shen Chengfeng twisted the door of his dormitory and saw that it was locked. His brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.

Qi Yue asked cautiously, “Captain, what’s wrong?”

Shen Chengfeng put down his hand and said, avoiding the main point, “I might have locked the door when I left. Go to the office and look for the key. If you don’t have it, go to the military supplies department and get another one.”

“Yes, Captain.” Qi Yue walked out of the dormitory building with some doubt.

Hearing the footsteps fading away, Shen Chengfeng crouched down, pulled a spare key from a crack in the wall, and opened the door to go inside.

There was the intermittent sound of running water in the bathroom. He didn’t linger, locked the door behind him, and went straight to his desk.
