But can I say it?
“This isn’t Earth!”
As I was walking around town, curious to see what was happening, looking like a total tourist, I was struck by lightning when I saw a stunningly beautiful woman walking towards me on the opposite side of the street.
That beautiful woman…she had fair skin and golden hair that reached down to her waist, and her beauty was enhanced by the occasional glimpse of her hair, without interfering with it.
She wore grass-green clothing that seemed to symbolize her race and a beautiful purple breastplate, with a slender, supple waist.
And distinctive long, thin ears.
“Just like Deedlit[1].”
I was deeply moved by the sight of this beautiful elf woman who seemed to have come straight out of an adventure novel I had read a long time ago.
I was moved by her beauty when I saw the elf beauty for the first time. However, the existence of elves meant that this place was not the place where I was born, raised, or lived.
Earth
To begin with, it’s already a mess just from the fact that the closet in the room was connected to the outside…
While I was thinking about this, I arrived at the end of the main street that stretched out to the west.
Unlike the south side, there was no gate leading outside on this side.
At the western end of the town, a small wooden fence surrounded the town, with a river flowing outside and a small mound of earth on the inside acting as a levee, though it could not be called a defensive wall. The mound and the river probably also served as a moat.
Perhaps the reason they had not built a gate here was because there were no beneficial connections or land in the future, or perhaps there were disadvantages to building one that outweighed the benefits.
Building gates and roads was not always a positive thing.
Gates certainly made it easier for people and things to enter and exit, but they also carried the risk of enemies and pests getting in. Paths made it easier, but the same went for uninvited people.
Sneaking in was one thing, but speed was also important when attacking or fleeing. Even if you notice an attack, if they quickly invade before you are ready to defend, there is no point in having a fence around you.
If the roads remained in the wilderness and were waist- or chest-high, people would not be able to run freely, and horse-drawn carriages would not be able to enter. The roads do not discriminate between the good and evil of those who use them.
Roads are a double-edged sword that can be both good and bad for a town.
….
Suddenly, my vision became a little darker, like when I go into the shadows.
I looked up, thinking that I wasn’t in the shadow of any building, and saw that the sun had hidden behind the clouds.
The gatekeepers said it was getting hot and humid, so the sun was probably just right. It would probably cool down a bit once the sunlight died down.
I had reached the dead end on the western side and looked around at my surroundings.
Paths stretched both north and south along the fence, like a perimeter road.
I thought about going back the way I came, but it would be boring to go the same way. Should I go north or south? Well, I guess I should go north… Since I came from the south.
I started walking north. The buildings gradually became smaller and stone structures became less common. Older and older buildings also began to appear.
Still, this place was better than the others. As I headed north, the road seemed to get more and more chaotic. The straight outer road ended and the area became more and more chaotic. Perhaps there were slums or other areas with poor security further.
People like me who live comfortably in modern Japan would probably just look like easy targets, naive to peace, to people living in dangerous areas.
If that happens, I might lose my money or belongings or even be killed. Thinking about it was scary.
So I decided to turn back around here, and as I turned right to go in the opposite direction, I saw a side road heading east.
It felt like it was parallel to the main road that ran east to west. This town was not particularly hilly, so it didn’t have a grid like Kyoto’s, but it did seem to be laid out fairly regularly. The river itself meandered gently, but the fences were pulled inward to some extent, creating a linear layout.
Looking further down the side street, I saw what appeared to be a woman kneeling on the side of the road, remaining in that position. There were other passersby, but they all saw the woman but didn’t do anything and just walked past.
I was sure nothing would happen if I took the same route home… The most I would do is look back at a beautiful woman passing by… or something like that.
Let’s turn right… I’m curious. Go and see if it doesn’t concern me, then just leave.
So I turned right onto the road that circled the perimeter and started walking east.
