Gu Wuji’s room had a private courtyard with two deluxe guest rooms. The courtyard also featured artificial hills and flowing water, exuding a very sophisticated atmosphere.
Even in the dark of night, the courtyard was always lit.
At this moment, Gu Wuji entered the bathroom, took off his clothes, and examined his back in the mirror.
The mirror reflected a perfectly ordinary back; there was nothing on his back.
Gu Wuji also reached out and touched it but felt nothing. So he shook his head, “It really couldn’t be something so easily discovered, could it?”
Afterward, Gu Wuji took a quick shower, put on a bathrobe, and emerged from the bathroom feeling refreshed. As he passed the floor-to-ceiling window, he looked outside.
Everything seemed perfectly normal; although there was still a sense of eeriness, it didn’t seem too dangerous.
“This is really not right.”
Gu Wuji couldn’t help but ponder. According to what the system and Yang Shao had said, there should be many ghosts waiting to attack him, but so far he had only encountered a few… and the few ghosts he had encountered on his way back and while washing up were all purified by Gu Wuji in the blink of an eye. Cheng Jia hadn’t even noticed these things.
“I feel like things shouldn’t be like this. Or is it like in a dungeon, where these ghosts need to wait for a certain opportunity to attack?”
Thinking of this, Gu Wuji felt he should conserve his energy and rest.
“Master Gu, is there anything wrong outside?” Cheng Jia asked nervously.
“There’s nothing wrong. Go to sleep.” Gu Wuji said frankly. Anyway, he had already instructed Austin to guard the courtyard. If any ghosts did come, Austin would catch them first.
Although Austin wasn’t exactly a high-level ghost, having worked under a powerful ghost boss for so long, he was definitely more experienced and skilled than most ghosts. Now that he had a physical form, even ordinary ghosts couldn’t recognize him as one of their own… If Gu Wuji hadn’t been kind-hearted, Austin could have done countless heinous things.
To save trouble, Gu Wuji also handed over his former shadowy ghosts and the monsters from the painting world to Austin for training.
“Master Gu, could you put a few more talismans on me? I’m really worried!” Cheng Jia looked at Gu Wuji pleadingly.
“It’s alright, I’ll definitely sense danger before you do. If you’re worried, just sleep next to me.” Gu Wuji casually patted the bed beside him; it was big enough to comfortably fit two more people.
Cheng Jia was initially overjoyed. Although it might be a little offensive to Master Gu, sleeping next to him would definitely be incredibly safe! But then his body stiffened again, and Cheng Jia suddenly had a strong premonition that if he really went to sleep in the same bed as Master Gu, he might die at any moment.
“Never mind, Master Gu, I’ll just sleep here.”
“Alright.” Gu Wuji didn’t insist and said, “If you really can’t sleep, you can help me look up information about this village, um… and preferably information about this house as well. I think there must be some information worth knowing.”
After saying that, Gu Wuji lay down.
Cheng Jia was stunned to see Gu Wuji lying on the bed like that, falling asleep in just a few breaths. Master Gu was still as casual as ever.
Cheng Jia turned off the light and turned on the dim nightlight, lay down on the sofa, placed the talisman on himself, took a deep breath, and kept muttering to himself, “If I fall asleep, everything will be fine… definitely…”
….
Outside, Austin was sitting in a chair in the garden, and the monsters from the world in the painting were still running around under his training.
Austin felt annoyed that he hadn’t noticed Gu Wuji had entered the instance again. While he was outside, Gu Wuji had experienced a terrifying life-or-death crisis!
Still shaken, Austin was even more determined to fulfill his duty.
“You remember this well: protecting your master is your most important task! Anyone who dares to harm him, whether human or ghost, bite them first!”
The monsters, seemingly instructed by Austin, even barked twice.
The shadowy ghost stood to the side like a subordinate, looking at Austin with boundless admiration, increasingly convinced that its decision to follow Gu Wuji was the right one. It hadn’t expected that in just a few months, Gu Wuji would have acquired such a powerful ghost as a subordinate! What kind of powerful figure had it latched onto?!
“And you,” Austin looked at the shadowy ghost with disdain. If it weren’t for the fact that this ghost had followed Gu Wuji for so long and had some merit, he would have thought to just purify the ghost… Being around him lowered his own status.
The shadowy figure nodded immediately, looking at Austin with a mixture of nervousness and anticipation, wondering what task the other would give.
“Go and wander around this house, see if there’s anything wrong. Don’t kill any low-level ghosts you encounter; bring them back if you can. If you can’t defeat them, run back to me,” Austin said, then suddenly sensing something, his eyes turned cold. “Oh? Looks like some unruly things want to come here for whatever they want… I need to leave them with a lasting impression.”
….
The staff members, walking along, suddenly realized something was amiss.
“Why has it been so dark all this way? Is this place really that shabby?”
“Maybe the lights are broken. It’s perfect timing for our operation.”
They were planning to install cameras outside Gu Wuji’s residence to capture something that could become a scandal. Strangely, there were no security cameras in the house, which made things convenient for them.
Just then, one of the people walking in the middle casually turned his head to look but paused when he saw an inconspicuous building next to him. “Was someone there just now?”
“What are you talking about? Why would someone be out here taking a walk so late at night? Besides, it’s impossible for there to be no noise at all!”
The others completely ignored it. Although there were always rumors of ghosts in this village, and the staff and villagers all seemed hesitant to speak, they were sure it was all an act to attract tourists.
Only the person who spoke was starting to feel uneasy.
“Don’t you feel a little cold?”
“It’s because it’s late, don’t scare yourself.” Another person shook his head and patted the person behind him, but his hand touched a stiff and cold object. He froze.
“Who are you talking to? We’re all here.” The people in front seemed puzzled and turned to look at them, then one by one, they showed expressions of terror.
The man turned around tremblingly, only to find a long-haired woman behind him, her face torn and bleeding profusely. Her bloodshot eyes stared directly at him, her gaping maw filled with fangs, seemingly ready to tear him apart.
“Aaaaaaaahh …
Screams erupted one after another. The men, who had previously maintained their composure, were now terrified, their hearts pounding in their throats. They fled for their lives, fearing that falling behind would mean being haunted by the female ghost. Their appearance was utterly disheveled.
Meanwhile, the shadowy ghost disguised as a long-haired woman felt its actions were incredibly worthwhile! Although it had to wear women’s clothing… being able to frighten these people who dared to try anything with Gu Wuji was already incredibly fulfilling!
However, the shadowy ghost noticed that there seemed to be one less person chasing it than before, but it didn’t think much of it… after all, it was a ghost; surely it knew where ghosts were?
After everyone had left, a strange shadow emerged from the shadows. It looked remarkably similar to the staff, but its face was deathly pale.
It stared menacingly at their departing figures before slowly fading into the air, leaving no trace.
The staff had no idea that the terrifying female ghost chasing them had, in a way, saved their lives.
