“Genta-sama!!”

The town of Mean began to be dyed red. That person was there. The receptionist at the Adventurer’s Guild, the elf Sylphy.

Najina and Wozma, who had finished eating their bread, looked on, wondering what was going on.

“Sh, Sylphy-san, what’s wrong?!”

Was it about the bread delivery? As mentioned earlier, Maon-san’s house will be contacted whether I was selected or not. However, if I was selected, I would need permission from the guild.

Normally, it took a lot of time for the top management to make a decision on something like this, but it was amazing that the decision was made in such a short amount of time…

Perhaps the bread was deemed “insignificant and rejected”…?

“Genta…”

Perhaps my anxiety was showing in my expression and voice… Maon came over to my side, looking worried.

The other day, it seemed like the darkness had deepened a little, even though it had only been for a short time. And so, my sense of unease grew stronger. It reminded me of the loneliness I felt as a child, when it was getting dark and I hadn’t made it home yet.

Then, Sylphy appeared right in front of me. No matter what the outcome… I couldn’t run away, so I made up my mind.

Yes or no… no matter what the outcome… But it was Sylphy who came to tell me the result… That’s how it is… I thought and waited for the beautiful woman in front of me to speak. Without looking away…

Even in the dim light, her beauty remained unchanged. Even if she were to tell me something despairing… I’m sure I would accept it without a second thought… I found myself thinking about such things.

“Genta-sama, Maon-sama. I’ve come to inform you of the Mean Adventurer’s Guild’s decision regarding the delivery of bread.”

It’s here! It’s here!

“Yes.”

“Genta…”

I took Maon’s hand as she muttered anxiously. On the first day I came to this world, I had many conversations with Maon, and we had also experienced some painful experiences together.

I talked to a lot of different people, including some unpleasant ones. But without Maon, I wouldn’t have had all these experiences.

I opened the closet and came all the way… If I had stayed in Japan instead of coming to this world in the first place… With the coronavirus pandemic and my limited money, I probably wouldn’t have gone out at all. I’m sure I’d spend every day not talking to anyone from now on… Days like that would only continue.

So I took Maon’s hand, and for one day we shared joys and sorrows. We were people with whom I had no connection, and we even lived in different worlds… But whether I laughed or cried, it was all together with Maon, or so I thought.

“Genta-sama, the Mean Adventurer’s Guild would like to officially request that you deliver bread. Please register as an adventurer.”

“Y-yesssssssss!!”

I clasped Maon’s hand in both of my hands and held it. I never knew being recognized would make me feel this happy!

“Maon! I did it!”

Maon also nodded with a smile.

“It’s that delicious. Well… that’s what happens.”

“Yeah, I was sure of that too.”

Najina and the others seemed to have had no doubt that we would be hired.

“Also, this is just my personal opinion…”

Sylphy-san called out to me in a low voice.

“That bread was amazing. It’s amazing bread that will surely bring a smile to anyone’s face. But sometimes, adventurers have the risk of losing their lives. What survived yesterday doesn’t mean it will continue tomorrow… It’s natural that they will end up living a brutal life.”

After saying that, she muttered, “But…” and continued after a pause.

“While eating this bread, I’m sure anyone will find themselves smiling naturally as they experience its flavor and softness. Adventurers lose so much, like the things they get angry and cry about, but for this moment, it’s not just about surviving. It’s like they can regain their heart, cry and laugh again, and return to their true selves…it’s like this bread can remind them of those human emotions.”

She said that and smiled at me.

….

“So, does that mean I can buy my brother’s bread at the guild?”

To Najina’s question, Sylphy replied, “Yes.” Wozma smiled and said, “That’s fun.”

“When will you be delivering to the guild, Genta-sama?”

Hmm, we can deliver it starting tomorrow… so maybe it’s better to do it sooner…

“Then, starting tomorrow.”

“!?”

Sylphy-san’s eyes widened.

“Th-This much bread…?!”

“Y-Yes.”

That’s what I did.

Sylphy-san looked at me with an incredulous expression. But is it really that hard? For me, all I have to do is go shopping at the supermarket and bring it over…

“By the way, when would be a good time for delivery?”

Sylphy straightened up in response to my question.

“It’s probably a little before sunrise… around that time people start gathering to take on requests.”

It seems that the concept of time in this world is quite vague.

Daytime was from sunrise to sunset, and night is from sunset to sunrise. It was getting quite dark, but the sun hadn’t set yet, so it was still just barely daytime. I glance at my watch and see that it’s just after five o’clock.

By the way, it was spring in the other world, just like in Japan.

In Japan, the length of day and night was the same on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. Now that we are just about ten days past the vernal equinox, the length of day and night will probably not be that different.

Well, I’ll try to come here around five tomorrow.

“But even so… starting tomorrow morning… to think you can prepare that much bread in just half a day… I can’t help but be amazed. Are you pushing yourself too hard?”

“I’m sorry to have worried you, but it’s okay. I still have a few more in my backpack…”

“Huh!?”

Sylphy, Najina, and Wozma all responded to my voice. Of all the others, Sylphy was the one who reacted the quickest.

“Genta-sama, if you don’t mind, could you please sell us that bread? I’m embarrassed to say this, but all three of us at the reception desk are in love with that bread…”

Sylphy offered timidly.

“Uh, uh, yes. I understand!”

“The price is… is it really okay if it’s five white copper coins each?”

“Yes.”

“Hey hey! Wait, wait! Big bro, five copper coins… are you serious?!”

“I appreciate that it’s cheap, but… Genta, won’t it end up costing you money?”

Najina and Wozma also voiced their concerns.

“I said I could find a buyer even if I bid more. I said I could get it for just one silver coin (equivalent to 10,000 yen in Japanese yen) from someone who had made a fortune in the merchant guild…”

“R-Right… that jam… No, not just the inside, but the bread itself… it’s pure white and soft, it’s like it’s alive.”

“Oh, that bread alone is quite something.”

For me, the sweet bread is now under 50 yen (excluding tax), so even selling it for five cupronickel coins (500 yen) would be a big profit…

“No, no. If there’s no place to sell it, there’s nothing I can do. The Merchants’ Guild might be keeping an eye on me in town…”

“What’s going on?” Najina asked, “No, don’t worry. By the way, what kind of bread would you like? We have…”

When I opened my backpack, there were six loaves of bread left.

“Six…”

In that case, if we simply divide it up, we’ll each get two… but Sylphy said that the other two receptionists also wanted bread…”

Six isn’t enough for this number of people… What should I do…?

“Hey, please wait a moment.”

Once again I ran to the barn, returned to my room via the closet, grabbed the grocery bag I’d bought the night before and ran off.

The four of them were still waiting for me. They laid out the bread on the blue tarp. There were 10 loaves of bread in the bag I had just brought. That makes a total of 16 loaves, so I think that should be enough.

“Well, then we’ll start selling.”
