Armed guards stood outside the ward. After confirming Liang Jing and Li Yuebai’s identities, they allowed them to pass.
The ward’s furnishings resembled a hospital’s intensive care unit. Computers and various instruments emitted soft beeping sounds, and screens displayed various red and green lines and numbers.
In the center of the ward, on the bed, Weng Zichen lay quietly in his pajamas, seemingly unconscious. Faint traces of scales still lingered on his skin, and an IV tube was inserted into his arm. The entire bed was covered by a transparent plexiglass dome to prevent the patient from suddenly attacking.
Li Yuebai followed Liang Jing into the ward, quietly turned around and closed the door, then simply stood by the door without taking a step forward.
He didn’t want to be treated like an animal, so walking up to examine Weng Zichen from head to toe— that would be far too offensive.
Liang Jing walked to the glass dome, tapped it, and whispered, “Wake up.”
There was a communication device on both sides, so they could hear each other.
From Li Yuebai’s perspective, Liang Jing’s expression, actions, and voice were all extremely awkward.
Anyone would feel awkward in this situation.
They were a bitterly aggrieved divorcing couple, and now their relationship had deteriorated to this state. Liang Jing, with her cold, stubborn, and strong-willed personality, wasn’t used to caring for patients, but she couldn’t treat her ex-husband like a lab animal, so she had always been awkward.
The man on the bed opened his eyes— still those terrifying, snake-like pupils— his gaze filled with anger, and he even let out a cold snort.
From an observer’s perspective, their relationship actually seemed to have eased considerably.
“I made you some new soup,” Liang Jing said awkwardly, holding up the flask in her hand. “Would you like some?”
Her tone was like that of an ordinary couple.
In fact, Liang Jing’s usual tone was: “This is the latest alternative drug, HGX78423. I hope you’ll try it to better facilitate further research.”
Li Yuebai had just casually suggested she use a more humane approach, and to his surprise, she actually adopted it.
Weng Zichen sat up from the hospital bed, glancing at the glass flask in Liang Jing’s hand through the plexiglass dome. He showed a look of disgust. Vampires only craved human blood, so he naturally had no interest in such an alternative. However, he also longed to get rid of this desire as soon as possible, so he ultimately gave a cold laugh and nodded.
“I’ll transfer it over. Don’t forget to drink it.” Liang Jing breathed a sigh of relief, her voice becoming much gentler. She placed the flask at a small tube opening and pressed a button. The inside and outside of the glass dome were isolated; for safety, the substance could only be transferred into the dome through a tube.
Li Yuebai stood by the door, looking at the black liquid in the flask from afar, feeling a wave of nausea.
He was probably too tired and stressed. But ever since returning from the museum, he had felt unwell. In fact, he had sustained several wounds during the earthquake, but he hadn’t had the energy to treat or bandage them. Now, nausea and dizziness were overwhelming him.
Weng Zichen took the flask from the other end of the pipe but didn’t drink immediately. He simply looked up, his strangely shaped pupils in his golden eyes suddenly narrowing as he looked towards the door— he saw Li Yuebai’s figure.
“Who? Liang Jing, who’s that?” Weng Zichen roared fiercely, “Did you bring someone else?”
“Don’t get agitated!” Liang Jing quickly retorted, seeing that he was about to start another argument, “It’s Gu Xisha, he’s here to help you.”
“Gu Xisha?” Weng Zichen looked over suspiciously. Li Yuebai was standing a bit far away, so he couldn’t see him clearly.
“It’s me.” Li Yuebai had no choice but to step forward, “Mr. Weng, it’s been a long time.”
Saying this was really embarrassing. From a polite standpoint, one should at least ask, “How are you?” However, Weng Zichen’s condition was clearly very bad, and Li Yuebai didn’t know what to say. He could only approach the glass dome step by step and politely nod to Weng Zichen.
Unexpectedly, Weng Zichen changed completely the moment he saw him.
He had already received so many days of calming treatment, and his mental and physical condition was relatively peaceful, and the danger level had already decreased significantly. However, upon seeing Li Yuebai, he immediately entered a manic state.
With a forceful swing of his arm, the flask was smashed to the ground, glass shards flying everywhere, and black liquid splattered all over the floor.
Immediately afterwards, a ferocious, lustful expression appeared on Weng Zichen’s face, his teeth grinding together, and he charged towards Li Yuebai. Fortunately, the glass dome stopped him. Weng Zichen rushed to the glass dome, desperately scratching and pushing, but to no avail. The glass dome rattled as he pushed it but remained unmoved.
“Gu Xisha, you come here…come here!” Weng Zichen gritted his teeth fiercely, making various dangerous gestures at Li Yuebai.
“You, you mustn’t be impulsive!” Liang Jing had never seen Weng Zichen so out of control in recent days: “Why…don’t do this, I’ll let him out!”
“No, you make him come here!” In Weng Zichen’s expression, besides madness and anger, there was also…desire, as if he wanted to grab Li Yuebai immediately, tear him to pieces, and devour him…
Li Yuebai frowned, not understanding what nerve he had touched again.
Perhaps it was because he had broken the illusion created by Weng Zichen last time, so Weng Zichen’s anger hadn’t subsided?
In any case, he couldn’t continue to provoke him.
Li Yuebai nodded to Liang Jing, then turned around and quietly retreated.
Back in the corridor, he greeted the guard and waited for Liang Jing to come out.
Unexpectedly, a few minutes later, the walkie-talkie rang. It was Ye Qing’s walkie-talkie, which Li Yuebai always carried with him.
He answered the call, and sure enough, it was a video call from Director Yang.
“Hello, hello, Xiao Gu? Why are you still holding Ye Qing’s walkie-talkie? Where’s Ye Qing? Have you found him?” Director Yang looked frantic and impatient, his voice louder than usual.
“Sorry, I haven’t found him.” Li Yuebai felt a heavy weight in his heart at the thought of Ye Qing: “I took his walkie-talkie after the earthquake, and I haven’t been able to find him. Of course, the walkie-talkie is still with me.”
“Do you have any clues about his whereabouts?” Director Yang pressed.
Li Yuebai thought of the dusty underground parking lot and the blood-stained teddy bear. After hesitating for a long time, he gritted his teeth and said, “No, no clues.”
“I’ll show you a surveillance video; help me deduce what’s going on.” Without another word, Director Yang sent Li Yuebai the video.
The video showed the familiar underground parking lot, and the time was over two hours earlier.
Ye Qing appeared in the video. He was driving away from the underground parking lot, but he was only using one hand to drive— the other hand was holding a little girl in his arms. Her face was obscured, but her soft, petite body and pink dress were visible. The little girl was motionless, her body covered in dark red and black blood, looking utterly disgusting in the blurry video.
Ye Qing…
Li Yuebai desperately suppressed the urge to vomit, his mind already a jumbled mess.
When he heard the cries for help on the phone, when he found the blood-stained teddy bear, he had considered this possibility, but he still clung to a sliver of hope that no murder had occurred. Now… even that sliver of hope was gone…
“We just received a report from a man in the community that his daughter is missing. We went over and checked the surveillance footage, and that’s when we found this.” Director Yang’s tone was extremely serious: “Ye Qing is a subordinate I trust very much, but after leaving the team without permission, he dared to do such an incomprehensible thing. He is suspected of a crime and must be thoroughly investigated!”
“I…” Li Yuebai, who always prided himself on his high intelligence in times of crisis, truly didn’t know what to say this time: “I…”
“What exactly happened, Xiao Gu? Can you provide more clues? Why are you always so secretive!” Director Yang roared: “Xiao Ye is usually a reliable person, how did he suddenly become a suspect in a child kidnapping? What have you done?!”
It’s my fault, all my fault.
Li Yuebai closed his eyes, letting cold sweat trickle down his spine.
He didn’t know how he hung up the walkie-talkie, only that Director Yang had dispatched a large team to track down Ye Qing and the girl. It was a matter of life and death, and they couldn’t afford to be negligent.
However, Li Yuebai was already in despair. Based on his judgment, the little girl was probably doomed.
He remembered clearly that the moment Ye Qing became a vampire, he immediately suppressed him, attempting to suck his blood. That power, that ferocity— he might be able to resist, but that delicate, young girl… she absolutely couldn’t last a minute.
He could come up with all sorts of ways to deal with enemies and villains, but this time, his opponent was Ye Qing… Facing Ye Qing, Li Yuebai felt utterly helpless, utterly desperate.
Just then, Liang Jing came out of the ward.
“You look so pale? What’s wrong?” Liang Jing looked at Li Yuebai’s terrible complexion with concern and led him into the laboratory.
As soon as they entered the laboratory, Li Yuebai sat down directly on the floor; he didn’t even have the strength to stand.
“Xiao Gu, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve just killed someone.” Liang Jing sighed, poured him a glass of warm water, but he didn’t take it.
“Nothing.” Li Yuebai wearily rubbed his forehead. “How’s the human blood substitute?”
At this point, the substitute had become his biggest lifeline; only that could save Ye Qing from the brink of demonization.
But just now, the bottle of black liquid had been smashed by Weng Zichen.
“Not good enough, still not good enough.” Liang Jing also frowned. “I just calmed Weng Zichen down. Although the bottle is broken and undrinkable, the liquid was spilled all over the floor, and you can still smell it… No, judging from his reaction, the substitute still doesn’t have the allure of human blood.”
“…” Li Yuebai nodded. He should understand that scientific progress was always a long process. Liang Jing wasn’t a god; she couldn’t produce a magic pill all at once.
“There’s something I also need to tell you.” Liang Jing thought for a moment and said, “I just asked Weng Zichen why he was so agitated after seeing you, and whether he resented you. He said…”
“?” At this crucial moment, Li Yuebai didn’t really care whether Weng Zichen hated him or not.
“He said he didn’t hate you.” Liang Jing’s expression was also very confused. “As soon as you walked out, he immediately calmed down. He said… your existence drove him crazy.”
“Me…?”
“Weng Zichen said that he just heard your voice and saw your appearance, and a strong… urge to eat you welled up inside him.” Liang Jing wasn’t joking at all, emphasizing each word: “Yes, he said he wanted to eat you.”
