A huge black screen appeared in his mind, with a dialog box flashing on it: Host, are you sure you want to shut down System hal-90000 (the system you are currently using)?

Li Yuebai didn’t hesitate and clicked “OK”.

The world went silent, and all the operating systems on the screen disappeared. After three seconds of blackout, like a computer restarting, a new system slowly reopened, with an unfamiliar interface.

“Hello, host. From now on, I will be your system until this journey is over,” the Judge said.

“Thank you. I hope you don’t feel offended,” Li Yuebai said. “I’m not usually this cruel to systems.”

“Please don’t worry, host. I’m not human and don’t have feelings of kinship,” the Judge replied.

“Okay.” Li Yuebai nodded and opened his eyes.

The tentacle creature’s corpse disappeared into the depths of the pool. It didn’t sink, but completely vanished, as if it had never existed in this world. It was just a temporarily materialized creature, and after completing its mission, there was no need for it to continue existing.

The pool returned to calm.

“Judge, will the [Banana Peel Mechanism] appear again?” Li Yuebai asked.

“No, the mission in this world is nearing its end. The system will no longer pose any obstacles to the host, nor will it directly kill the host and their allies,” the Judge replied.

Li Yuebai finally felt a little relieved.

After all, the last Banana Peel Mechanism had left him with a very deep psychological shadow, so deep that he was always worried that Ye Qing would be killed by the system again. That’s why he had to take a desperate gamble and request the main god to shut down the system, which was ultimately successful.

However, was Ye Qing really safe now?

Li Yuebai held his breath and strained to look at the battlefield not far away.

He could hear the sounds of weapons clashing, explosions, and even see the glowing light emitted by some strange spells.

“How’s the situation on Ye Qing’s side?”

“Not optimistic, the enemy has too many people,” the Judge replied.

“…Can I go up and help?”

“It’s best not to,” the Judge answered without hesitation.

“…” Li Yuebai felt that his current state was terrible, completely useless, unable to do anything, and could only hide in the water and pretend to be dead.

But the current situation was still not right.

Gao Chengyu’s target was him, so why didn’t he send anyone to capture him, instead focusing all his firepower on Ye Qing?

Moreover, he had clearly shouted towards Ye Qing just now; the other vampires couldn’t have missed his voice.

Even so, they still didn’t rush towards him but instead concentrated on Ye Qing.

Why?

Just as Li Yuebai was pondering this question, something drifted down into his field of vision, the moonlight shining on it— it was a piece of parchment with a missing corner, and judging by its direction, it must have floated out from the Seven Star Tower.

Li Yuebai was extremely familiar with this parchment; even the missing corner was familiar— it was the one he had personally cut out to send a message to Ye Qing.

He reached out slightly and caught the parchment in mid-air, unfolding it in the moonlight. Four words were displayed on it: “Found you.”

“What exactly do you want?” Li Yuebai impatiently wrote on it with his finger.

“My goal, just like in the Seven Star Tower, has never changed— to destroy the heart.”

“Your barrier has been broken.”

“Yes, but now, I have a better way.”

“…”

“Inside the barrier, as long as you personally killed Ye Qing’s phantom, your heart would be destroyed by pain. Now, things are even easier— the real Ye Qing is right here. If my men kill him in front of you, guess what the consequences will be?”

What consequences…

Li Yuebai couldn’t bear it after just imagining the scene.

If Ye Qing really died here… if Ye Qing really died in front of him… he had already experienced this feeling once, and remembered it clearly, even dreaming of it often, dreaming of Ye Qing dying bloodied in a museum. That pain and despair, he never wanted to experience again.

Moreover, he had already used extreme methods to “resurrect” Ye Qing once, enduring even more setbacks in the process. Finally, everything was alright now: the little girl hadn’t died, Ye Qing hadn’t killed anyone, and he had found a drink that could replace human blood. Everything seemed full of hope… As long as Gao Chengyu was defeated, everything in the future would be fine.

If Ye Qing died again, he truly had no way to save him again.

Li Yuebai didn’t know the nature of the original owner’s relationship with Ye Qing; he only knew that Ye Qing was the only person in this world who understood him, the only person who could fight alongside him, and the person he valued most. Having experienced so much, he should have long since become indifferent to life and death, but if Ye Qing died again, the pain would be unbearable.

He would collapse, he would sink into despair, he would be unable to escape the torment.

He would lose all ability to resist, becoming completely vulnerable.

Gao Chengyu would never let such an opportunity pass; he would seize the chance to imprison him and take everything.

Therefore, Ye Qing absolutely could not die.

“System, how is Ye Qing now?” Li Yuebai tried his best to see the battle situation in the darkness but still couldn’t make out anything.

“His life is in danger,” the Judge replied.

Ye Qing frowned as he looked at the large number of vampires in front of him.

The battle had been going on for some time, and the number of vampires showed no obvious signs of decreasing. Moreover, they were becoming increasingly annoying, even launching a verbal attack.

“Oh, isn’t this Joker?” A vampire revealed a sneaky smile under his black robe: “Joker, why are you going against us? Why are you helping that Vila? Don’t you know what ‘fellowship’ means?”

“Yes, the Vila is just a delicious meal for us.” Another vampire chimed in: “Joker, why don’t you give him up and let us share him?”

“Come over here, Joker, we are clearly of the same kind, why are you killing each other?” More voices rang out.

Despite the vampires’ seemingly friendly words, Ye Qing clearly saw through their intentions— if he truly believed them and abandoned his self-defense, they would immediately tear him apart, piercing his brain and heart with silver instruments.

Initially, Ye Qing also thought the vampires’ target was Li Yuebai.

But as the battle deepened, he gradually understood— at least at this stage, what the vampires wanted most was to kill him.

The moment he realized this, Li Yuebai sent a message through the system: “Xiao Ye, they want to kill you. Protect yourself.”

The so-called “kindred spirits”… infighting among their own kind was the norm in this world.

Ye Qing’s spear was fitted with a silver-plated bayonet tip, capable of thrusting and sweeping. His firearms had degenerated into melee weapons— he had run out of bullets and could only use his musket as a sword. He wasn’t particularly skilled in close combat, and he was gradually losing his strength.

“Xiao Ye, listen, you can’t die.”—Li Yuebai’s text message arrived again.

Despite being in the middle of a battle, this text message didn’t hinder him at all.

“Why?” Ye Qing was slightly puzzled.

He never thought that his life or death would have any impact on this world.

Could it still be because of that alliance?

“System, if I die, you should give Li Yuebai a chance to dissolve the alliance,” Ye Qing secretly asked the system.

“Hello, host’s ally, I am the new system, the Judge.” The Judge replied, “Yes, you and Li Yuebai previously formed an alliance, which included a contract— if one party dies, the other will also die. However, with the old system being shut down, this contract will become invalid. In other words, if one party dies, the other will not die with them.”

“Don’t worry.” Ye Qing sent another voice message to Li Yuebai: “The contract is invalid. If I die, you won’t die with me, so nothing will happen.”

That’s not what I meant— Li Yuebai was exasperated.

The moment the old system was shut down, Li Yuebai already knew that this contract of mutual annihilation would be canceled, so he wasn’t worried about that.

I meant that if you died, I would be completely unable to accept it emotionally— Li Yuebai sent.

“Emotionally?”

Yes, if you died, I would despair. —Li Yuebai wrote it clearly.

“Hmm.” Ye Qing smiled helplessly: “But you can’t save me.”

Save me— Li Yuebai said this with great confidence.

“Okay.” Ye Qing didn’t think much of it and focused intently on the battle before him.

“Tell me when you feel you can’t take it anymore, I’ll figure something out,” Li Yuebai sent his final message.

“I don’t know what you’re still struggling for.” New writing appeared on the parchment: “Ye Qing won’t last long. You’ll soon witness his death. Or should I let you see it more clearly?”

Li Yuebai didn’t answer, only letting out a cold laugh.

“If you surrender to me now, I might consider letting Ye Qing go.”

Surrender meant willingly destroying one’s own heart, becoming Gao Chengyu’s vila experiment, letting him use him to research methods to control vampires and consolidate his power.

“No.” Li Yuebai wrote each word with a flourish.

“What hypocrisy. You keep saying you don’t want him to die, yet you’re unwilling to sacrifice yourself for him. Hilariously hypocritical.”

Li Yuebai didn’t respond to his provocation, determined to remain unmoved.

To save Ye Qing, he was willing to try a thousand methods, but none of them included— surrendering to the opponent. That would be tantamount to defeat without a fight, a solution the world would never accept, and Ye Qing would not accept it either.

Li Yuebai didn’t intend to remain submerged in the deep pond. He swam slowly towards the shore, touching the damp grass and moss.

After an unknown amount of time, Ye Qing’s voice echoed in his heart:

“Li Yuebai.”

Ye Qing had only called his name once.

Just hearing those three words was enough for Li Yuebai to lose all patience.

If Ye Qing had even the slightest chance of victory, he wouldn’t have sought his help.

In other words, Ye Qing was in grave danger.

Li Yuebai drew the last small knife from his pocket, climbed out of the deep pond, stepped onto land, and headed towards the battlefield.
