The speaker meant no harm, but the listener took it to heart. Qing Lan simply described the effects of different death energies on him, but Bai Ju and Xiao Yao found a breakthrough in this simple sentence.

In fact, Bai Ju and Xiao Yao were clearly not very professional about the methods of cultivating flying corpses. Even though Bai Ju had so many strange cultivation techniques in his inventory, none of them mentioned the differences in the effects of death energies; this was because death energies were too special, only appearing on the dying and the dead. Once they appeared on a living person and the person’s lifespan did not match the state of the death energies, it could only mean that the person’s condition was abnormal and that they had been cursed. First, the death energy was removed, which led most sorcerers and demons to broadly categorize death energy into two forms: “normal” and “abnormal.”

However, for demons like Qing Lan who primarily used death energy as their cultivation resource, each had its own preferences. Simply put, the higher the overlap between the nature of the death energy and the direction of cultivation, the better the effect.

As a high-level flying corpse, Qing Lan should be a master of death energy identification.

In other words, Qing Lan could obtain far more information from death energy than they could.

Bai Ju and Xiao Yao exchanged a knowing glance, and Old Dog Bai simply stepped forward and asked, “Qing Lan, can you find any clues in this mass of death energy?”

Qing Lan didn’t quite understand: “Clues…”

Bai Ju explained, “This thing was artificially implanted into a living person’s body. Can you identify the implantation method or the operator?”

Qing Lan frowned, holding the mass of death energy, and said disapprovingly, “Injecting death energy into a living person, no, that’s not good.”

Qing Lan, the Corpse-Flying One, had a very upright moral compass. After understanding what Bai Ju and Xiao Yao needed him to do, he nodded and said seriously, ‘Qing Lan will do his best. We might find clues, but not necessarily the person behind it.’

Bai Ju tried to translate what Qing Lan meant: ‘You mean, we can find some related special agents, but we can’t directly find the person behind it?’

Qing Lan nodded: ‘Yes…yes.’

After a pause, Qing Lan added: ‘Strangers, too many auras, I don’t recognize them, I can’t distinguish them.’

Xiao Yao immediately pressed: ‘What if the person who cast the spell is right in front of you? Can you tell?’

Qing Lan pursed his lips, looked at Bai Ju’s eyes somewhat helplessly, and slowly nodded: ‘Y-yes.’

Bai Ju reached out and patted Qing Lan’s head: ‘Alright, remember the aura and characteristics of this deathly energy before you absorb it. Next time the culprit appears in front of you, you must tell me or Director Xiao immediately, understand?'”

Qing Lan could only nod, and after a long while, he finally replied with a “Okay.”

This guy was too nervous.

Bai Ju and Xiao Yao kept asking questions, which added immense pressure to Qing Lan, making him even more nervous and at a loss.

He needed some space.

Bai Ju tugged at Xiao Yao’s hand, then turned around, gesturing for him to climb on his back: “Come on, Yaoyao, I’ll take you down.”

Xiao Yao had been carried before, so he easily wrapped his arms around Bai Ju’s neck and was lifted up effortlessly. Bai Ju tugged at Xiao Yao’s bottom, reminding him to “hold on tight,” and then led him down the hillside.

“Aren’t we going back to Haiyin Castle?” Xiao Yao, perched on the white dog’s back, raised an eyebrow in confusion.

“We’ll go to Haiyin Castle later.” Bai Ju weaved through the branches of the trees. “We still have some time now, I’ll take you to find fireflies.”

Xiao Yao was led astray by Old Dog Bai’s train of thought. After a moment of silence, he recalled the time when he and Bai Ju first arrived on the island to watch the parade. Old Dog Bai had used magic to conjure fireflies, and he had teased him about it.

He couldn’t help but poke Bai Ju’s cheek with his finger and said with a smile, “Still thinking about it?”

Bai Ju curled his lips: “Yeah, things conjured by magic aren’t real after all… There were too many people watching the parade, you didn’t see the fireflies at their most beautiful.”

Xiao Yao was easily charmed by Old Dog Bai. It was a rather girlish romantic gesture, but Bai Ju had presented it to him, and he felt his heart bubbling with pink bubbles.

Trying to suppress his excitement, Xiao Yao deliberately retorted, “When I was little, I studied Taoism and spent some time in the mountains. I’ve seen swarms of fireflies.”

Old Dog Bai, however, wasn’t discouraged at all. He snorted lightly, even with a hint of smugness: “That’s different. You didn’t have me by your side back then.”

Xiao Yao: “…”

Damn, that makes sense.

Seeing that Xiao Yao didn’t reply, Bai Ju knew that this guy was just being stubborn; he was actually really looking forward to watching fireflies with him.

Fortunately, the central ridge of Turtle Island was largely untouched due to its rugged terrain and lack of development. Aside from the occasional intrusion of Turtle Island residents picking wildflowers and other mountain delicacies, this ridge remained largely unaffected. Furthermore, Turtle Island had a stable climate with indistinct seasons, meaning Bai Ju could find the fireflies he was looking for year-round, though more abundant in summer and sparse in winter.

At this moment, Turtle Island was… In early summer, as Bai Ju followed a stream into the depths of the forest in the valley, tiny, shimmering green lights gradually appeared around him.

Xiao Yao looked up; the mountain was undisturbed year-round, and many of the trees were ancient and tall. Even though they hadn’t gone very far, the intertwined branches already blocked out most of the sky.

The moonlight and lamplight were filtered through the foliage, and the light in the forest gradually dimmed, making the fireflies’ glow all the more striking.

Bai Ju was right; fireflies were indeed most beautiful in the darkness, with just the two of them.

Old Dog Bai said… He wanted to show him fireflies, but this old dog was, after all, a demon king, and wouldn’t let him simply watch fireflies in a natural setting. So, as Xiao Yao was looking at the sky, a dark cloud quietly covered the gaps between the branches and leaves.

Blinking, Xiao Yao was both amused and exasperated; the legendary Black Wind Demon Cloud had been used by the old white dog to block out the light.

Bai Ju’s eyesight wasn’t affected by the darkness. He looked down and found some protruding tree roots, nimbly stepping towards the stream. After a few steps, he found a smooth, large rock, casually cast a spell, and cleared it away.

He lowered his head… Bai Ju gently placed Xiao Yao on a rock and sat down beside him, his long legs bending low.
