Cheng Jia sat behind the dilapidated dining table, the flickering light bulb casting an orange glow. In the kitchen not far away, a woman’s figure was chopping something on the cutting board.

Although it seemed normal, each sound sent shivers down Cheng Jia’s spine, not to mention the eerie chill that had permeated the area, as if something might suddenly emerge from the surrounding darkness.

His face was so pale he looked like he was about to faint, his hand gripping the talisman tightly. If it weren’t for Master Gu’s talisman, he might have already passed out from fright.

Cheng Jia wanted to escape, but he couldn’t; his body felt fixed there, waiting to die.

How had things turned out this way?! It was supposed to be his first time going home with Master Gu, his first time meeting Master Gu’s other relatives— two wonderful things combined— why was it so terrifying?!

The next moment, the woman turned around and slowly walked towards him. Her face was completely black, and she was holding a plate of gruesome, bloody mess in her hands, occasionally letting out eerie laughter.

“Ahhhhh—” Cheng Jia screamed in terror, “Auntie, don’t come any closer!! Although you’re Master Gu’s mother, and I respect you, I think you don’t need to be so polite!!”

The woman was completely unmoved by his words. As the bloody, almost pixelated dish drew closer, Cheng Jia nearly fainted.

The next instant, the door to the room was pushed open.

Cheng Jia’s voice, filled with joyful tears, rang out, “Master Gu!!”

….

The reason things turned out this way was because the two of them had come to this city earlier.

It was rare for a young master like Cheng Jia to come to such a small place, and everything felt new and exciting. However, both of them were prominent figures, and to avoid trouble, they kept a very low profile, not even driving their luxury cars, and simply arrived at Gu Wuji’s childhood home.

Considering Austin’s striking blond appearance, which was bound to attract attention, Gu Wuji simply kept it in his pocket watch.

Gu Wuji was dressed in clothes that almost completely covered his face and wore sunglasses that obscured the upper half. This bizarre attire, if not for his exceptional demeanor, would likely have led him to the police station as a suspicious individual.

Gu Wuji, with Cheng Jia in tow, stepped into the familiar neighborhood, both deeply troubled.

“Master Gu, did you grow up in a place like this?” Cheng Jia looked at the dilapidated neighborhood and fell silent. It wasn’t just dilapidated; it was filled with an eerie, haunted atmosphere, with hardly anyone around.

More importantly, seeing this place, it seemed like a miracle that Master Gu had become such a kind person.

“It’s nothing to worry about. Everyone here is quite friendly,” Gu Wuji said casually.

Cheng Jia: “…” As expected of Master Gu.

Then, Gu Wuji suddenly realized something he hadn’t considered before: why had he never thought of having his parents leave this place?

No matter how he thought about it, Gu Wuji couldn’t believe he was such a scoundrel. And why hadn’t his family ever been harassed by the media? Given how these media outlets had previously tried to dig up everything about him, they hadn’t mentioned his past at all.

“It can’t be that those people had a change of heart. Could it be that even this part of my memory is wrong?”

This made Gu Wuji nervous. He hurriedly tried to go inside but was naturally stopped at the gate.

After Gu Wuji revealed his true identity, the old security guard who had worked there for many years showed no excitement at seeing such an important person, only astonishment and fear. “Why did you come back?”

“I just wanted to find someone, my parents,” Gu Wuji said.

The old security guard’s face turned extremely ugly. He said in a low voice, “What are you saying? Xiao Gu, for the sake of having watched you grow up, I advise you to leave this place and never come back. This place is too eerie!”

Gu Wuji’s expression changed, but no matter how he asked, the old guard wouldn’t budge. Cheng Jia, standing nearby, immediately took out a wad of cash and placed it in front of the security guard. The old guard was surprised for a moment, then, remembering his own difficult family situation, he could only sigh, accept the money, and tell him everything he knew.

Gu Wuji had lived alone in this neighborhood; no one had ever seen his parents, only that strange noises often emanated from his seemingly empty apartment.

Moreover, Gu Wuji wasn’t an orphan; everything around him seemed to be arranged, whether at school or in daily life, but no one could figure out who was responsible, which was utterly baffling.

Most terrifyingly, Gu Wuji himself was also strange, often speaking to unseen entities, frightening others and leading to his ostracization. Those who openly expressed their dislike for Gu Wuji would eventually move away hastily, as if the mere mention of his name carried a deep psychological scar.

After Gu Wuji’s kidnapping, everything became extremely bizarre; everyone else was unharmed, while the kidnappers died gruesome deaths, a truly terrifying sight.

No one told Gu Wuji about these things at the time, as if nothing had ever happened. After Gu Wuji left, many people breathed a sigh of relief, feeling they could finally return to normal life.

However, the neighborhood didn’t quiet down; ghost stories continued to occur from time to time. Gu Wuji’s original residence remained haunted, and no one dared to move in; even most of the residents of that building had already moved out.

This was because the neighborhood was in a remote and old location, and it might be demolished soon. If Gu Wuji had returned any later, it might already be a ruin.

“I didn’t want to tell you this,” the old security guard sighed after speaking, “but now that you’re grown up, you should know. From the beginning, your parents never existed… If this isn’t a problem with some aspect of you,” he trailed off, after all, Gu Wuji didn’t seem like someone with mental problems, “then, they… are ghosts.”

Having experienced too much in this neighborhood, the old security guard still believed in such things.

Cheng Jia was completely dumbfounded. His brother’s information hadn’t mentioned this at all! Was Master Gu actually raised by ghosts? No wonder his attitude towards ghosts was so warm and gentle…

“Okay, thank you.” Gu Wuji nodded, thanking him sincerely. “I understand everything now.”

“Are you still going in?” The old security guard looked at him in astonishment.

“There are some things I need to know.” Gu Wuji said, turning and walking inside. Cheng Jia hurriedly followed.

At this moment, behind a tree outside the residential area, a figure was also watching this scene, his expression one of utter shock.

“Master Gu, did you only just understand the truth?” Cheng Jia couldn’t help but want to comfort Gu Wuji. After all, even Master Gu would be greatly affected by something like this. “It’s alright. I think your parents must have been kind ghosts, otherwise they couldn’t have raised such a gentle person as Master Gu.”

“That’s what I thought too.” Surprisingly, Gu Wuji didn’t seem too concerned about the matter. He spoke firmly, “Actually, I realized a while ago that something seemed off. Now that I know the truth, I’m relieved, as long as they’re alright. Whether they’re human or ghost, I don’t care. I only know they will always be my parents.”

However, if his parents really lost their lives because of his problem, that would be something Gu Wuji couldn’t accept.

“So let’s go back together. I’ll introduce them to you.” Gu Wuji smiled at Cheng Jia, “Introduce my friend.”

“Master Gu!!” Cheng Jia was utterly flattered, tears welling up in his eyes! He felt he could die without regrets. Did Austin or Cheng Liangmiao receive the same treatment as him? Did they even get Master Gu’s friend card?

The two walked forward and soon entered the most eerie building in the neighborhood. The building was incredibly old, with ivy clinging to the walls like veins of blood, making Cheng Jia’s legs tremble.

“It’s alright, I’m going to see Master Gu’s parents!” Cheng Jia reassured herself. “There definitely won’t be any problems.”

“Although there are many ghosts here, they are all very nice people. They’ve helped me a lot before.” Gu Wuji said as he pushed open the door, and the two walked into the dusty building. The ground was littered with garbage, and it looked extremely dilapidated.

Cheng Jia almost couldn’t breathe when they entered. Gu Wuji, however, was somewhat dazed. Suddenly, a scene flashed into his mind: he was running in the corridor, chasing someone playfully in front of him.

Although it was just a fragment, and he didn’t even know who the person was, it made him feel a kind of joy in his heart. He must have been very happy then.

Cheng Jia suddenly grabbed Gu Wuji’s hand and said nervously, “Master Gu, I think I saw that door being pushed open! Ahhh!!”

Gu Wuji turned his head and saw a large door in the dimly lit corridor moving without any wind. It seemed that the sound of crying could be faintly heard from inside, and a half-hidden shadow seemed to be hidden in the darkness.

Cheng Jia: “Master Gu, what is that sound?!”

“It’s nothing, just Aunt Wang’s ghost watching a melodramatic TV series, and it’s too hot, so she opened the door for ventilation.”

Cheng Jia: “…” Why does it feel so sad?! And Master Gu really has the aura of seeing familiar neighbors.

….

“Then what’s going on! Something’s moving in the trash!”

“Sigh, after all, she’s an old lady. Even in death, she wants to find something useful in the trash. Let’s go up and help her.”

Gu Wuji was very enthusiastic towards these familiar ghosts, after all, they were all acquaintances of his.

….

“Master Gu, the light bulb suddenly turned on!!”

“Oh, why don’t you thank the person who fixed the light for us?”

Cheng Jia: “…”

….

Gu Wuji and the other person had already gone up several floors.

At this moment, a person sneaked into the first-floor hallway, revealing a sinister smile as they looked up.

“Gu Wuji, I didn’t expect you to come back.”

He carefully wiped away the dust on the ground, revealing slightly messy patterns on the surface. No matter how you looked at it, it was some kind of eerie formation indicated by blood.

“Since that’s the case, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”

….

By the time the two arrived at their destination, Cheng Jia had gone numb. After all, these ghosts were far too harmless! Aside from giving you a fright, there was no danger whatsoever.

More than that, he should probably tidy himself up, lest he embarrass himself in front of Master Gu’s parents!

Cheng Jia took a deep breath and nervously began to tidy his appearance, not wanting Gu Wuji’s parents to see him in such a disheveled state.

Meanwhile, Gu Wuji familiarly retrieved his key from a groove in the wall, and with a touch of nostalgia, opened the dilapidated door, making a loud, unsettling noise as he pushed it open.

Cheng Jia suddenly saw Gu Wuji’s body seem to be swallowed by darkness the moment he stepped inside, disappearing before his eyes.

Cheng Jia: “?!?”
