That night, You Xu was as excited as if she’d taken a stimulant, stroking the fox fur with such high spirits that she couldn’t sleep.

She petted the big fox from head to toe, discovering that Shen Jue’s most sensitive spot was his ears. Whenever she touched them, half his body would stiffen— a persistent, unchanging stiffness that never failed her.

You Xu arched her back, bringing her close to his fox ear, and deliberately whispered, “Big Fox.”

His ears twitched, and You Xu felt a tickle in her heart. She reached out and touched them again, the soft, fluffy fox ears brushing against her palm. She couldn’t resist lowering her head and kissing them, the fine fur brushing against her lips.

You Xu licked her lips and coaxed him, “Say something to me, okay?” At these moments, Shen Jue’s deep, husky voice was especially alluring.

She longed to hear it, even though she now knew she looked like a thug harassing a virgin.

Shen Jue turned his head to the side, grabbed her wrist, and said in a low, hoarse voice, “Get some rest, or you’ll have a headache again tomorrow.”

You Xu’s eardrums were rubbed, and her heart raced. She persisted, “Don’t rest, I’m not afraid of headaches.”

Shen Jue had no choice but to negotiate with her, “Touch me again tomorrow.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll listen to you.” Seeing Shen Jue give in again, You Xu immediately agreed, but her hands didn’t stop moving.

Shen Jue wrapped her up with his big tail and covered her mouth.

“Mmm mmm mmm.” You Xu writhed like a worm a few times, and seeing that it was no use, she looked at Shen Jue with pitiful eyes.

Shen Jue raised his paw to cover her eyes.

He withdrew his sharp claws, leaving only her warm and soft paw pads. You Xu didn’t miss any opportunity to tease him, blinking her eyes hard, her eyelashes brushing against his paw pads like small fans.

Repeating the same monotonous, mechanical movements, You Xu soon grew sleepy. A wave of drowsiness overwhelmed her, and she finally drifted off to sleep.

Sensing the silence that had lasted for a while, her breathing slow and even, Shen Jue withdrew his hand, releasing her from his tail.

He lay down beside her, quietly watching her, observing her serene face, listening to her steady breathing. In this night, he felt an extraordinary peace. A familiar warmth filled him, as if he had been watching her like this for many years.

As if he had silently watched her sleeping face in countless late nights.

It made him subconsciously reluctant to close his eyes.

….

When something was on her mind, she tended to wake up early. Having transmigrated to this world, this was the first time You Xu had woken up before dawn; her eyelids hadn’t even opened before her hand reached out.

“Waking up so early,” she heard Shen Jue ask, “Are you feeling unwell?”

Whether Shen Jue was uncomfortable lying down with her or worried about her petting him, she wondered why he’d woken up so early too. You Xu composed herself for a moment, then opened her eyes and weakly said, “My head hurts a little.”

Shen Jue: “I’ll call the doctor.”

“I think distraction is the most important thing,” You Xu said, stroking his tail, “like this.”

Shen Jue glanced at her but didn’t say anything more.

Receiving his silent acquiescence, You Xu smiled and petted him. Unlike her playful and irreverent behavior last night, this time she petted her fox master very seriously.

First, she stroked his tail, then his back, following the direction of the fur with gentle pressure, then his head and neck, avoiding his sensitive ears.

Every now and then, You Xu acted like a hairdresser, asking him, “How’s the pressure?”

But clearly, her customer wasn’t keen on interacting with her. Fortunately, she could sense his comfort from his narrowed fox eyes and relaxed state.

Both were willing to pet and be petted, a very harmonious activity that everyone was happy about, so much so that they played until the sun was high in the sky, when a subordinate reminded You Xu outside the door to have her meal.

Shen Jue had given the order that You Xu’s three meals a day should be more, not less, and she would usually serve the meals herself, but seeing that she hadn’t made a move for so long today, the subordinate was afraid that Shen Jue would blame her, so the subordinate had no choice but to come and remind her.

Shen Jue transformed back into human form and gestured for her to have her meal. You Xu obediently got up, not bothering to ask him if she could continue after she finished eating. With a proud and aloof fox, asking wouldn’t get you any answers, so she just started touching him.

Shen Jue leaned lazily against the bedside, his eyes lowered as he saw a few snow-white fox fur strands on You Xu’s slightly disheveled black hair, and his mood inexplicably improved. He took the initiative to ask, “Why do you like touching my fur so much?”

You Xu looked up at him and said matter-of-factly, “It’s human nature.”

Shen Jue remained noncommittal.

You Xu subconsciously raised her hand to smooth her hair, suddenly realizing what he subconsciously wanted to ask, so she said, “You want to ask me why my petting skills are so good?”

Shen Jue raised an eyebrow and looked at her.

“Well,” You Xu scratched her head, “because I’ve petted someone before.”

Shen Jue: “?!”

You Xu smiled, “I used to pet my big dog, and it was so happy it ran around like crazy.”

“…”

She couldn’t help but add, “Just like you.”

Shen Jue: “…………”

….

You Xu knew that Shen Jue often went out to cause trouble, but since he didn’t say anything, she didn’t bring it up either.

After monitoring his darkening value until it dropped to 40 and his trust value reached 70, You Xu understood a little. He needed to avenge his people for his darkening value to decrease to a certain extent, so she felt even more reluctant to say anything.

As her body recovered better, Shen Jue relaxed the restrictions on her. She no longer had to be confined to the Huage Pavilion and could wander around the palace freely, but once she left the palace, a demon had to follow her.

While Shen Jue was out causing trouble again, You Xu, seeing the bright sunshine, wanted to take a stroll, but she had no desire to wander around the palace. Instead, she thought of the farmland to the north of the palace. You Xu wandered over, followed by a dozen or so demons, but she didn’t care much. She looked at the vegetables, touched the sheep, and walked to an area where chickens and ducks were penned up. The roosters were pecking at each other, and the hens were incubating their eggs.

Nothing new, You Xu glanced at it and was about to leave when she noticed a green egg in the corner, like a piece of jade.

Just as You Xu was about to go over and take it, a demon swiftly brought it over and held it in front of her.

The egg was the size of a human head. You Xu picked it up and felt its weight; it was probably as heavy as a solid ball. Perhaps because this large egg stood out so much in the chicken coop, no hen was willing to incubate it.

It looked quite nice, with a slightly frosted texture. Intrigued, You Xu asked the surrounding demons, “What kind of egg is this?”

A group of demons gathered around, examining the egg closely, chattering, “If you ask me, it might be a green snake’s egg.”

Hearing the word “snake,” You Xu’s hands trembled as she held the egg; she was terrified of snakes.

“Nonsense, green snake eggs have white shells, I’ve seen them.”

“I think, given its size, it might be a bluebird.”

A large bluebird? You Xu’s eyes lit up. She carefully cleaned it like she’d found a treasure, then carried it back to the pavilion.

For the egg to hatch, it needed a certain temperature. You Xu curled the blanket into a small nest, heated a hand warmer, placed it inside, and then put the egg in. After warming it for a while, she realized that uneven heating might not be good for the development of the little creature inside. She rested her chin on her hand, lost in thought.

….

Shen Jue returned home that night and first checked on You Xu. Seeing that the light was off in her room, he silently went in, tucked her in, and then left to sleep in the next room.

Not long after he lay down, there was a noise at the door, and someone tiptoed in.

Shen Jue knew it was You Xu without opening his eyes, so assuming she wanted to pet him, even before she lifted the curtain, he transformed into his fox form.

Only after You Xu carefully climbed into bed and lay down beside him did Shen Jue open his eyes, tuck her in, and watch her for a while before closing his eyes again.

The next day, sunlight streamed into the room, reflecting a soft glow on the white jade floor.

Shen Jue opened his eyes and noticed something was amiss. Specifically, there was something hard under his bottom, its shape not quite like the hand warmer You Xu usually used.

He reached down and pulled out… a bluish-green egg.

After a while, You Xu woke up and saw that Shen Jue had returned to human form, holding an egg in one hand and looking at her with an inscrutable expression.

“Oh, you’re awake.” You Xu smiled, took the egg from his hand, and tucked it into her bosom like a treasure. She measured the egg with her arm and found that it was a bit big, so she exclaimed, “Wow, a fox’s butt is still warmer and heats up more evenly.”

Shen Jue’s forehead twitched, and his face instantly darkened. He asked her incredulously, “You want me to incubate the egg?!”

It was as if he could strangle her on the spot if she said yes.

“Ah,” but You Xu was still fearless, “Otherwise, why would I have come over to sleep last night and put the green egg under your butt?”

Shen Jue: “…”

You Xu smiled and her eyes crinkled: “You’re both demons, be more tolerant and show some love.”

Shen Jue gritted his teeth, squeezing out each word from between his teeth: “Foxes don’t lay eggs.” The implication was that foxes don’t incubate eggs either.

“You’re doing a great job hatching it too,” You Xu comforted him with a pep talk, “A fox needs to have confidence.”

Shen Jue: “…………”

The author has something to say:

The first fox in the history of the fox clan to hatch an egg— Shen Jue.

Shen Jue: “If it weren’t for international custom that the female lead can’t be killed, I would have already…”

You Xu: “Okay, I understand.”

Shen Jue: “?”

And so Shen Jue lived a happy life of being chased around and having an egg hatched.
