“No, no way. We’re not tied up here by the vice-captain to be the captain’s food, right?” Wei Yu stammered, his voice filled with terror.

“Roar—” Lan Zhi wanted to say no, but a howl came out of his mouth, and he immediately regretted not speaking again.

His throat continued to make hoarse sounds.

Wei Yu turned pale with fright. If he hadn’t been in the apocalypse for a while, he would have fainted. But in this situation, Wei Yu would rather have fainted.

Hearing Wei Yu’s words, everyone’s hearts sank to the bottom.

“No, it can’t be Lan Sheng. How could Lan Sheng tie us up here?” Xiao Heng shook his head and said with pursed lips, “That Fu Ke is gone too, maybe it’s Fu Ke.”

Lan Zhi wanted to roll his eyes at their guessing. Seeing a chair on the side, he staggered over.

Seeing Lan Zhi move, everyone held their breath and dared not speak again.

Fu Ke watched the commotion with a wide smile, in a very good mood. She then pushed open the door in front of her. Because Song Jing and the others hadn’t found the key to open the cages yet, and didn’t dare to force their way in, the people locked in the cages were still inside.

A dozen or so researchers and assistants were tied up near the lab beds.

At the very front was the old researcher.

“Dr. Cheng?” Fu Ke looked at the old researcher and smiled.

The old researcher was Dr. Cheng. After being tied up here, he had been thinking about how to survive. The fact that these people had tied them up but hadn’t done anything to them proved that they probably didn’t want to kill them.

It was just a pity about this research institute, which had been built with great difficulty.

But when he saw Fu Ke, he froze. He instinctively wanted to rub his eyes and adjust his glasses, but his hands and feet were tied up and he couldn’t.

“You.” Dr. Cheng looked at Fu Ke. Apart from her blood-red eyes, she didn’t have any other zombie characteristics.

Fu Ke glanced at the people locked in the cages. They looked at her, but remained silently crouched inside, seemingly indifferent. They didn’t ask her to release them.

No, perhaps they were simply numb.

Fu Ke smiled at them, stood up, and walked over. Her fingers traced the lock on the iron cage, and it clicked open.

She opened the cage: “Come out, everyone. It’s alright now. Anyone who wants to leave can leave now. If you’re scared, you can wait a while; someone will take you away later.”

As she spoke, several cages were opened.

At first, no one came out of the cages that were opened. It wasn’t until Fu Ke opened the cage containing the children that the children immediately rushed out.

However, once out of the cages, they stood there timidly, unsure of what to do.

Fu Ke had also collected a lot of food while collecting crystal cores. She took out sausages from her spatial storage and distributed them to the children: “Eat something first. Aren’t you starving?”

Some children looked at Fu Ke warily, hesitant to eat.

However, some children were already starving and fiercely tore open the sausages with their teeth, then wolfed them down.

Perhaps they were too dry, as they choked for a while before swallowing.

Once someone started eating, the other children joined in.

“Thank you, sister,” a little girl in a floral dress whispered to Fu Ke.

Watching them eat the delicious sausages, Fu Ke felt even hungrier. Fortunately, she no longer had such a strong appetite for humans, and even in this state of hunger, she didn’t feel any urge to eat the children.

“Don’t be shy, you wait here, and I’ll take you away in a little while, okay?”

The children nodded obediently and stood aside waiting for Fu Ke.

“Sister.” The little girl in the floral dress grabbed Fu Ke’s clothes, her eyes brimming with tears. “They’re bad people, please don’t let them go!”

Fu Ke patted the little girl’s head. “Okay, sister won’t let them go.”

“You, you’re not human! You’re a zombie!” Dr. Cheng tensed up upon hearing the conversation between the little girl and Fu Ke. He had seen it clearly through his glasses.

Fu Ke hadn’t used a key when she opened the cage, meaning that regardless of whether she was a zombie or not, she was incredibly strong!

Dr. Cheng wasn’t certain that Fu Ke was a zombie; he only had some suspicions. Hearing Fu Ke say she wouldn’t let them go, he panicked and shouted recklessly.

However, Dr. Cheng hadn’t expected Fu Ke to smile at him. “Correct answer, I can reward you with a quicker death, less pain.”

A collective gasp filled the laboratory. Turning back, everyone recoiled, staring at Fu Ke in terror. They were especially horrified by her bloodshot eyes.

Only the little girl in the floral dress seemed oblivious to what Dr. Cheng was saying. Clinging tightly to Fu Ke’s clothes, the little girl stubbornly pursed her lips.

Fu Ke’s gaze softened upon seeing the little girl.

She ruffled the girl’s hair: “There are no absolutely good people in the world, nor are there absolutely bad people. So what if they’re zombies? Compared to some two-faced people, I find zombies much cuter.”

After saying this, she looked at the people behind Dr. Cheng: “Would you rather come with me, or die with Dr. Cheng?”

For a moment, the dozen or so people exchanged glances.

“Sister!” the little girl screamed, looking at Fu Ke, not understanding why Fu Ke hadn’t kept her word.

Fu Ke gave her a reassuring look and picked her up: “I said, there are no absolutely good people in this world, nor are there absolutely bad people.”

“You only see what they’re doing, but you don’t know how much pain they’re in while doing these things,” Fu Ke explained calmly to the little girl, regardless of whether she understood.

Apart from Dr. Cheng, these people hadn’t come here voluntarily.

Under the threat of death, they had yielded. It was indeed despicable, but Fu Ke felt she could understand. After all, who in this world wants to die?

“We can’t let them go! They’ve committed countless evils, they’re worse than animals! Such people can’t be allowed to live!” A voice erupted from the crowd.

“Are you talking to me?” Fu Ke turned and smiled slightly. “Please stand up when you speak, instead of hiding behind others.”

His gaze was fixed on the person who had just spoken.

The person’s face turned deathly pale; Fu Ke’s gaze made their legs go weak, let alone allow them to stand up.

Fu Ke chuckled. “Heh…human.”

His icy tone made the little girl he was holding tremble. She looked at Fu Ke and said weakly, “Sister, don’t be angry.”

Looking at the little girl, he asked, “Aren’t you afraid of me?”

The little girl shook her head. “Sister is a good person.”

Seemingly considering it for a moment, realizing that what she said might be a little inappropriate, the little girl added earnestly, “No, sister is a good zombie.”

Fu Ke couldn’t help but laugh; the oppressive atmosphere that had been building around the group because of the person who had suddenly spoken eased. Fu Ke’s gaze then lingered on the group of researchers: “Well, have you made up your mind?”

Dr. Cheng angrily tried to speak but suddenly found himself unable to utter a sound.

….

D City Base.

A modified car stopped at the base entrance, and several young men got out.

The man in the lead glanced at the D City University sign, took out a cigarette from his pocket, and lit it. He took a drag, and white smoke curled from his mouth.

After a while, he said, “Wait here for me, I’ll go ask.”

He then strode over.

“Please have your body checked at the checkpoint and then register.”

Not as many people were coming to the base as before, but people still joined from time to time. So when the man went over, the people at the entrance let him through without hesitation.

“Excuse me, I don’t want to enter the base. Excuse me, is there someone here named Zhang Zhongmin?” the man asked politely.

In the D City base, who didn’t know who Zhang Zhongmin was? Hearing the man’s question, the person at the door nodded: “You’re looking for Squad Leader Zhang? What’s the matter?”

Hearing that Zhang Zhongmin was at the base, the man breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness he was there; otherwise, they really wouldn’t know where to look.

“Could you please let Zhang Zhongmin come out for a moment? We’ve been asked by his family to come and find him,” the man said with a smile.

“Huh?” The person at the door was stunned, then quickly said, “Okay, okay, wait a moment, I’ll go find Squad Leader Zhang right away.”

During this time, after things stabilized at the base, some people came and some left. Most of those with relatives were still hoping to go back and see if their loved ones were still alive.

However, some people’s relatives came to the D City base and settled down there.

But very few people were able to reunite.

Even the squad leaders had left.

Xiao Bin left after Du Weiwei left without being rescued. He also returned to S City, but not to find Du Weiwei, instead to find his parents.

Du Weiwei and Xiao Bin’s parents both live in S City, but when Du Weiwei came to D City, she didn’t visit Xiao Bin’s parents. And when Xiao Bin saw Du Weiwei, he didn’t even think of his own parents.

He didn’t ask Du Weiwei about them either. This incident with Du Weiwei deeply hurt him, and he suddenly remembered his parents.

Zhang Zhongmin, upon receiving the news, immediately came out of the base. Seeing a strange man, he frowned and strode over to him.

“May I ask who you are?”

The man smiled slightly. “You must be Zhang Zhongmin? I’ve seen your photo. Hello, my name is Rong He. I came from City B, intending to return to my hometown. I was asked by your sister to come and find you.”

Zhang Zhongmin didn’t recognize Rong He, but upon hearing that he was asked by his sister, he couldn’t help but ask, “Has something happened to my parents?”

Seeing Zhang Zhongmin’s anxious expression, the man shook his head. “No, your parents are fine. Your sister is now the captain of the Seventh Squadron in City D, quite prestigious. But your parents are worried about you. Your sister said that if you’re still alive, she hopes you can go back. Don’t let your parents worry.”

It had been over a year since the apocalypse, and Zhang Zhongmin was now thirty-two years old; his parents were indeed getting old. Zhang Zhongmin’s eyes were somewhat clouded.

“I understand, thank you,” Zhang Zhongmin said.

“No need to thank me. If it weren’t for your sister, I would have died long ago. I’m happy to be able to help.” The man waved his hand. “Since I’ve delivered the message, I’ll be going now. See you again someday.”

After seeing the man off, Zhang Zhongmin stood at the base entrance, looking in the direction of City B.

After a while, his gaze shifted to the Exclusive Restaurant. Ever since Fu Ke left, Qiu Yi had also left. The door to the Exclusive Restaurant hadn’t been opened again.

Zhang Zhongmin hadn’t touched the food Fu Ke had left inside, and no one else had taken it.

Turning back towards the base, he felt a deep sense of melancholy.

Liu Dazhi, the class monitor of Class Five, had recently left, and Qin Long had taken his place.

During the last mission, Qin Long and his team encountered two Tier 3 zombies. In the face of danger, he finally unleashed his hidden lightning ability.

Perhaps it was a case of accumulating power before unleashing it; Qin Long had been constantly training his ability, resulting in a leap to the peak of Tier 4 when it was finally activated.

That day, Zhang Zhongmin convened an emergency meeting with all the class monitors.
