Yu Linlang didn’t know when she drifted off to sleep.

She was awakened in the early morning by a series of banging and knocking on the door. She rubbed her forehead and muttered to herself, “Didn’t sleep well.”

Just as she was about to get up to open the door, she heard Jiu Jin’s angry, loud voice coming from the courtyard, “Young Miss, haven’t you been going crazy all night? Why are you knocking on my young lady’s door before dawn? Even if you don’t sleep, my young lady still needs to sleep!”

Yu Qiuping ignored Jiu Jin’s curses and continued banging on the door like a madwoman.

Yu Linlang got out of bed, put on an outer robe, and expressionlessly unlatched the brass latch, looking at Yu Qiuping standing outside the door like a vengeful ghost.

“Miss, why are you dressed so thinly?” Jiu Jin hurriedly put down the wooden bucket she had brought and stepped forward to shove Yu Qiuping away. “Young Miss, if you’re going crazy, go back to your room.”

“Get away.” Yu Qiuping, with a sudden burst of strength, pushed Jiu Jin aside and grabbed Yu Linlang’s hand tightly. “Third Sister, please help me, please help me! I know you can definitely help me.”

“For the sake of our shared misery, please help me just this once! Just this once!” She held up a finger, trembling as she shook it. “Third Sister, I! Was! Wrong! As long as you can help me, I’m willing to kowtow to you a hundred times to admit my mistake!”

Yu Qiuping knelt down in front of Yu Linlang with a “thump,” seemingly feeling no pain even though her knees had bruised a large patch on the threshold. Ba Liang, who had just arrived, was startled by her actions and stopped when she saw her young mistress raise her hand.

Yu Linlang glanced at her, “Although Madam Huo is foolish, she’s not stupid. You need to know when to play the fool. She just arranged a marriage for you, and now you’re acting like you’ve lost your mind. Who in the manor will believe you?”

“The old lady herself has spoken, so the marriage is a done deal. As long as the horoscopes are matched, the wedding date should be arranged. Your father said the process should be simplified, which means the wedding date will likely be before the new year.”

Yu Qiuping looked as if she had lost her parents.

Seeing her like this, Yu Linlang shook her head, took the booklet Jiu Jin handed her, and flipped through it. “The future husband they’ve chosen for you is named Wu Zhe. Although he’s over thirty and has a son and a daughter, he’s handsome, a decent person, has no bad habits, and his official career is going well.”

“Although he’s from a collateral branch of the Wu family in the capital, he’s quite capable and highly regarded by the elders of the clan. He’s served as the county magistrate in Wuhu County for many years and has achieved considerable success. If nothing unexpected happens, the husband your father chose for you will be transferred back to the capital early next year.”

Yu Qiuping was stunned, slowly raising her head to look at her, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. “Third sister, do you mean that the marriage the family chose for me is… actually not bad?”

“For a concubine’s daughter like you, it is indeed not bad.” Yu Linlang’s words were extremely cold and ruthless. “As far as I know, County Magistrate Wu’s parents have already passed away. Once you marry him, you can be the mistress of the house.”

“The governor isn’t a fool. Choosing a match for his daughter is essentially a transaction. A good marriage will bring benefits to the family in the future.”

“He’d have to be a fool to marry you off to a beggar and a destitute man. If he hadn’t weighed things carefully, your father wouldn’t have agreed to this marriage.”

“The marriage can’t be changed, but you can control your own future.”

“Whether you marry happily and become a perfect couple with County Magistrate Wu or go there resentfully and end up hating your future husband, is your choice.”

Yu Qiuping felt a chill run down her spine as she listened to her constant talk of transactions and benefits. It was clear that her father, the governor, and the Huo family didn’t consider this family as family.

She didn’t ask Yu Linlang how she knew these things, but solemnly kowtowed to her, “Third sister, I will never forget your kindness. In the past, I was blinded by greed and willingly became Yu Pianpian’s lackey, joining her in dealing with you. I will never do that again!”

Yu Linlang smiled faintly, “Whether you’re on opposing sides or not is useless to me.”

“If you truly want things to improve, first change your opportunistic and snobbish nature, and behave yourself.”

After saying this, Yu Linlang turned and went into the house.

Jiu Jin and Ba Liang quickly pushed past the young lady and closed the door with considerable disdain.

Yu Qiuping called out loudly from outside, “Third Sister, I will remember your words today, thank you.”

“How strange, how come she’s suddenly smarter after being crazy all night?” Jiu Jin went forward to fetch water for Yu Linlang to wash her face.

“She knows that even if she pretends to be crazy, it won’t help. What’s done is done.”

Ba Liang combed Yu Linlang’s long hair and asked softly, “Why were you so impatient to talk to her so much so early in the morning?”

Yu Linlang was annoyed just thinking about it. “Just tell her clearly and get rid of her so she won’t bother me again.”

“Exactly. Even in old age, there’s no peace and quiet. Every day it’s either someone dying or someone else dying, or she’s making a scene and trying to destroy the house.”

Yu Linlang couldn’t help but laugh and pushed the brat. “You always mimic me.”

….

“The number of refugees falling ill outside the city has been increasing these past two days. If this continues, it might not be good.” Lu Qian sighed and rubbed her forehead. “We have contacted several clinics to provide free medical services outside the city every day, but we are having a rather difficult time getting medicine…”

“Although the clinics have done a good deed by providing free medical consultations and medicine, they still can’t supply such a large group of refugees.”

Mu Zhao sat at his desk, flipping through the information on the refugees in his hands, and frowned for a long time, comparing it with the grain storage book next to him.

At this moment, Chen Buyu arrived with Wei Ling to pay their respects. Upon entering, he went straight to the point, “Your Highness, I still need some manpower here.”

“We sent someone to Niu Jiaji and met Niu Daji’s wife. We learned that Niu Daji’s mother had left home a day ago, saying she was coming to Weizhou Prefecture to find her son.”

“Judging by the journey, she should have arrived today, no matter how slow she is!”

“But we haven’t seen her yet. The murderer seems to have a grudge against the Niu family, so I thought we should find this old woman first and try to find out the reason.”

“What about Niu Daji’s wife? What did she say?” Lu Qian pressed.

“This new bride only entered the family at the beginning of the year and doesn’t know much about the Niu family’s past connections. Upon hearing that Niu Daji was murdered, she just cried and sobbed, unable to explain anything.” Chen Buyu sighed.

“Therefore, I wish to request the Prefectural Governor’s Office to gather some men to search for this Granny Niu along the way. I hope Your Highness will put in a good word for me.” This meant that Lord Yu had refused him, and he wanted the Prince to intervene and pressure the old man Yu, urging him to send men quickly and stop stalling.

Lu Qian glanced at Mu Zhao with considerable worry. The Prince had been preoccupied with the illnesses and food supplies of the refugees these past two days, and he feared the Prince’s health might suffer from the strain.

Mu Zhao thought for a moment and nodded, “We need to find a way to obtain the medicinal herbs, and the murder case must be solved as soon as possible. Have Yu Shoudao come over.”
