The Zombie King could only control the dead, while the Puppet Master could control the living. Duan Min, known as the Puppet Master of Fate, could control both the dead and the living.
However, he had always disliked the presence of the living, thus usually killing people before controlling them.
But in the end, he couldn’t bear to let You Xu die.
After a whole night, Duan Min calmed down completely. He sat facing You Xu on his large black bed in his bedroom, carefully recalling his previous emotions. His heart was constantly being pumped with blood, experiencing shortness of breath and chest tightness, his heart rate was unstable. It was a reaction he had never had before.
And the unconscious act of opening the window and seeing her and a man drive away in a car, only to be driven back downstairs by that man, made him inexplicably irritable and easily angered, with a hint of barely perceptible unease.
He had his puppets monitor them, and when he learned that they always ate together while he could only wait silently at home, his heart felt tight and heavy.
Duan Min kept reminding himself that You Xu was a normal person, different from him. She should have her own life and social circle, and he had no right to interfere.
But last night, when he watched her carefully dressed, her makeup exquisite, leaving again with that man in a car, his throat tightened and a lump formed in his throat. For the first time in five years, he went downstairs and waited from six in the evening until one in the morning before she returned, this time with that man again.
They leaned against each other in the distance, You Xu smiling at that man. Duan Min realized that she could smile like that at anyone, no different from her usual smile at him.
The intimate scene in the distance and this new realization completely overwhelmed Duan Min’s rationality, causing his pent-up emotions to erupt like a tidal wave.
Only two thoughts occupied his mind: one was to kill that man, and the other was to make You Xu his complete puppet, someone who could only eat with him, only smile at him, only be close to him.
She belonged only to him.
This thought grew wildly, impossible to sever.
A sharp pain shot through Duan Min’s heart because You Xu stood on the opposite side of him, protecting that man, preventing him from hurting the person she cared about.
She clearly heard it all— that the man only had inappropriate thoughts about her— yet she still chose to be with him, leaving him aside.
That man was so cared for by her.
Duan Min was in so much pain.
No wonder; she already knew his identity, knew he was a monster, vastly different from ordinary people, now she would fear him, hate him, and then distance herself from him.
She would never cook for him again, never smile at him again.
The feeling of betrayal fuelled Duan Min’s rage, but in the rage’s backlash, he also felt an inexplicable sense of grievance.
He had been abandoned.
When Duan Min pointed the scalpel at You Xu, his fingertips touched her body heat, and he couldn’t bring himself to do it. If he turned her into an inanimate object, she would lose her warmth.
He couldn’t do it.
Duan Min looked at You Xu, sitting quietly before him, still wearing yesterday’s pale yellow strapless dress, revealing her beautiful collarbone and delicate arms.
She seemed to particularly like bright colors, unlike him.
One was a person who lived in the sunlight, while the other was a monster accustomed only to the dark swamp. What should he do? He could only drag her down into the mire as well.
Duan Min, who sat quietly on the bed for a long time with his eyes lowered, finally made a move. His gaze swept down from You Xu’s neck, then he got up and found a damp handkerchief to wipe her neck. His movements were gentle, wiping carefully again and again.
He had made that man slam his face against the wall simply because that man had pressed his face against her neck.
His movements were very gentle, but You Xu’s delicate skin turned red from the back and forth wiping. He reached out and caressed her slightly red neck for a while, then he lowered his gaze to her left hand, and then wiped her left hand, which had been kissed by Zhao Yiyan, several times.
He held her left hand, looked at it silently for a few seconds, then lowered his head and placed a light kiss on the back of her hand.
“You’re mine now.”
Duan Min smiled, reaching out to pat her head, then tracing her cheek with his fingertips, his eyes smiling, his gaze focused, his movements gentle and slow, like a child caressing a beloved toy. His thumb lingered on the corner of her lips. “You should smile now.”
You Xu obeyed, stiffly curving her lips.
“Yes,” Duan Min smiled, “you should smile even more happily.”
You Xu’s eyes were vacant, but she obediently stretched the curve of her lips wider, revealing two small dimples.
“Yes, like that,” Duan Min couldn’t help but gently poke those dimples with his finger, “smile like that only for me from now on.”
You Xu couldn’t answer yes or no, she could only do it.
Duan Min checked the time and said to her, “It’s breakfast time, go make breakfast.”
You Xu obediently got out of bed and followed Duan Min to the kitchen, but he only then realized that his kitchen was completely empty, after all it was a place that had always been used as decoration.
The kitchen at You Xu’s house was fully equipped, but he didn’t want her to step out of his doorstep again; he wanted her to stay there with him forever.
So Duan Min had no choice but to instruct the puppet to buy kitchen utensils and ingredients. Everything was ready by almost noon. You Xu entered the kitchen, mechanically picking up ingredients to wash and prepare to chop vegetables.
Duan Min watched from the side, feeling uneasy. Before, You Xu’s cooking was always comforting; her movements cheerful, her face smiling, and she would unconsciously hum a little tune, sharing her joy with those watching.
But now, she washed vegetables expressionlessly, each movement stiff as if she were merely following instructions, devoid of any pleasure.
Duan Min frowned slightly: “You should be happy, smile.”
You Xu smiled, placed the washed pork on the cutting board, and picked up a knife to begin chopping.
“Stop,” Duan Min suddenly said.
You Xu stopped, the knife hovering in mid-air.
He strode over and snatched the cleaver from her hand. After she made a few cuts, Duan Min smelled blood. He went over and saw that she had indeed cut her left index finger. Fortunately, he had given the command quickly, and it only broke the skin, drawing only a small bead of blood.
Controlling someone else’s body with one’s mind was definitely less agile than having someone control their body with their own will; this was why puppets were clumsy and lack fluidity.
Duan Min frowned even more, put her injured finger in his mouth, and licked the blood bead with his tongue. He then patiently waited for the blood to clot before releasing her.
“Go back and sit down, I’ll do it.”
