The TV series playing on the tablet had reached its climax, and the loud arguments between the male and female leads sounded particularly jarring in the quiet hospital ward.
Lu Dangui patiently tried to reason with the man in the wheelchair: “Why don’t you turn the volume down? This is the inpatient ward, playing music out loud will disturb other people’s rest.”
“……”
The man’s fingertips curled slightly as he raised his pale fingers and turned down the tablet’s volume.
“Have you seen this?”
Staring at the tablet in front of him, the man in the wheelchair asked him a question.
“What?”
The man in the wheelchair succinctly stated: “Autumn in My Heart[1].”
Lu Dangui almost choked.
Wasn’t this a melodramatic romance drama that swept the globe several years ago? Are people still watching it now?
“I’ve seen a bit of it,” Lu Dangui answered truthfully. “My sister liked to watch it, but I think it’s pretty melodramatic.
For a while, Lu Wenfei was completely obsessed, crying while watching and insisting on dragging her brother along. This drama was all about love and hate, life and death, which was definitely not the style Lu Dangui could accept.
The man in the wheelchair nodded and didn’t say anything.
The lake rippled with silvery light, and the dim streetlights illuminated the inpatient ward. Lu Dangui and the man in the wheelchair sat on either side of the lake, one watching a Korean drama and the other scrolling through his phone, each doing their own thing and ignoring the other.
As dusk approached, Lu Dangui glanced at the time on his phone, calculating how much longer it would be before he had to get back to his shift. Suddenly, his phone vibrated, breaking the peaceful atmosphere by the lake.
Seeing that it was the director calling, Lu Dangui quickly pressed the answer button: “Director?”
“Yes, I’m still in the yard, I haven’t gone back yet—”
The director said on the phone that there was a medical seminar at S University tomorrow and asked him to prepare the PPT needed for the conference tonight and go there as an assistant tomorrow morning.
“Okay, I’ll prepare the materials and send them to you as soon as possible. Okay, no problem.”
After hanging up the phone with the director, Lu Dangui gripped his phone tightly and stared blankly at the shimmering lake for a long time. Then he slowly bent down and buried his face in his palms.
“Damn, this is so annoying…”
Having worked two consecutive night shifts, he was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally, but he still had to keep going. After all, there was another tough battle to fight after the night shift, and he probably wouldn’t be able to sleep until dawn.
Thinking that he would be busy later, Lu Dangui stood up from the bench and asked the man who had been engrossed in watching the drama, “I have something urgent to attend to and may have to leave first. Who is your nurse? I’ll call her and ask her to come pick you up ahead of time?”
The man in the wheelchair pressed the pause button and quietly looked at Lu Dangui through his sunglasses.
“Why are you annoyed?” the man in the wheelchair asked him.
Thinking about the task list given to him by the director, Lu Dangui casually replied, “It’s nothing, just too much to do.”
The man in the wheelchair said calmly, “Does having too much to do just get you annoyed?”
Lu Dangui grew increasingly impatient: “You have nothing of substance to do all day, just mundane tasks. Wouldn’t you get annoyed if you were in my shoes?”
“Are trivial matters annoying?”
The man in the wheelchair then asked.
Lu Dangui’s breath hitched; he almost laughed out of anger at the man.
Which ward was this person in? Was he out of his mind?
He was already busy enough with work, so why was he playing word games with a lunatic?
Taking out his phone to contact the nurses’ station to pick him up, Lu Dangui suddenly noticed the identification bracelet on the man’s wrist.
“Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, 03-01”.
Lu Dangui: “…”
He made a mistake.
This person was not a patient in their psychiatric department at all, so naturally they didn’t have to comply with the psychiatric department’s restrictions on accompanying people outside.
But why would someone choose to sit downstairs at the psychiatric ward and watch TV shows so late at night?
He was worried that something might happen to the person, so he sat there waiting for a long time, only to find that he had no luck.
Lu Dangui picked up the plastic bag containing the trash and stomped angrily toward the inpatient ward. But halfway there, as if suddenly remembering something, he turned around and went his own way.
Returning to the man in the wheelchair, Lu Dangui said irritably, “Since you’re from the rehabilitation department, didn’t your attending physician say that rehabilitation patients shouldn’t sit outdoors in the wind for extended periods?”
“I sneaked out,” the man in the wheelchair said after a few seconds of silence. “Keep it a secret. I’ll go back by myself later.”
“You still haven’t answered me. Are these trivial matters bothersome?”
Seeing Lu Dangui turn to leave, the man in the wheelchair repeated his question.
Lu Dangui stopped where he was and took a deep breath.
This guy was really determined to fight back!
“I’m asking you,” Lu Dangui said with a smirk, turning to glare at the man in the wheelchair, “if you studied medicine for five years and then did three years of internship, only to find out that you can’t do anything. You haven’t had a single patient for a month, and you can’t even see a case that you can handle. Won’t you be annoyed?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Dangui regretted it.
He didn’t know what was wrong with him. He had persevered for so many years, and these shameful little emotions should have been kept hidden deep inside. Back in his office, he was still the lovable Dr. Lu.
How did he end up telling this stranger everything just because he provoked him?
The man tilted his head slightly, as if he didn’t understand.
Lu Dangui rolled his eyes and immediately turned around and walked back.
He was barely able to take care of himself, why would he care so much about this other person?
….
Watching the young doctor’s sullen figure disappear at the end of the tree-lined path, the man in the wheelchair spoke calmly: “Xing Shi.”
A rustling sound came from the bushes behind the bench, and a black figure silently emerged from behind.
Xing Shi hurriedly plucked the leaves from his head: “Young Master, what are your orders?”
Xing Shi was about to leave when the young doctor first left. But the young master gestured to him, so he had to sneak back inside.
The young master handed over the tablet: “Take notes.”
Xing Shi took the tablet and quickly opened the spreadsheet to record the information.
[Today’s Progress Observation]
“Autumn in My Heart” / Episodes 16-18
[Emotional and behavioral] No significant fluctuations.
[Remark]
….
Xing Shi thought about it for a moment but still didn’t write in the remarks column that the young master had chatted with a strange doctor for a long time.
The medical team had developed a multi-stage treatment plan. The most important aspect of this plan was to improve the young master’s empathy.
To elicit a strong emotional response from the young master, the team created a “must-watch list of movies and TV series.” The list consisted entirely of melodramatic and over-the-top scenes.
The young master had been watching “Autumn in My Heart” for more than ten days, but so far it didn’t seem to have any effect.
“Was that person a psychiatrist?”
On the way back to the rehabilitation department, the young master suddenly asked.
Xing Shi bowed down and covered the young master with a blanket: “At this hour, appearing in the psychiatric ward, he must be a psychiatrist.”
“Um.”
The young master responded but seemed somewhat absent-minded.
“Go and confirm with Dean Qiu.” After a while, he heard the young master say, “I want to make an appointment with him next Monday.”
