“Madam, the servants of Governor Li’s household have come to our house.”

“What?” Madam Huo nearly dropped her cup, leaping up from her armchair.

Had she heard correctly? Who had come to their door?

“It really is Madam!” Mama Hu said hurriedly. “They came knocking on the door saying they want to settle scores with our Miss Yu.”

Madam Huo’s face darkened. “Which Miss Yu?”

Mama Hu curled her lip. “Who else could it be? Isn’t Miss Linlang the most troublesome one in the manor?”

Madam Huo’s chest heaved with anger. “What are you all standing there for? Why don’t you call that rebellious girl out?”

“She’s only been back in the manor for a few days, and she’s causing trouble every single day. Not a single day of peace!”

“Not a single day of peace.” Yu Linlang also complained as she walked towards the main gate of the governor’s manor. “It’s better to be leisurely at the estate. We agreed to come back to the manor to retire and rest, but there’s always something going on. There’s something about the governor’s manor everywhere.”

Jiu Jin followed behind her young lady, nodding repeatedly and complaining to the point of exhaustion. “In other people’s official residences, the young ladies can raise fish and plant flowers every day and have a very leisurely time. But the governor’s manor is so busy.”

“It’s always something, this or that. Every death gets my young lady questioned. What good can you possibly get out of them? Who died today? She can’t sleep or eat properly since she came back, all she does is watch your dead bodies all day!”

“No family has as many problems as your Prefectural Governor’s Mansion! Death after death every day, you don’t get tired of it, but my young lady is incredibly annoyed!”

“When we go back to the estate tomorrow, if people ask how the Prefectural Governor’s Mansion is, how will we answer? All we see are dead bodies, how can it be good or bad!”

The head maid of the Huo family’s courtyard, leading the way, couldn’t help but twitch her eyebrows at these words. These two, mistress and servant, were either completely silent, with stern, impersonal faces that seemed to owe everyone money, or they were always talking and whining, enough to drive anyone crazy!

It was infuriating! Luckily, the First Madam wasn’t here, or she would have fainted from anger upon hearing this.

The head maid led the two to the door, where a gatekeeper rushed forward. “Good sister, why didn’t you call more people? We really can’t hold on any longer.”

“Miss Yu, Madam has already said that you should resolve this matter yourself.”

“Outside is the wife of Governor Li. I don’t know how you offended her. Logically speaking, the drowning of the Governor’s Third Miss at home has nothing to do with you, but now Madam Li has come to your door in person. You’d better handle it yourself.”

“Madam hopes that before Master returns home, you can settle this matter by kneeling or begging, but please don’t implicate our household.”

“Oh, I didn’t expect your mistress to intervene anyway. Let her continue to cower. She’s used to kneeling before the Governor’s wife. When she comes out, all she does is cry and kneel. What can we expect?” Yu Linlang pulled out a soft knife and stabbed back fiercely. Her emotions were unusually calm, but her words were extremely harsh.

The head maid turned pale.

Jiu Jin sneered, “Just stay put, get out of the way, you’re in the way.”

These people from the governor’s mansion are all an eyesore, completely unsuitable for their young lady’s retirement.

The emperor is far away, where can’t they go after leaving the governor’s mansion!

If their young lady hadn’t been so shrewd and planned ahead, why would she have returned?

“Open the door,” Yu Linlang said impatiently.

What kind of third young lady does this governor’s mansion have? If Jiu Jin hadn’t reminded her, she would have completely forgotten that she had met this Miss Li on her way back.

As the door slowly opened, a cup flew straight towards Yu Linlang’s head.

Yu Linlang stood in the center of the courtyard, a hint of anger flashing across her face.

These officials’ wives, she wondered who had spoiled them with such bad habits, always throwing cups at people.

Without any explanation, they’d just smash something in someone’s face. They were truly spoiled rotten!

Jiu Jin leaped forward, catching the flying cup and hurling it back at Madam Li’s feet.

The porcelain shattered violently, the flying fragments startling the governor’s wife.

The onlookers in front of the governor’s mansion were all stunned, even the air seemed to fall silent.

“Madam, you come from a distinguished family, can’t you speak properly? Why act like a shrew, coming here to hurl insults and attack? Don’t you realize you’ve lowered your status?” Yu Linlang said expressionlessly.

“You!” Madam Li’s face flushed red, her eyes bloodshot as she stared intently at the tall, slender young woman before her.

“Such a silver tongue at such a young age, yet cold-hearted and venomous as a snake. If it weren’t for you, why would my third daughter have drowned in the back garden?”

Yu Linlang’s face was ashen, her voice tinged with cold indifference. “Madam Li, I sympathize with your daughter’s unexpected death, but don’t just throw your weight around on anyone! Illnesses need timely treatment; don’t miss the best window for intervention.”

“You, how dare you say that!” Madam Li’s eyes were bloodshot with rage as she pointed at her, her hand trembling. “The servants all told me that if you hadn’t treated my third daughter so haphazardly, how could she have gotten so sick that she ran off to the back garden in the dead of winter and drowned?”

Yu Linlang raised an eyebrow. “This official’s daughter did indeed travel back to Weizhou Prefecture with your daughter. During that time, your daughter abandoned the carriage and caught a cold, and your servants asked me to examine her.”

Madam Li roared, “So you’re admitting it?”

“What’s wrong with admitting it? This official’s daughter is upright and honest. When your family asked me to take her pulse and examine her, I explained the situation in detail.”

“As I said, my medical skills are quite ordinary, not comparable to those old doctors who have been practicing for decades. Therefore, I only examined her, took her pulse, and told your servant to cover her with two more quilts and get her back to the city as soon as possible.”

“Your daughter’s cold wasn’t serious to begin with. If she was healthy, she could have recovered by sweating it out. At worst, she could have gotten a couple of doses of Guizhi Tang from the pharmacy after returning to the city, and she would have been almost better. How could I have known that after five or six days, her condition would have worsened?”

“I didn’t prescribe any medicine, didn’t do any acupuncture, so why am I being implicated in her accidental drowning in the backyard? Madam Li, is your family perhaps surnamed Lai[1]? This matter is too bizarre and ridiculous; it doesn’t make any sense anywhere.”

The onlookers, listening to her clear and concise summary of the whole story, nodded and whispered among themselves, “It certainly doesn’t make sense.”

“Has this Madam Li gone mad with grief over her daughter’s death?”

“The Governor’s daughter is so wronged! She was just kindly examining someone and taking their pulse, how did she get involved in a murder case?”

“Speaking of which, the Governor’s residence is acting strangely. The Governor’s wife came knocking and causing trouble, why did they send out a young girl to deal with her? Where is the Governor’s wife?”

The head maid in the Huo family’s courtyard turned pale, then flushed, and hurriedly ran towards Yuchun Garden.

This Miss Linlang has such a sharp tongue; a few words from her rendered the Governor’s wife speechless. This matter must be brought to the attention of the First Madam!

[1] Lai Junchen was a notorious secret police official during the Tang and Wu Zhou dynasties (late 7th century AD). He was infamous for using torture and fabricating evidence to falsely accuse numerous officials of crimes. He even co-authored a guide called the Classic of Accusation on how to frame people effectively. Eventually, he was accused of plotting against the imperial family and was executed, a moment reportedly celebrated by the populace. This figure represents historical instances of unjust accusations and the abuse of power within Chinese history, with the “Lai” name associated with the act of false charges.
