The midday sun was intense, but dappled sunlight filtered through the lush trees, creating a cool yet warm atmosphere that was pleasant for both body and mind.
Si Huang helped Grandma Yu walk slowly along the man-made mountain path, her gaze sweeping over the surroundings. She hadn’t expected the so-called “grand courtyard” to occupy an entire mountain area.
The car was parked below; they had been walking for about twenty minutes.
Of course, this was to match Grandma Yu’s pace.
“Almost there,” Qin Fan said, turning his head and meeting her gaze.
Si Huang nodded, about to speak, when she saw a tall figure approaching.
“A Fan!”
That voice?
Si Huang’s eyes flashed as she carefully examined the woman who had quickly walked up to her.
Judging by her face, she was probably around twenty-five or twenty-six years old, but her skin was delicate and fair, and her features refined— a classic beauty. Her beautiful, silky black hair added to her allure. She wore a casual, unisex two-piece Tang suit. The white fabric was dappled with light, looking very clean. The trousers reached her knees, revealing her beautifully shaped calves, which seemed a meter long. She must have been over 1.7 meters tall.
“I missed you so much!” Pei Ziwen walked over and gave Qin Fan a hug. “If you hadn’t come back, I would have thought you were dead out there.”
“Pah, pah, pah, how can you talk like that, Xiao Ziwen?” Grandma Yu scolded with a laugh.
Pei Ziwen turned and hugged Grandma Yu back. “I was just kidding. Grandma Yu, you know I can’t bear to see A Fan die.” Glancing to the side, she saw Si Huang.
Si Huang felt a sudden sharpness in her gaze, as if she had instantly assessed her entire body, inside and out, leaving no cell unchecked. Most people would probably be frightened by such a gaze.
It was so fast that most people would hardly notice it.
“Hello, my name is Pei Ziwen. I’ve heard of you before. Since you’re Grandma Yu’s adopted grandson and A Fan’s brother, you can call me ‘sister’ from now on.” Pei Ziwen smiled, her posture suggesting she was about to give Si Huang a hug.
A hand grabbed her collar, preventing her from successfully hugging Si Huang.
“Don’t try anything with her.”
“Huh?” Pei Ziwen stared at Qin Fan in surprise.
Si Huang’s gaze fell on Pei Ziwen’s loose sleeve. “A syringe.”
Even though it was only a fleeting glimpse, she still caught the needle mark on the woman’s hand when she tried to hug her.
“Good eye.” Pei Ziwen looked innocent, patting Qin Fan’s arm. “Let go, it’s just to draw some blood, it won’t hurt him.”
Qin Fan released her as instructed and said to Si Huang, “It’s a bad habit she developed; she does this to anyone she’s interested in upon first meeting.”
“Hmm.” Si Huang greeted Pei Ziwen calmly, “Hello. I don’t like it when people do this to me without my consent, so please don’t do it again.”
“Hahaha.” Pei Ziwen laughed and nudged Qin Fan with her elbow. “No wonder you raised him, he’s just like you.”
Qin Fan blocked her bump expressionlessly and said to Si Huang, “Don’t be polite to her, just treat her like a man.”
“Xiao Qilin, you’re wrong to say that.” Grandma Yu glared at him disapprovingly.
Pei Ziwen herself didn’t care. “A Fan is right.”
From their brief time together, Si Huang could sense that their relationship was familiar and trustworthy.
“Alright, I came down to pick you up. Grandma Xiang and Grandpa Qin are already waiting.”
….
After walking slowly for another ten minutes, Si Huang finally saw the gate of a courtyard house. A sturdy man in military uniform stood guard at the entrance. Judging by the length of the wall, it was impossible to tell how big the courtyard house was, but it was definitely not small; it could be described as an ancient mansion.
The interior decoration was also very antique; without careful observation, one would feel as if they had stumbled into ancient times, a distortion of time.
Thinking of this, Si Huang suddenly remembered the time she had a long phone conversation with Qin Fan last Chinese New Year.
The man was wearing an outer garment that looked like an ancient robe, and he looked extremely sexy.
Feeling a weight on her shoulder, Si Huang turned her head and saw Qin Fan’s face leaning towards her. “What is it?”
“Don’t think too much.” Qin Fan put his arm around her shoulder and whispered in her ear.
The volume was so low that no one else could hear it, not even Pei Ziwen’s curious glance.
Si Huang shook her head, replying in the same soft voice, “I wasn’t thinking.”
“You’ve been spacing out since just now,” Qin Fan interrupted.
“Just thinking about last year’s New Year.” Actually, there was something else, but she didn’t want to say it.
This made Qin Fan’s expression pause, his tense and cold features softening slightly. “The hot springs are in the back; I’ll take you there tonight.”
Si Huang scrutinized his face, wondering if there was something else behind his words, but she couldn’t discern anything from the man’s handsome face.
“What’s wrong?” Not getting an answer from her, Qin Fan asked.
Si Huang’s gaze moved from his face to his body, a teasing glint in her eyes, and she smiled, “Okay.”
“You two, watch yourselves!” Old Tie’s low shout suddenly rang out.
Seeing his stern face, Si Huang pushed Qin Fan’s arm off her shoulder; it was quite heavy.
The man didn’t move.
Grandma Yu glared at Old Tie instead, “What are you yelling about? Xiao Qilin and Xiao Huang are on good terms, what can you do about it!”
Old Tie: “…”
Seeing his depressed look, even Si Huang couldn’t help but laugh, finding it particularly amusing.
Her laughter earned her a cold stare from Old Tie, a look that said, “I can’t stand you but I can’t do anything about it,” making it impossible for Si Huang to suppress her smile.
“They’re really on good terms.” Pei Ziwen interjected, “It’s the first time I’ve seen A Fan put his arm around someone’s shoulder.”
Hearing this, Si Huang met Pei Ziwen’s probing gaze thoughtfully.
The two didn’t stare at each other for long before Pei Ziwen raised an eyebrow and looked away, thinking about the warning look Qin Fan had given her earlier, feeling that something was amiss.
