Xuan Ming died on the road before being sent to the hospital. Zhuang Li, who was covered in blood, locked himself in the bedroom after returning home and did not eat or drink for three days. He needed a lot of time to think, digest, and bear the shock of Xuan Ming’s death for him.
Why was his homeland, his compatriots, willing to sacrifice themselves for the so-called continuation of humanity? This question was something that Zhuang Li could not figure out no matter what. His clever brain could solve most of the mysteries in the world, but he couldn’t solve this knot.
But now he figured it out.
He found the answer from Xuan Ming. It was to protect, to leave the hope of life to the people you cared about most.
Zhuang Li’s eyes once again filled with warmth, and two lines of wet tears slid down his cheeks and soaked into the corners of his mouth, bringing an unspeakable bitterness with it, but making him laugh suddenly in realization.
It took him more than seventy hours of thinking before he finally figured out that Xuan Ming probably loved him. This belated realization stung his self-proclaimed cold heart and left a deep mark.
Zhuang Li covered his eyes and lay quietly in the soft chair, as if he had fallen asleep.
But 7480 knew that his ideological activities were more intense than ever. The various magnetic fields bursting out from his brain almost disrupted the core program of 7480.
Zhuang Li was recalling the past, and those memories filled with smoke and blood had been reinforced and sealed in the depths of his mind layer by layer.
He thought of his motherland and compatriots who were reduced to smoke and dust under the bombardment of nuclear bombs; then he thought of the captain pushing his little child into the only rescue capsule when the spacecraft crashed; he thought of more than ten years of wandering; he also thought of those survivor bases built on Mars.
He had left them with a brand-new metal material. If those scientists were smart enough, they could build a spacecraft in about two years.
Two years were enough to consume the few resources on Mars, and humans would then die on a large scale. At the moment the spaceship was built, out of the original surviving population of more than 150 million, it was considered lucky if 20 to 30 million were able to survive.
And this result was already within his expectation.
In order to take revenge, Zhuang Li deliberately leaked his manuscript with major errors to John Poincaré and guided him to build some damn Dyson sphere to consume all the resources brought by humans from the earth; then, when all illusions came to an end, when everything came to nothing, he wanted to appear again as the savior.
He single-handedly led to the death of 120 million survivors, and this number was exactly equal to the number of Chinese martyrs.
He was not a savior, on the contrary, he was a devil crawling out of hell. His lifelong pursuit was only one thing, and that was revenge.
Even though he had taken so many lives, he didn’t feel any guilt in his heart. The reason why the Chinese people were willing to sacrifice was because the Federation promised them that they would bring all the old, weak, women and children of the Chinese country safely to Mars.
But what did the Federation end up doing? They secretly released the fuel of China’s spaceship, allowing most people to die in the flames of war, and refused to rescue the only spaceship that escaped the flames. And they did such a heinous thing just because China had the most survivors, and they were afraid that they would unite to form a large force and threaten the security of the federation.
For such a ridiculous reason, more than 100 million Chinese people died tragically.
So, how could Zhuang Li show mercy to the Federation’s people?
Those Federation people would never know who was the culprit who killed them. After successfully settling on the planet GJ536b, they would worship Zhuang Li as a god and build statues and even temples for him.
Zhuang Li smiled softly, but there were many tears flowing down his fingers.
He actually had a crueler plan back then.
When calculating Poincaré, the scenario he envisioned was the complete collapse of the Dyson sphere and the complete extinction of the human race. He was not even going to leave any damn new metal stuff behind. He wanted to kill all alien humans on Mars and bury them with his compatriots.
But while editing the revenge video, the voices of his compatriots kept coming to his ears. They repeated this sentence over and over again – may our sacrifices bring about the eternal survival of mankind…
So at the last moment of action, Zhuang Li accidentally left them a way to survive.
He still couldn’t figure out what he was thinking at the time, but now, the answer to that question didn’t matter. He was glad that he did not exterminate mankind, not because of his conscience, but because – if he had really done that, he would feel ashamed when he thought of his compatriots and Xuan Ming now.
People always wanted to protect something when they were alive. This was the meaning of life.
Zhuang Li couldn’t understand this truth before, because he preferred destroying to protecting things.
But now, he clenched his hands, trying to grasp this inexplicable feeling.
While he was staring at his fist in confusion, Chang Dongming’s voice came from outside the door: “Zhuang Li, Mr. Yao wants you to go to the company for a meeting immediately.” Saying this, he knocked on the door impatiently several times.
Zhuang Dahai’s voice also came: “He is very weak from not eating or drinking these days and has no time to go to the meeting. Don’t disturb him.”
Chang Dongming said with a strong tone: “He has to go even if he doesn’t want to. Mr. Yao has already taken over the office. As the head of the R&D department, he must submit this quarter’s work plan and performance report as soon as possible. Mr. Yao has waited for him for three days. That’s enough to give him face. If he doesn’t answer calls or text messages, what does that mean?”
Zhuang Dahai’s tone was filled with anger: “You knew that Xiao Li was frightened and you are forcing him to go to work. What do you mean? He is a minister, doesn’t he have the right to take a few days off?”
Chang Dongming suddenly sneered: “Minister? Maybe after today, Haiming Group’s surname would be Yao, not Xuan. Xuan Ming’s direct descendants have been scattered and dispersed these days, and they have all been cleaned up by Mr. Yao. Who do you think will be fired next?”
Chang Dongming increased the intensity of his knocks on the door, his voice full of contempt: “How much worth Zhuang Li has, you, as his father, know the best. If Xuan Ming hadn’t fallen in love with him, would he be where he is today? Mr. Yao has spent a lot of money to hire a team of experts from abroad, and they will soon replace Zhuang Li’s team and become the backbone of Haiming’s R&D team.”
“By the way,” Chang Dongming stopped knocking on the door and smiled happily: “Hurry up and rent a cheap house outside. The property management fees here are too expensive. I’m afraid Zhuang Li won’t be able to afford it. Without Xuan Ming as a backer, where can he find a job with an annual salary of 40 million?”
Because the state protected Zhuang Li too closely, although his laboratory was affiliated with Haiming Group, its operations were completely independent and its information could not be shared. As a result, many people in Haiming Group didn’t know what Zhuang Li did every day, and they regarded him as a flower vase.
Zhuang Dahai was frightened by the bad news.
Chang Dongming knocked on the door harder and threatened: “Zhuang Li, if you don’t go to the meeting today, you don’t have to come to work in the company tomorrow. Mr. Yao asked me to bring you a message. He said he doesn’t like raising useless people. You can take care of yourself.”
The door that had always been closed suddenly opened from the inside.
