Although her appearance wasn’t particularly striking, her plain blue dress couldn’t conceal her dignified demeanor.

Even the daughters of wealthy families raised in prestigious houses wouldn’t be outdone, but this girl had been abandoned in the countryside for over a decade and had never had a tutor.

How could this be so strange…

Mama Zhao was puzzled, but without pausing, she led Yu Linlang and the others to the entrance of Yuchun Garden.

“Miss, please wait here for a moment,”

Mama Zhao said, turning to a maid standing at the door and winking. “Go in and tell her that Miss Yu has arrived.”

She turned to look at Yu Linlang, and seeing her expression calm and unamused, she couldn’t help but feel curious.

An ordinary girl, abandoned by her family for so many years, finally returned home. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t be as calm as she was.

This expression of indifference, neither sadness nor joy, neither anger nor resentment, always made one feel something was missing.

Mama Zhao had an indescribable feeling.

After standing quietly outside the gate for a moment, the little maid hurried out, glanced at Yu Linlang, and said with a smile, “Mama Zhao, Madam said she was a little tired today, and since it’s getting late, she asked Miss Yu to return to her own garden to rest. We can discuss anything tomorrow.”

Mama Zhao turned her gaze to Yu Linlang again. Seeing that her expression was still calm, she couldn’t help but wonder.

If it were someone else, abandoned by their parents for years and now treated so distantly by their own mother, they would surely have burst into tears long ago, right?

But this Miss Yu’s heart seemed calm and unperturbed, her expression normal and indescribable!

She didn’t seem surprised by her birth mother’s disapproval. Instead she turned to Mama Hu and said, “Lead the way.”

Mama Hu, watching the scene with a sidelong glance, noticed Yu Linlang’s gaze and quickly straightened her expression, twitching her lips. “Yes.”

Mama Zhao saw this and hurried forward to escort her out of the courtyard, still smiling and smoothing things over. “Actually, Madam has been talking about the young lady constantly these past two days. We didn’t expect you to be delayed so late on the journey. Madam, the head of the household, is quite exhausted after a day, and I think she doesn’t want to be in such a bad mood when meeting Miss Yu.”

“Don’t take it personally, young lady. You’ve been through the wind and sun all the way. Rest well and freshen up today. Madam will definitely invite you to come for a mother-daughter reunion tomorrow.”

“Yes,” Yu Linlang nodded calmly. “Mama, please stay.”

They reached the corridor door, where the fragrance of cosmetics filled their faces.

A group of chattering little girls surrounded a beautiful girl with bright eyes and white teeth and walked towards the entrance of Yuchun Garden.

The girl wore her hair in a double bun and a wide, water-red gown.

The embroidery on her dress was exquisite, the peony and bamboo patterns on the hem vividly alive. As she walked, the hem of her dress swayed gently, casting a brilliant crimson shadow in the setting sun.

As they met, Mama Zhao, Mama Hu, and the others all smiled and came forward, greeting her warmly. “Oh, it’s the young lady!”

“Madam, I thought the young lady wasn’t coming. Hurry, please come in.”

“The teacher had a meeting today, so we’re late. Mother, hasn’t she retired yet?” the girl in the red dress asked, her eyes curling.

“No, no, our young lady is incredibly filial, visiting her morning and night. Madam will certainly be waiting for you.”

The girl in the red dress smiled as she approached Mama Zhao’s side and followed her inside.

As she passed Yu Linlang, she glanced at her with a faint glance, then smiled and walked away with the madam.

“Mama, who is that?”

“Oh, it’s Miss Linlang who just came back today.”

“Oh~ it’s her.” The woman raised her voice, with a hint of inexplicable mockery in her tone.

Jiu Jin clenched her stiff fists, wondering what the hell. She turned and rolled her eyes at the group’s departing backs.

Mama Hu stole a glance at Yu Linlang’s expression, seeing her plain face still etched with indifference, and felt utterly bored.

Seeing Yu Linlang’s silence, Mama Hu couldn’t help but speak first. “That was Miss Yu Pianpian, our family’s most outstanding daughter. Raised in the care of Madam from childhood, she is a master of all arts, including music, chess, calligraphy, and painting.”

“Miss Pianpian is currently studying at the Weizhou branch of Shuyun Women’s College, the most prestigious in the capital, and consistently achieves top marks.”

“With Miss Pianpian’s talent, beauty, and knowledge, she’d be among the best in the capital,” Mama Hu rambled on, her small eyes scrutinizing Yu Linlang.

But she quickly became disappointed.

This Miss Yu was truly patient.

When an ordinary person first encountered a woman who has usurped their status and position, they would at least show some emotion, if not be overcome with jealousy and the urge to tear her apart on the spot.

But Miss Yu showed no emotion at all, like… an emotionless stone sculpture, seemingly unable to stir her emotions.

It was a strange combination of circumstances that had led to Miss Pianpian’s adoption into the mansion. Unexpectedly, the mistress developed feelings for her, and even after learning that Miss Pianpian was not her biological daughter, she simply allowed the situation to continue.

This was perhaps the so-called fate of mother and daughter in a previous life. Unlike Miss Linlang, she and the mistress had a naturally weak mother-daughter bond, and they could never get along.

“Have we reached the garden yet?” Jiu Jin asked with a sullen face, “How long will it take?”

Mama Hu’s heart skipped a beat, fearing that the damn girl would come up with her fists raised to beat people again, so she hurriedly said, “It’s just in front.”

“Come with me to the front yard later, call more servants over, and move all my daughter’s potted plants to where they live.”

Mama Hu couldn’t help but curl her lips when she heard that, “I’m afraid there’s not enough space for all those flowers and plants.”

Jiu Jin had been humiliated on the way, and now she couldn’t bear it anymore, so she went up and punched the old woman on the head, “If there’s no space, I’ll feed you.”

Mama Hu screamed “Aiya” in surprise, holding her head and shrinking back, “Well, I’m telling the truth. Look, it’s just in front, it’s the garden.”

“Our mansion is not big. In the past, the eldest and second daughters had to squeeze into the Magnolia Garden to live together. Later, the lady felt sorry for the second daughter, Miss Pianpian, and allocated most of the west side of the garden to her to build a house.”

“Now, Miss Yu, your house is the east wing where Miss Pianpian used to live.”

“How much stuff can be put into such a small yard?”

“Stop talking nonsense, just move it if I tell you to!” Jiu Jin glared at her and walked forward to help her daughter into the Magnolia Garden.

It was indeed just a very small courtyard, with a corridor connecting the east and west wing rooms, and a very small patio in the middle, with a stone table and three stone benches.

This place should have been used as a study in the mansion, but there were so many people in the governor’s mansion that the rooms were almost crowded with people.

Some concubines who were not favored might not even have such a small courtyard with a separate entrance and exit.

Yu Linlang and her servant pushed open the door of the east wing and could not help but frown.
