Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside.
Ji Rang heard a middle-aged man’s voice say, “Ying Ying’s been gone so long, why hasn’t she come back yet? Go check on her.”
Yu Zhuo’s voice cracked with anger, “That’s the women’s restroom! You go if you want!”
Ji Rang took two steps back to create distance, putting her index finger to her lips in a shushing gesture. Only after making the gesture did she realize how stupid she was; damn it, she couldn’t even speak properly.
The footsteps drew closer.
Ji Rang tugged at her collar, turned, and leaped towards the window near the ventilation shaft, vaulting over.
Qi Ying gasped silently, running to the window and looking down. At the second-floor height, Ji Rang landed steadily, stood up, clapped her hands, and strode onto the mountain bike parked below.
A roar erupted, and a black and red shadow trailed afterimages in the air before disappearing from her sight.
Behind her, Yu Zhuo crept in furtively, seeing Qi Ying standing in the rest area, and breathed a sigh of relief. He glanced nervously at the women’s restroom door and reported, “My sister’s fine, she’s looking at the scenery by the window!”
He also peered out the window, but saw nothing except for lingering smoke. Dejected, he pulled Qi Ying away.
Downstairs, Yu Cheng drove them to an Italian restaurant.
The menu was indeed outrageously expensive. Qi Ying noticed this too, flipped through the menu, and only ordered a vegetable salad. Yu Cheng noticed her thoughts, and as he looked at the menu, his eyes suddenly stung.
He said softly, “Your aunt once told me that Ying Ying loves pasta the most.”
Yu Zhuo was startled and turned to look at his father.
Yu Cheng’s eyes were a little red, which he concealed by rubbing his eyes. “I can’t do anything about your aunt passing away, and I can’t even afford to let her daughter eat pasta.”
He called the waiter over and ordered the signature pasta from the menu.
When the food arrived, Qi Ying was clearly taken aback and looked up at Yu Cheng.
Yu Cheng mouthed exaggeratedly, “Eat up.”
She smiled, nodded, grabbed her fork, twirled a strand of pasta, and put it in her mouth. This was her first time eating spaghetti, but the taste was like a familiar old friend, bouncing and skipping along her tongue in greeting.
Suddenly, a woman’s loving face flashed through her mind.
She sat opposite her, gently saying, “Ying Ying, eat up, we’ll go pick up Dad from work after you’re done.”
Her heart clenched painfully, as if pierced through by a thorny needle, the pain almost bringing tears to her eyes.
This body still couldn’t accept memories of her parents.
Qi Ying gritted her teeth and forced herself to shut out the familiar yet strange images in her mind. Yu Zhuo cut his steak, forked a few pieces, and put them on her plate. “Sis, this is delicious.”
She understood what he meant and nodded with a smile.
After lunch, Yu Cheng took them back to school to continue their classes.
The first class of the afternoon for Class Two was PE.
It was the first PE class of the semester, and the students were quite looking forward to it, having heard that the PE teacher had changed.
The school bell hadn’t rung yet, and everyone was free to do their own thing. Yue Li, who disliked sports, went to the convenience store and bought two cream popsicles. She dragged Qi Ying to sit on the steps by the basketball court, munching on them.
While eating, she chatted on WeChat, complaining, “I hate PE class the most! It’s so hot and tiring! I hope all PE classes this semester are taken over by the math teacher!”
Halfway through their meal, a basketball flew towards them, but it didn’t hit the ground with much force, rolling all the way to their feet.
Not far away, a boy in a black vest called out with a smile, “Hey, little one, throw the ball over here!”
Yue Li glanced at the muscles on his arm and blushed slightly. She put her popsicle in her mouth, picked up the basketball, and ran over.
The boy, seeing her coming, immediately laughed, “Just throw it over, go back now.”
Perhaps it was the bright sun, but his smile seemed dazzling to her.
Yue Li blushed even more, not daring to look at him, and ran back with her head down.
A dozen minutes later, the school bell rang, and Yue Li dragged Qi Ying to the assembly point. The sports committee member directed everyone to line up. The young man who had been playing basketball on the sidelines put on his white tracksuit that had been lying on the ground, picked up the basketball, and walked towards them.
He pulled a red whistle from his pocket, put it on, and announced loudly amidst whispers, “Hello, students, I’m your PE teacher this semester. My name is Shen Yue.”
Yue Li: “!”
She loved PE class!
Qi Ying watched helplessly as her deskmate, who had said she didn’t like PE, went through the entire class like she was on steroids. Even at the end of class, she seemed reluctant to leave, frequently turning back.
The girls in the class were also excitedly discussing the handsome new teacher. Yue Li silently prayed in her heart: “God, I’m willing to go without milk tea for a whole semester, so that my PE class won’t be taken over by the math teacher!”
….
After school in the afternoon, Qi Ying was still packing her bag when Yu Zhuo was already waiting at the classroom door.
Yue Li had seen him a few times and greeted him familiarly, “Little brother’s here to pick Ying Ying up from school again.”
Yu Zhuo: “…”
Who wants to be called “little brother” by a shorty?
He walked out with a cool expression, carrying Qi Ying’s schoolbag. Yue Li, arm in arm with Qi Ying, followed behind, secretly texting her: “Your little brother is so cute! I want a little brother like that too!”
She had barely finished texting, but before she could even put her phone back, she saw her “cute little brother” angrily yelling at the boys who had whistled at Qi Ying: “Whistling your mother’s ass? Want to die?”
Yue Li: “…”
Never mind.
Yu Cheng was working overtime today, so Yu Zhuo took Qi Ying to the bus stop. The bus was crowded with students leaving school, and there were no seats available. Yu Zhuo had Qi Ying stand against the advertising board while he held onto the handrail and played on his phone with one hand.
Just as the bus started moving, someone loudly said amidst the chatter, “Qi Ying, please sit here.”
Yu Zhuo turned his head and saw a girl in the first row standing up, smiling, offering Qi Ying her seat.
Qi Ying couldn’t hear him and remained quietly looking out the window. Yu Zhuo, never one to let his sister stand, naturally wouldn’t refuse and pulled Qi Ying towards the back.
Reaching the back, he thanked the girl who had offered the seat and was helping Qi Ying to sit when the girl said, “No need to thank me, it’s only right to give way to a disabled person.”
She was still smiling, her voice clear and crisp, drawing the attention of everyone on the bus.
Yu Zhuo paused.
He then shoved Qi Ying behind him, pointing at the girl’s nose: “Have you eaten shit? Your mouth stinks!”
The girl’s face froze, her smile crumbling. Someone nearby chimed in, “What’s wrong with you? She gave you her seat and you’re swearing at her?”
Yu Zhuo pointed angrily in the air, “If I hear you say ‘disabled’ again, I’ll make you disabled, you hear me?”
The girl’s expression changed; she wanted to say something but didn’t dare, and finally, under the watchful eyes of everyone on the bus, she sat back down.
Yu Zhuo sneered, took out his phone, and snapped a picture of her.
The girl was furious, “What are you doing?!”
Yu Zhuo gave her a cold look, “If my sister gets bullied in the future, I’ll send this picture to the principal and tell him you instigated it.”
The girl: “…”
Are you a primary school student? A primary school student sues a teacher, and you sue the principal?
But she was ultimately stunned and didn’t dare say anything more.
Yu Zhuo put away his phone and yelled at the surrounding students, “Looking at your dad?”
The students on the bus: “…”
Who the hell is so arrogant?
The boy in front whispered to the student next to him, “That’s the freshman who called Ji Rang a bast**d a couple of days ago. He was ambushed by Ji Rang and his gang that day, but he escaped unscathed.”
The student exclaimed, “Wow! Unbelievable! Unbelievable!”
A ten-centimeter gap was cleared around Yu Zhuo and Qi Ying, allowing for better air circulation.
After getting off the bus, Yu Zhuo took out his phone and sent the photo he had just taken to his childhood best friend, Yang Xinyuan, asking, “Do you know this girl?”
Yang Xinyuan’s message came quickly: “No. Who is she? You’ve got your eye on her? I’ll find out for you right away!”
Yu Zhuo: “Get lost, I’m not blind. Go ask around who she is, which class she’s in.”
Yang Xinyuan sent a mischievous smiley face, and a message came shortly after.
“She’s in Class 1 of the second year of high school, her name is He Jing.”
Yu Zhuo frowned.
While still pondering, Yang Xinyuan’s message came again: “My wife said that this girl is close friends with the school beauty Xue Manqing; she’s part of their group of rich and beautiful girls. But her family seems pretty ordinary, I don’t know how she got along with those rich kids.”
Even though Yu Zhuo had just entered Haiyi High School, he had heard the gossip about Xue Manqing’s unsuccessful pursuit of Ji Rang. Damn, after all this, it still comes down to Ji Rang.
He knew that getting involved with Ji Rang was never a good thing.
No, he had to make his sister understand that this guy was no good, and make sure his sister stayed far away from Ji Rang from now on! Seeing is believing, he had to find a chance to let her see Ji Rang’s true colors!
Comrade Yu Zhuo returned home with a heavy face. As soon as he entered, he smelled the aroma of food coming from the kitchen.
His face lit up with joy, and he immediately forgot his earlier worries, rushing to the kitchen: “Mom! Did you get the money back? When are we going to buy a computer?”
Wu Yinghua: “No.”
Yu Zhuo: “?”
Is there no law anymore?
He angrily said, “Call your classmate out here, I’ll talk to her! It’s clearly stated in the contract that you can get a full refund during the cooling-off period, she can’t renege!”
Wu Yinghua wiped her hands on her apron, “Oh, don’t worry, Mom’s got something to show you.” She went into the bedroom, took out a document, and came out with a mysterious smile, “Take a look at this.”
Yu Zhuo glanced at it.
XX Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance.
Yu Zhuo: “?”
Wu Yinghua: “I talked to Guizhi for a long time today, and we misunderstood her. Disability actually falls under the category of critical illness, not covered by accident insurance. She recommended this critical illness insurance to me, it covers all illnesses, big and small, it’s very comprehensive! Now there’s nothing overlooked, from cancer and disability to cat scratches and dog bites, it fully protects your personal health!”
Yu Zhuo: “…………So, not only did you not get your money back, you also bought another one?”
