In comparison, the Jinyun clan[1], which later declined and was eventually lost to time, seemed rather tragic.

They attempted to create a second God of War, but instead created a gluttonous beast devoid of reason and driven only by hunger, thus benefiting others instead.

Gonggong hesitated for a moment, but refrained from immediately taking action to deal with Ya Zi.

Let’s wait until Chi You and Taotie have determined a victor before making any further moves.

The battle was nearing its end. Although Chi You was powerful, he was ultimately just an imposter. After many fierce battles, Taotie seemed to have seen through Chi You’s weakness. So it suddenly leaped up and bit off Chi You’s neck.

The enormous head crashed to the ground, and before the body could even fall, it was already being devoured whole by the ravenous glutton.

Ya Zi watched from the side, swallowing hard, not out of greed, but out of panic.

He felt that something was off about Jiang Lan.

He took two steps forward and tentatively spoke to Jiang Lan in an unprecedentedly calm voice, “Everyone who sees it gets a share. You can’t keep it all to yourself, can you?”

As a result, Jiang Lan looked up and stopped him from doing anything further with a low, warning growl.

His eyes were very fierce.

Ya Zi felt that the way he looked at him was no different from how he looked at the meat in his mouth. He cautiously took two steps back and tentatively called out to him again, but received no response.

Jiang Lan ate without even looking up.

Gonggong watched from the shadows, a hint of excitement showing on his usually impassive face as he kept a close eye on Taotie’s movements.

Chi You, Taotie, Jiang Chi.

Each of these three was incredibly powerful, but none of them could break through the barrier of heaven and earth on their own.

Only if the true warlord Chi You were resurrected would he possess this power.

But Chi You was already dead beyond any doubt, and his only remaining head was of no use. So, he had no choice but to use the connection between the three to come up with this method.

The Taotie was originally a ferocious beast born from the resentment of Chi You, which the Jinyun clan nurtured by placing it inside the bellies of their people and then using the powerful bloodline of the dragon race. The Jinyun clan’s original intention was to create a war god to serve them. However, while the Taotie was indeed powerful, it lacked intelligence and acted solely on instinct.

Therefore, the Jinyun clan had no choice but to give up on him.

After leaving his mother tribe, Taotie wandered aimlessly. Born from the resentment of Chi You, he was inherently ferocious and acted solely on instinct. Later, he unfortunately encountered the Yellow Emperor, who sealed and suppressed him with the Xuanyuan Sword. Over a thousand years, the Xuanyuan Sword and the formation stripped away the most ferocious resentment from Taotie. This most ferocious resentment separated from Taotie later became Jiang Chi.

Gonggong accidentally discovered the location where Taotie was sealed when he collided with Buzhou Mountain and feigned a westward retreat. Later, as the spiritual energy in the lower realm gradually thinned due to the separation of heaven and earth, he searched for a way to break through the barrier between heaven and earth. He thought of Taotie, but when he went to look for him again, he found that Taotie had already left, leaving only the broken Xuanyuan Sword and a mass of fierce resentment at the sealing site.

At that time, he guessed that the Yellow Emperor had long seen through Taotie’s unusual nature, which was why he specially sealed him with the Xuanyuan Sword to remove his resentment.

Later, he investigated Taotie’s whereabouts and learned that he had been found by the Dragon Palace and rarely appeared in public afterward. He only vaguely heard that Taotie was staying peacefully in the Dragon Palace, so he was almost certain that his guess was correct. If Taotie were in a ferocious state, even the Dragon Palace would not be able to imprison him.

He carefully collected the fierce and resentful energy along with the broken Xuanyuan Sword. After many years of investigation and searching, he finally found Chi You’s true burial place and his head, which gave rise to this idea.

—By raising Chi You’s head, Taotie, and that ferocious aura together, we can maximize their ferocity and make them devour each other, like raising a poisonous insect. The one that remains afterward will surely be the strongest, closest to the true power of Chi You, having integrated the three elements.

Then he only needed to find a suitable container to refine it and offer it as a sacrifice to the heavens. With the ferocity and power of the “Gu King[2],” and with his assistance, he will surely be able to break through the barriers of heaven and earth in one fell swoop and fulfill his long-cherished wish.

He had spent countless hours and effort to get to where he was today.

Gonggong watched with satisfaction as Taotie devoured Chi You’s head as well, and his obvious external wounds began to heal rapidly.

He touched the Nine Cauldrons in his sleeve, waiting for Taotie to devour Ya Zi, and then he would be done.

However, Taotie did not devour Ya Zi as he wished. He stared at Ya Zi for a long time with his scarlet eyes before turning and leaving.

Ya Zi, who had been standing frozen in place, relaxed slightly and immediately ran in the opposite direction.

Instead, Taotie took a few steps, then hesitated and stopped. After looking around for a while, it hesitated and headed north.

Gonggong’s expression darkened slightly. He put the Nine Cauldrons back into his sleeve and muttered to himself, “This shouldn’t be…”

After devouring the heads of Jiang Chi and Chi You, which were manifestations of ferocious energy, Taotie was at its strongest, and its ferocious nature was at its most unleashed. Taotie was born capable of devouring everything; it was constantly hungry, and greed was ingrained in its very bones.

With its ferocity fully unleashed, Taotie had no reason to let Ya Zi go.

Unless something had gone wrong in the middle.

Gonggong pondered for a long time with a gloomy expression. Then, with a flick of his snake tail, he went to the place where Jiang Chi and Chi You had fought. When he arrived, there was only ruins and a large bloodstain on the ground. Jiang Chi was nowhere to be found.

He had been here when he first entered the small world. He thought Jiang Chi had been devoured by the Taotie and his body was gone. But he never thought that there was another possibility: Jiang Chi was not devoured by the Taotie.

His expression shifted constantly, and after a long while, he finally followed the trail— he wanted to confirm Jiang Chi’s fate.
