Ma Xiaoting was no longer the same person she had been before. Her hair seemed to have grown longer in an instant, cascading down like a waterfall. Her once pale lips had turned a bright red, and her limbs, like cold snakes, coiled around Li Yuebai.

Li Yuebai remained calm and motionless. “Who are you?”

“I’m the maid Ampsa.” Ma Xiaoting giggled, her laughter as mellow as pearls. “I only suck the blood of virgins.”

Virgins…

Why are singles always the unlucky ones? Li Yuebai protested silently in his heart.

“Do you want me to shoot?” Ye Qing’s voice echoed from behind him, along with the sound of a bullet being loaded.

This kid, always so reliable.

“No, wait a minute.” Although Li Yuebai was panicking, he remained calm.

“I knew you wouldn’t shoot,” the maid Ampsa said with a sweet smile. “This girl is innocent. If you shoot, she’ll die.”

Li Yuebai’s palms were covered in cold sweat.

This was the real dilemma. What should I do? What should I do?

“How about letting me suck your blood first…” Maid Ampsa grinned, two fangs emerging from among her white teeth. She then inched closer to Li Yuebai’s neck…

Li Yuebai couldn’t bear it any longer.

So he pulled out his left hand, hidden behind his back. In it lay a small plastic bag, brimming with an unknown, murky liquid.

The moment Ampsa lunged, Li Yuebai tore it open.

A strong-smelling, unknown liquid poured down, raining down on her head.

Ampsa froze.

“What…what is this!” she screamed hysterically.

“The sauce for the cold noodles, with double the amount of garlic.” Li Yuebai said, “It’s what vampires fear most. No wonder you wouldn’t eat it just now.”

She froze in place, her eyes rolled back, her face twitching. Her fangs shrank back to their normal size, and even her long hair shrank back!

She was rapidly returning to her original form!

At the same moment, a gunshot rang out. Ye Qing fired, the bullet passing an inch above Ma Xiaoting’s head.

Ma Xiaoting twitched violently, awakening.

“What’s going on?” She opened her hands in confusion and touched her hair, which was sticky with garlic juice.

Vampires, besides pure silver, were also afraid of garlic. To avoid the garlic’s corrosive effects, the maid Ampsa, had been forced to abandon Ma Xiaoting’s body and flee.

However, Ye Qing’s shot had struck the fleeing creature.

“Is it dead this time?” Li Yuebai turned to ask Ye Qing.

“Dead,” Ye Qing held up his phone. “I recorded a video, this time I hit on the right side.”

In the video, a black dormant form emerged from Ma Xiaoting’s head. Ye Qing’s bullet struck it in the right chest, causing it to burn and then explode.

The previous, seemingly successful shot had not only failed to kill the dormant form but had also given it an opportunity to feign death and secretly possess the unconscious Ma Xiaoting. The reason it survived was because the vampire’s heart was located on the right side. Out of human habit, Ye Qing chose the left side, which led to his failure.

“What… what’s going on? Was I really possessed? Are there really vampires?” Ma Xiaoting collapsed to the ground in despair. “How is that possible…”

Vampires preferred to possess those with weak mental strength. Ma Xiaoting had just suffered an emotional breakdown and was in a daze, making her an easy target. Perhaps it didn’t possess Xu Lili’s body because repairing the broken neck was too tiring, making Ma Xiaoting a better choice.

“Officer, was I dreaming just now?” Ma Xiaoting asked anxiously. “I felt like I had turned into a vampire, grabbing you, wanting to suck your blood…”

It seems that even after being possessed, humans can remain conscious, aware of what is happening, and remember it later.

Li Yuebai and Ye Qing exchanged a glance, realizing the gravity of the problem before them.

How should they answer her questions? How should they explain this case to the city police? How should they explain it to the public?

The easiest approach, of course, would be to lie to the girl and suppress the incident. Then, when reporting to their superiors, they could fabricate a story about a “murderer on the loose.” However, such a fabrication would be cumbersome. First, there was no trace of the murderer. Second, they had just fired several shots in the house, a highly suspicious and inexplicable act. Most importantly, if the murderer were still at large, rumors would quickly spread about “a brutal, decapitating killer on the loose, with the police helpless,” creating a panic no less terrifying than that caused by vampires.

If they reported the truth, the most likely consequence would be being labelled a psychopath.

Fortunately, their struggle didn’t last long.

According to this world’s setting, vampires would soon appear worldwide, slaughtering people en masse. The world would soon descend into a war between humans and vampires.

Ye Qing called the city police station, requesting support. A large force would arrive soon to take Xu Lili’s body for a detailed examination and then conduct a thorough investigation.

“Who’s leading the team?” Li Yuebai asked.

“Director Yang himself,” Ye Qing replied.

A home invasion and beheading tragedy, such a big thing, of course the leader had to come to the scene in person.

“Report the truth!” Li Yuebai thought about it and made a decision.

This war was bound to start. He and Ye Qing were probably among the first few people in the country to discover vampires. Most people would choose not to report it, and the later the report was made, the later the country would respond, and the more difficult the situation would become. For the sake of the overall situation, the sooner the report was made, the better, and the more truthful the better.

After completing all the procedures and returning to the bureau, it was already early morning of the next day.

Director Yang and the head of the bureau, Director Wang, looked at Ye Qing and Li Yuebai as if they were aliens and lunatics almost the entire time. After listening to their reports and reading the information they submitted.

“Ahem, Xiao Ye.” Director Yang stubbed out the cigarette in his hand, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, and scolded: “You guys usually joke with me, that’s fine, but you’re being so frivolous in front of Director Wang, how can you do that!”

Director Wang also picked up the teacup and took a sip, his brow furrowing: “This case is extremely serious in nature, and it is foreseeable that the social impact will be extremely wide. Our bureau must be prepared to deal with it. Your response is failing!”

“Director, the video we shot, the evidence we collected, and the confession of the eyewitness Ma Xiaoting are all here. If you don’t want to believe it, there’s nothing I can do.” Ye Qing still had a blank face.

“Nonsense, how can we believe it like this?” Director Yang knocked the ashtray heavily on the table: “Vampire? If this is reported to the higher-ups, won’t our bureau become a joke? What will the leaders think of us?”

“This case should be properly investigated and the proper procedures followed. Avoid any complications.” Director Wang picked up his teacup and stood up to leave. “Old Yang, keep your men under control.”

Director Yang’s face flushed, and he slammed the table. Turning to Li Yuebai, he said, “And you, Xiao Gu, you haven’t solved your own problems yet, yet you’re constantly meddling with your apprentice? A former police officer, dismissed from public service, is constantly involved in major criminal cases. How can that be? The last time, the morgue tragedy, Xiao Liang’s death, also implicated you. What the hell are you doing? Not only former police officers, but even those currently serving should be investigated and quarantined!”

Li Yuebai had anticipated this outcome before arriving.

No matter how he reasoned, he could only conclude that Director Wang and Director Yang would never trust them and would never report any information about the vampires.

Of course, Li Yuebai had already considered the necessary responses before arriving.

“Director Wang, stay!” Li Yuebai said. “Listen to me first.”

“Stop talking nonsense,” Director Wang waved his hand.

“Director Wang, do you still remember the murder case in the neighboring province?” Li Yuebai suddenly talked about other things: “Just recently, the director in charge of that case was dismissed.”

Director Wang heard the hidden meaning in his words, thought for a moment, and sat down again: “Xiao Gu, what do you want to say?”

Everyone knew about the murder case in the neighboring province. It was about two people who were doing business together. One died and the other escaped. All the blood in the body of the dead one was sucked out of his body, and it caused a lot of uproar.

Now the case had not been solved, but the director had been dismissed.

“Do you know why the director was dismissed?” Li Yuebai’s eyes were steady, staring directly at Director Wang.

“The case has not been solved yet. We failed to control public opinion well, causing panic among the people. We cannot escape the blame.” Director Wang said righteously.

“No, the real reason is that he didn’t report all the suspicious points in a timely manner.” Li Yuebai said, “On the night of the murder, someone witnessed the deceased being sucked of blood by a vampire. That vampire was a fugitive! The witness recorded a confession, but the public security department didn’t take it seriously. Instead, it was discarded as invalid.”

“Could it be that vampires really exist? Who would believe it? If I report it to my superiors, will they believe it?” Director Wang was unconvinced. “Xiao Gu, I’ve been handling cases for so many years, and I’ve never heard of a public security officer being dismissed for not reporting a vampire.”

“Xiao Gu, you’re full of nonsense!” Director Yang scolded.

“We have evidence.” Li Yuebai patted Ye Qing’s shoulder. Ye Qing tapped a few times on the laptop in front of him, and soon, several confidential documents appeared on the projection screen.

“Look, this page is the confession that was withheld and not reported by the neighboring province. That page is a photo. The last page is the internal files of the Ministry of Public Security.” Li Yuebai pointed to the screen. “First, we admit that we made some ideological errors. I sent Ye Qing to hack into the Ministry of Public Security’s database…”

A master of Ye Qing’s caliber could easily access even the Ministry of Public Security’s confidential database.

The confession stated that a witness saw the vampire sucking blood.

The photo was taken before the crime, clearly capturing a dormant vampire.

The internal files stated that warnings and penalties should be strengthened for grassroots units that concealed the truth.

“Did you Photoshop all this?” Director Yang remained sceptical.

Li Yuebai sighed. It was indeed difficult to convince others of such surreal things.

Actually, they weren’t Photoshopped.

On the way back to the bureau, Ye Qing hacked into the Ministry of Public Security’s database and discovered that they already had some clues and were gradually taking the matter seriously. After all, they were the national brainpower behind the case, and in this information age, it was impossible to be completely unaware.

Director Wang frowned, caught in a dilemma.

Reporting the case wasn’t appropriate, and neither was not reporting.

“Director Wang, relax,” Li Yuebai soothed. “Don’t hesitate about this. There’s no point in hesitating. I just reported all the information to the higher-ups under your name.”

“It’s been received,” Ye Qing added.

“Nonsense! How audacious! This is illegal!” Director Wang was shocked and slammed the table, causing teacups and ashtrays to clink.

“You two, you, you, you…” Director Yang pointed at Li Yuebai and Ye Qing, cigarette in hand, eager to arrest them.

“Whether we’re right or wrong, we’ll soon know.” Li Yuebai’s expression was calm. “If the higher-ups really want to blame us, then we’ll take the blame.”

“You will take the blame? You’re not even a temporary employee! Besides, this is all your fault!” Director Yang’s eyes widened.

In the silence, the phone rang. The operator transferred the call to Director Wang. The number was from the capital.

Director Wang sighed and picked up the phone.

“Hello? Director Zhao, hello. That report? Oh, I’m so sorry, that’s all…”

“The situation reported by your bureau is taken seriously by the superiors. We hope that you will continue to investigate. Please do not disclose the specific information to the public for the time being.” The voice discussing the topic was very serious. Director Wang’s face changed all of a sudden.

Taking it seriously? Really taking it seriously?

Could it be that even the superiors believed in some vampire drivel?

“…Yes, I will definitely fulfil my mission.” Director Wang promised solemnly.

After hanging up the phone, the room became even quieter.

“This is weird!” Director Yang lit another cigarette and rubbed his temples vigorously: “I have never done anything wrong in my life, but there are vampires knocking on my door in the middle of the night!”

There will be many more weird things in the future. Li Yuebai sighed and thought secretly.
