Time returned to the present.

After Gu Wuji uttered those words, the scene fell into silence, even the eerie wind outside stopped.

After all, those words were simply too shocking.

Just then, the system’s voice suddenly rang out.

[Hidden Quest Triggered: Break the Village’s Curse.]

Gu Wuji was relieved to hear the system’s words; it seemed that the path he had chosen was feasible. Of course, even without this prompt, Gu Wuji would not have changed his mind about doing such a thing.

The young man was stunned for a moment, looking at Gu Wuji in surprise, the coldness on his face dissipating considerably.

Although he harbored resentment because Gu Wuji had abandoned him, and had even been sealed away by the villagers, only recently awakening.

But deep down, he still really liked Gu Wuji; otherwise, why would he still be holding that umbrella… and occasionally circling around where Gu Wuji appeared to scare away other ghosts, as if afraid that Gu Wuji wouldn’t find him before being killed by these sacrificial ghosts.

Originally, the young man couldn’t wait to meet Gu Wuji when he first arrived in the village, but he felt that would make him seem too unrefined, so he just pretended to be profound. Seeing Gu Wuji running around the village for his sake made him quite happy.

Although he wanted revenge on Gu Wuji, he only wanted Gu Wuji to have a slight regret and stay there forever with him. He didn’t think about anything else, let alone cruelly killing Gu Wuji.

If the other sacrificial ghosts knew that the boss suppressing them had always had such pure thoughts, they would probably be speechless.

As soon as Gu Wuji said this, the young man instantly forgot the hatred of the past few decades. He no longer thought about revenge and wished he could run away with Gu Wuji. But he couldn’t help but mutter, “How can you possibly do such a thing?”

Gu Wuji felt that although this guy had grown into a handsome man, his mentality didn’t seem to have changed much… In short, he probably wouldn’t be thinking about getting gay with him after growing up! Speaking of which, although Gu Wuji’s appearance was different from reality, if it were an ordinary person, they would at most feel a little familiar and wouldn’t realize it was the same person. But for these vengeful ghosts, they seemed to see through the essence to the soul, so disguise was useless.

Gu Wuji spoke directly: “Since I promised you, of course I will keep my promise. I abandoned you back then only because the time wasn’t right. Now it’s time for me to take you away!”

“But this is too dangerous.” The young man looked at Gu Wuji, his expression complex, full of anticipation but also afraid to do it. “You can’t leave this village, and you can’t take me with you. You will die, and your soul will be trapped here forever.” Although he had planned to do the same, the thought of having Gu Wuji’s soul stay with him forever felt too cruel.

“Of course I have a way.” Gu Wuji’s tone was very firm. He pulled him quickly to the coffin, took a deep breath, and whispered: “I already know. You are also a part of this village’s bondage.” The other party was probably truly a mountain god protecting this village, but the village probably had bad feng shui, which led to the legendary ungrateful villagers even trying to kill him, and even using the power of some extraordinary master.

Of course, this was impossible. The god wasn’t dead, but it was affected, transformed into a monster by the villagers’ malice, and thus cursed the village.

It was an integral part of the village, nourishing all its inhabitants, but the curse within them prevented them from ever leaving, binding them generation after generation. That was the monster Xiao Qin had seen above the village in his memories. Gu Wuji’s escape enraged the then-young man, implicating the monster and causing a cataclysmic event.

The young man was essentially the monster’s core, the discarded emotional part, but he couldn’t control the monster itself.

He possessed power but couldn’t fight himself, nor could he leave the village on his own— a constraint imposed by the village.

No one could ever see or communicate with him; he had been alone since birth until he met Gu Wuji.

In short, the village’s curse was inescapable. Therefore, by the time the truth was discovered, the player had already completed the main quest and could leave.

Gu Wuji had already made up his mind to free the villagers from the curse. The first thing he needed to do was take the young man away, so that the monster in the village would lose its power and thus be unable to maintain its existence.

“What do you want to do?” The young man looked at Gu Wuji. Because the other man’s will was very firm, he began to have confidence in leaving the village. “I can’t leave this village on my own. As long as I have that thought, it will be difficult to act… And that monster is also a part of me. If it chases after me, I can’t stop that power.”

“That is indeed a problem.” Gu Wuji nodded. “So we have to keep it from the monster, so that it can’t find out that we are going to run away. And if I’m not mistaken, it should still be in a deep sleep and hasn’t fully awakened yet.”

“What?” The young man was stunned. He himself didn’t know how to keep it from his other half.

“I discovered this coffin before; it should be able to conceal the aura inside. Those vengeful ghosts were completely undetectable before they came out.” Gu Wuji placed his hand on the open coffin, looked at the young man, and said, enunciating each word clearly, “What we need to do next is simple: you lie down in the coffin, and I’ll carry it away.”

If anyone else were present, they would be utterly shocked, finding the suggestion absurd. How could it be simple?

But coming from Gu Wuji, it inspired conviction, making it seem like doing it this way would be foolproof.

Even the village chief, who had previously hated Gu Wuji to the core and wanted to cruelly torture him to death, was persuaded; let alone the young man who now harbored pure feelings for Gu Wuji, he immediately nodded.

….

“Is Brother Gu alright?” Xiao Qin asked worriedly.

Although they already knew Gu Wuji’s real name was Sun Shi, Xiao Qin still used that name, feeling a sense of intimacy with Gu Wuji.

Of course, they also realized that this was probably Gu Wuji’s real surname.

“Don’t think too much about it. I think even if we all die, he’ll be fine.” Yang Shao said this, but his expression was actually worried. “He hasn’t returned the item to me yet, so of course he has to come out alive.”

After all, Gu Wuji wasn’t going to see those ordinary sacrificial ghosts, but the real ghost boss of this dungeon. The difference in strength was definitely not just one or two times.

So Yang Shao had forcefully stuffed his red dress item into Gu Wuji’s hands, demanding that the other party return it to him later. Even knowing that this might mean the item wouldn’t come back, as long as it could increase Gu Wuji’s chances of survival, it would be fine. He never thought that one day he would do something that helped others but didn’t benefit him at all.

“That’s a bit too unlucky to say.” The other players couldn’t help but speak up. “Let’s hurry up. I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen.”

At this time, everyone was on their way out of the tunnel on the mountain. They still had to pass through the village to reach the outside world… Only at this point did everyone realize that this dilapidated village was actually quite large.

As for the village chief and the other vengeful ghosts, they had long since vanished. The villagers, who had previously appeared numb, remained in the cave; it was unlikely they would come out to cause any trouble.

The ghosts of the two bodyguards, however, had been taken away by Yang Shao, who could use them as shields should any danger arise on the road. The bodyguards were filled with regret; they had thought becoming ghosts would bring them peace, but who knew that in this village, people were more terrifying than ghosts! Of course, the fact that the most terrifying person, Gu Wuji, wasn’t there was the most comforting thing.

Undoubtedly, the village was now extremely dangerous. Even without leaving, one could see a terrifying behemoth composed of black mist slumbering above the village, seemingly with countless wandering ghosts wailing within it; just staring at it was enough to send chills down one’s spine.

“What exactly is this monster? This dungeon is definitely not easy,” one person said with lingering fear. “Luckily, we don’t need to confront it head-on; we just need to escape quickly.”

“Stop talking nonsense, let’s deal with these monsters.”

The village was now completely overrun by bizarre monsters of all shapes and sizes. The fog was so thick that the roads were almost invisible, creating a scene of utter hell. No living people were visible outside, and it was impossible to tell if they were alive or dead.

“This is terrifying! After today, this village will probably become an even more terrifying dungeon.”

Even though these monsters weren’t particularly strong, they were incredibly difficult to deal with, taking forever to kill. Their sheer number was causing the players considerable distress, as they lacked Gu Wuji’s purification abilities.

They had to leave the village before the black fog monsters fully awakened, and with time already tight, dealing with so many monsters made everyone tense, as if they were back in the arduous journey of other world dungeons.

At this point, they couldn’t help but miss Gu Wuji. Being with him before was so much easier, like a leisurely trip to a rural resort, not some high-level dungeon.

Unfortunately, Gu Wuji’s fate was now unknown. Going to such a strange place to encounter vengeful ghosts— the thought of returning was too much to bear.

Just as everyone was struggling to deal with the monster, heavy footsteps suddenly came from behind, startling them.

“What’s coming? Judging from the noise, it must be some huge monster.”

Even the smaller monsters that had been fighting them seemed to sense something fearful and all turned and fled. This made everyone even more anxious.

“Everyone be careful! A terrifying monster is coming!”

Everyone took a deep breath, warily waiting for the enormous creature in the mist to approach, their tools ready to be thrown— and then they saw Gu Wuji carrying a black coffin with nonchalant ease.

Gu Wuji even looked quite relaxed, as if the black coffin was no burden at all, and looked at everyone in surprise, “You’re all still here? Have you all been waiting for me? I’m so touched…”

Everyone: “…”

Everyone: “??”
