A motorboat approached from the distant sea.
The surface of the water was sliced open, and white foam swirled to either side, following the motorboat’s path. A white arrow streaked across the azure background, pointing in the distance toward Bai Ju and Xiao Yao.
Soon, the motorboat approached near them. Xiao Yao thus dismounted from Bai Ju, settling on the surface of the water. He then glanced at his watch; the time was just right.
The person driving the motorboat was a dark-skinned man wearing a camouflage vest and large tan shorts, carrying a black backpack. His hair, slightly longer than a crew cut, stood upright, pushed slightly back by the sea breeze.
“Ling Yun, Deputy Captain of the Qilin Squad, greeting Director Xiao.” Removing his goggles, the man bared his white teeth, stroking his brow in a salute. He then smiled and said, “Is this Bai Wang? Nice to meet you!”
Bai Ju nodded slightly. “Nice to meet you!”
Ling Yun stood up from the motorboat, affixed two talismans to his feet, and then rolled down onto the surface. “I’ve brought these two little creatures here. They’re a bit seasick, so I cast a spell on them to put them to sleep for a while. They’ll wake up in about an hour.” Ling Yun said, taking off the cat bag and handing it to Xiao Yao, “Please check it out.”
Xiao Yao took the bag and handed it directly to Bai Ju, saying bluntly, “From now on, you can contact Bai Wang directly for matters related to these little Demons without going through me.”
Ling Yun was stunned, scratching his head, his eyes shifting between the two of them. “…Oh—okay, I made a mistake. I really should have contacted Bai Wang directly on this one.”
Bai Ju took the cat bag, opened it, and saw two yellow, fluffy creatures curled up together, sound asleep. Reaching in, he felt them, getting a rough idea of their physique. Old Dog Bai then closed the bag again and nodded at Ling Yun again, “Thank you for your hard work. The two little Demons are in good condition. Leave them to me.”
Ling Yun stood straight, maintaining a military stance, and saluted Bai Ju before responding, “My Lord, I have fulfilled my mission.”
He tugged at his collar and shook it, glancing toward Turtle Island. He then asked, “By the way, I heard Captain Qu of the Peregrine Falcon is here too?”
Xiao Yao nodded. Ling Yun was with the Special Service Bureau, in charge of the team in Beijing, designated Qilin. Qu Lang’s team, on the other hand, was more mobile, stationed in no particular area, designated Peregrine Falcon. Ling Yun had come with the little Demons from the Demon Management Bureau, acting both as their escort and as additional Special Service personnel.
“Qu Lang is on the island. I’ll contact him when we get there.” Xiao Yao paused, then asked, “Are you the only one from Beijing?”
Ling Yun grinned. “There’s more than just me. There are two other team members. They’ve already met up with A Heng from the Peregrine Falcon. They’ll arrive this afternoon with the Flying Corpse from Xiangcheng and the Falcon from Mengdu.”
Xiao Yao nodded to show that he understood.
The additional personnel sent by the Secret Service Bureau had not been determined last night. After all, most of the Secret Service Bureau members existed in the form of small groups, and each group rarely had idle time. It was thus impossible to determine who could be squeezed out for a while, and they could only act according to circumstances.
The three of them met smoothly without any additional problems, so they talked briefly about the deployment. Bai Ju then took Xiao Yao back to the island first, while Ling Yun rode a motorboat to meet up with Qu Lang.
Qu Lang had run to Haiyin Castle early. After what happened the day before, the vampires in Haiyin Castle did not stop his actions at all and allowed Qu Lang to set “traps” around Haiyin Castle in a big way.
So when Ling Yun found Qu Lang, what he saw was the captain of the Peregrine Falcon Team not wearing any protective gear, clinging to the cliff behind Haiyin Castle like a gecko with his bare chest.
“What’s the idea about rock climbing early in the morning?” Ling Yun showed his ID to the Butler Saric who was guarding the door, and entered the gate smoothly. When he looked up at the door, he saw a familiar figure clinging to the cliff, with the sweat on his back shining brightly.
Qu Lang’s ears moved slightly when he heard Ling Yun’s voice, so he casually dug a hole in the cliff, clasped his five fingers together, turned halfway, and his sight accurately captured Ling Yun’s position.
Raising an eyebrow, Qu Lang ignored Ling Yun’s words and asked in a hoarse voice: “Qilin is here?”
“Not yet, I’m the first one, leading the way.” Ling Yun also replied in a hoarse voice but felt that this way of talking was too stupid, so he cleared his throat and raised his hand to make a code sign, “Qilin and Peregrine Falcon have reunited and will arrive in the afternoon.”
Qu Lang lowered his head with difficulty to look at Ling Yun’s gesture, nodded after reading it, and was too lazy to make a code signal for Ling Yun. So he just waved his hand and still shouted in a hoarse voice: “Come up and help since you are here!”
Ling Yun: “…”
Ling Yun really didn’t want to follow Qu Lang and be a gecko, especially since this gecko Qu didn’t need protective gear himself, he would think that the others didn’t need protective gear either; their Qilin were down-to-earth Qilin, unlike the Peregrine Falcon team who were always looking up to the sky. But after slightly stretching his joints, Ling Yun resignedly slapped a talisman on his feet, then took a short run-up, touched the ground with his toes, and jumped lightly, stepping over the roof of Haiyin Castle, and accurately climbing to the side of Qu Lang. He then used his fingers as a knife and dug a hole to fix himself on the cliff.
“Which step are you at?” Ling Yun stretched his neck to look at the half-drawn cinnabar talisman on Qu Lang’s hand, “Which one?”
Qu Lang took out a box of cinnabar from the small cloth bag hanging on his hip and handed it to Ling Yun: “This is the thirty-seventh one, and there are still twelve to go.”
Ling Yun took the cinnabar and put it in his pocket. He couldn’t help but exclaim when he heard it: “You’re so fast.”
Qu Lang curled his lips and said nothing, motioning him to look at the half-formed talisman array on the cliff wall so as to confirm the remaining positions to be arranged.
Ling Yun and Qu Lang entered the preliminary team of the Special Service Bureau at the same time. At that time, Ling Yun, who was two years older than Qu Lang, said that he would protect Qu Lang like a big brother. Unexpectedly, he was surpassed by Qu Lang in everything later. In the end, both of them entered the Special Service Bureau, but they were assigned to two different teams. After struggling until now, one had become the captain and the other the deputy captain.
Most of the talisman array on the cliff wall had been laid out, and the remaining points were easy to confirm. Ling Yun chose the point closest to Qu Lang, and while drawing, he reminisced with his old friend whom he hadn’t seen for a long time: “Captain Qu, how have you been recently?”
“Same as always, pretty good.” Qu Lang held the hilt of a saber in his mouth, and spoke a little unclearly, “Safe and sound, nothing major has gone wrong.”
Ling Yun lowered his voice: “Is there any progress on Director Xiao’s matter? It seems that the goal you have been striving for since adolescence has been taken away.”
Qu Lang paused slightly, turned his head and said helplessly, “Can’t you hold it in? Don’t gossip with me if there’s nothing to do. I’ve already said that Brother Xiao is my biological brother. Why do you always talk about it in a crooked way?”
Ling Yun smacked his lips, still a little confused about Qu Lang: “I can’t do this even for my biological brother… Hey, are you really not interested in Director Xiao?”
Qu Lang sneered through his teeth: “That’s because you have no conscience and have never been saved by anyone… Sometimes you owe others a debt that you can’t even repay in several lifetimes. Have you heard of reborn parents? Brother Xiao is almost like a father to me.”
Ling Yun shrugged without comment, clung to the cliff and moved down to draw the remaining half of the talisman, muttering, “I think that Bai Wang is quite dangerous.”
Qu Lang glanced at Ling Yun from the corner of his eye and warned, “My Brother Xiao likes him, don’t meddle in it if you have nothing to do.”
Ling Yun curled his lips, still unable to hold back, so he cast a soundproof barrier and spoke again, “Not only are we forbidden from attacking, but we’re also forbidden from speaking… Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed. This guy isn’t just a simple mountain god, nor an ordinary demon king. His aura is so powerful that even Old Nie’s treasured Vermillion Bird Bone can’t match it. And that scar on his face gives him a sinister look.”
Qu Lang felt a little depressed upon hearing this.
When Bai Ju first met them, his aura was far less overt than it was now. Even the slightest hint of something was masked by his virtuous aura. Now, thinking about it, it must have been the old dog deliberately hiding things from them.
And now, his brother Xiao had been taken to the doghouse. The old dog had thus become honest and less secretive. A sorcerer who had reached a certain level of cultivation could clearly sense the difference in Bai Ju, not to mention Xiao Yao, his bedmate.
But his brother Xiao said nothing, as if the small firecracker lying beside him had not transformed into an atomic bomb.
What could Qu Lang do? He could only play blind along with his brother Xiao. Fortunately, Old Bai was a man of his word, never letting on in front of outsiders. His removal of the covering wasn’t so much a deterrent as a way to let Xiao Yao’s family know what was going on.
Feeling a bit suffocated, Qu Lang sighed. It would be a lie to say he had no feelings.
Seeing Qu Lang didn’t respond, the gossipy Ling Yun was tactful enough not to discuss the topic further.
Frankly, Qu Lang, Xiao Yao, and Old Bai, the man suspected of kidnapping Director Xiao, were one family. A little concern from an outsider like him was fine but interfering too much would be inappropriate.
Lonely Deputy Captain Ling finished drawing a talisman in silence, while Qu Lang had already moved to another spot to draw the next one. Ling Yun flicked his fingers and couldn’t help but find a spot closer to Qu Lang, climbing over to inquire about the news: “Hey, Captain Qu, I heard you guys found a new person on the island?”
Qu Lang: “…”
How come this thief old Ling is so well-informed? Isn’t it a waste of talent if he doesn’t become a paparazzi?
Qu Lang vigilantly protected the only promising candidate who might be recruited into the Secret Service Bureau, and said in a stern tone: “How did you know that? Let me put it out there, if he joins the Secret Service Bureau, we Peregrine Falcon have reserved him first.”
Deputy Captain Ling touched his nose with a dazed look, accidentally smearing some cinnabar on it, and quickly wiped it off with the heel of his palm. His voice then took on a nasal tone: “Ah… well, the new person you’re eyeing, isn’t he from Beijing? We found out when Old Man Xia had someone check his background, so of course we at Qilin got involved…”
Qu Lang: “…” Damn, I miscalculated.
He gritted his teeth. He had his eye on Jing Xia and the mermaid A Song, who were both now going to the Demon Management Bureau, as practical arrangements. He could afford to forgo that. But Shao Simiao, a pure yang Daoist, and a promising candidate for the Secret Service Bureau, he was really unwilling to give him up.
Otherwise, wouldn’t it be a waste of two nights of selling his body to embolden someone else?
The author has something to say:
