That night, a cold wind blew. Bai Yue had just laid down on the bed and had not yet fallen asleep when he heard a slight noise outside the window.
So he got out of bed, walked to the window and looked down. A familiar figure was wandering in front of the door.
The lacquer-colored hair almost melted into the night. At this time, as if he had noticed something, he looked up. The emerald eyes were very beautiful, shining even in the dark.
The man mouthed to him: Come down.
Bai Yue closed the curtains, turned around and walked out the door.
It was late at night and there was silence all around. No lights were on in the nearby houses.
When he came downstairs, Shang Yufei was standing by the door with his hands in his pockets.
Bai Yue then noticed that there was a backpack thrown at his feet, which happened to be the one he brought back that day.
He realized something and looked up and asked, “Are you leaving?”
“Yeah.”
Bai Yue: “So urgent?”
Shang Yufei: “The escape has been discovered.”
Bai Yue was stunned.
“Anyway, I have to go back now and I can’t come back even during the summer vacation.” Shang Yufei clicked his tongue.
Bai Yue pondered for a moment. “You told me before that you’d asked for leave early?”
Shang Yufei seemed hesitant and looked away as he said, “That was a lie.”
“The truth is, I failed all my classes and have to stay over for tutoring this summer. But because I wanted to celebrate your birthday, I ran away. Now I’ve been caught.”
Shang Yufei frowned. “It’s so embarrassing, I can’t say it.”
“What’s embarrassing? Failing your classes?” Bai Yue asked puzzledly. “But your grades were already pretty bad.”
Shang Yufei: “Hey!”
“Sorry, I was just kidding.” Bai Yue chuckled.
“It’s just a birthday. It doesn’t matter whether we celebrate it or not.” He arched his brows. “We still have plenty of time.”
Shang Yufei remained silent.
At least for his one and only coming-of-age ceremony, he wanted to be with Bai Yue.
However, he didn’t say it out loud. He just reached into his pocket, hesitated for a few seconds, and pulled out a small, plain box. He then handed it over with one hand.
He coughed softly. “This is for you… a coming-of-age gift.”
The tips of his ears were somehow slightly red.
Bai Yue stared at it for a moment, only to smile when the other glared at him, seemingly questioning what he was looking at. His gaze then shifted downward, settling on the plain box.
He had already discovered its existence the day Shang Yufei returned.
Bai Yue: “Aren’t you going to put it on for me?”
Shang Yufei was startled, then realized, “You knew about it already?”
Bai Yue didn’t reply, simply extending his hand.
…He had indeed known about it already.
Shang Yufei had hoped to see Bai Yue’s surprise, but it was disappointing to see him fail right from the start.
However, when he saw the glimmer in Bai Yue’s eyes, he decided not to dwell on it.
Shang Yufei knelt on one knee, then holding Bai Yue’s hand with one hand, with the other, he opened the small box and pulled out the silver ring.
The ring was plain, yet elegantly simple. Only the pinyin for “BAIYUE” was marked around the inside. There were no flowers or crowds around, only the bright stars of the night sky, looking down at the two people on the ground. Incredibly shy, his expression flickered in and out.
Shang Yufei solemnly placed the ring on Bai Yue’s ring finger. Just as he was about to deliver his line, the ring got stuck mid-span.
The size wasn’t right.
This was a complete blunder for a “proposal.”
Shang Yufei froze in place.
Bai Yue, observing this, reached out, grabbed Shang Yufei’s wrist, and yanked him to his feet.
“I’ve grown 10 centimeters taller,” he said unfazed. “My frame has gotten bigger.”
After all, they hadn’t seen each other for a year, so it couldn’t be helped.
But for Shang Yufei, it was too humiliating. So he coughed lightly and tried to withdraw his hand: “Next time…”
But his hand was held firmly.
Bai Yue lowered his head, looking at the ring in his hand. “It’s okay, I want this one,” he said, pulling another ring from his pocket, attached to a silver chain.
“Can you help me put it on?”
Shang Yufei had noticed Bai Yue carrying this ring ever since they met. He had asked who had given it to him before but hadn’t gotten an answer.
So perhaps there was a competitive element to the exchange of the same ring.
Silently, he took the silver chain from Bai Yue and strung his own ring onto it. The two rings clashed in mid-air, making a soft, clanking sound.
Bai Yue quietly observed Shang Yufei’s actions, then suddenly said, “You’ve asked me before who gave you this.”
“I didn’t tell you the name then… because I didn’t know.”
Shang Yufei suddenly looked up.
Bai Yue looked over and said, “I’ve worn it around my neck for as long as I can remember. I just know it’s something very important.”
Shang Yufei had been jealous for a long time because of this ring. But because they were both so young, Bai Yue hadn’t yet realized their feelings for each other. So, he was baffled.
He took the silver chain from Shang Yufei and said, “Now, there are two of them.” He was about to put it on his neck when he was stopped.
But Shang Yufei said, “I’ll help you.”
He then turned and stood behind Bai Yue, pulling open his collar to reveal a slender, white neck.
He unfolded the silver chain, looped it around Bai Yue’s neck, and slipped it on.
Bai Yue fiddled with the two rings on the front. But after the chain was put on, the man behind him didn’t move. Instead a burning gaze pierced the back of his neck, making it feel faintly hot.
Bai Yue tilted his head, meeting the man’s dark green eyes. Then he smiled and asked, “Why, do you want a bite?”
Alphas marked their omegas by biting the glands on their necks, declaring their dominance. But this wasn’t a common practice between two Alphas.
Shang Yufei looked at Bai Yue, his broken brows raised slightly.
Bai Yue had meant it to be a joke and was about to brush it off when he felt the man behind him grip his shoulder. The man then opened his mouth and lowered his head to the back of his neck.
A warm breath touched his neck. Bai Yue hadn’t expected Shang Yufei to actually do this, and his body froze.
But even after a long time, no pain came from behind. Instead a strand of hair brushed past, leaving a slight tingle.
And a familiar voice rang from behind his ear: “Silly, stop playing tricks on me.”
Bai Yue felt a gentle pressure on the back of his neck. “Next time, I’ll be serious.”
His collar was then straightened. Bai Yue raised his hand and slowly stroked the back of his neck. The silver chain was worn there, cold, yet burning his fingertips.
His heartbeat quickened, almost feeling unstoppable.
Even if Shang Yufei had bitten him, it wouldn’t have left anything but a tooth mark.
He remembered what he’d said to Shang Yufei before—marking upon reaching adulthood.
It had only recently happened, yet it felt like ages ago.
Currently, the “marking act” was no longer possible. Alphas had an innate physiological repulsion between one another.
“…”
So Bai Yue turned. “When are you leaving?”
Shang Yufei checked the time. “I have to go now.”
The Imperial First Military Academy was located in another star system, accessible only by airship. The next flight was almost up.
Bai Yue was speechless for a moment, then said, “Perhaps, I could go to your school…”
“No,” Shang Yufei interrupted without hesitation. “I don’t want you to be a soldier. And don’t you want to open your own restaurant?”
A soldier would, of course, be treated with respect and courtesy within the Empire, but the initial promotion process was extremely difficult.
In Shang Yufei’s view, while Bai Yue had physiologically transformed into an Alpha, his personality couldn’t be instantly transformed. Besides, he alone was enough to change the current situation. He just wanted Bai Yue to pursue his passion.
“…” Bai Yue smiled, “I understand.”
Then, to catch his airship, Shang Yufei left. All the time wondering when they would meet again.
Bai Yue stood there, watching him leave for a long time.
The Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination) was approaching, and even the third-year students at Luohua College were beginning to cram—except for those confirmed for admission.
After passing the admission interview, they still had to take the separate entrance exam for the graduate school. However, the difficulty was much lower than the Gaokao.
An Yu hadn’t wasted any time these days, chatting up nearly every third-year Alpha, but he still hadn’t found the hero who had saved him that day.
He felt increasingly dejected, like Cinderella abandoned by her Prince Charming.
He crossed out the last name in his notebook. Thus, the third-year Alphas were completely wiped out.
An Yu sighed, thinking back to what happened that night.
Although time had passed, the repeated recollection over these days had deepened his memory. Many embellished scenes had also surfaced.
This intensified An Yu’s conviction that the Alpha he met that day must be his destined lover!
He walked into the classroom, notebook in hand. With his head bowed, he didn’t notice the person approaching. And his shoulder bumped into someone.
“Sorry,” the person replied.
Now, An Yu’s mind was completely focused on finding someone, and his personality wasn’t as aggressive as before. But he remained tsundere, convinced the person had deliberately bumped into him, trying to touch him.
An Yu’s eyebrows shot up, about to question him. But when he saw the person’s figure, he swallowed the rest of his words and instinctively reached out: “Wait!”
Bai Yue was pulled back, stopping in his tracks. Looking back, he asked: “What’s up?”
An Yu realized who he had grabbed.
He let go: “Nothing.”
Bai Yue, accustomed to the person’s unpredictable behavior, ignored him and was about to continue walking. But he was stopped again.
“Wait!”
“You, you…” An Yu’s pretty little face turned red, “Do you want to touch my…”
Bai Yue: “?”
Ahhhh Impossible!
An Yu turned around and ran away before he finished speaking. He held his face in disbelief.
What on earth was he thinking, why would he ask that guy such a question. No matter how similar their bodies were, he would never confuse the difference between an Omega and an Alpha. Why would he think of asking Bai Yue?
An Yu’s mind was in a mess, and he was increasingly confused about what he was thinking.
Bai Yue was also confused.
He just felt that this person was becoming more and more weird after the awakening period.
Li Ren, who was standing aside, saw all this with a horrified expression: “Is he crazy?”
Bai Yue shook his head and said he didn’t know.
At this time, the head teacher suddenly came to the door. His eyes swept across the class and finally fixed on Bai Yue. His expression was serious and his face was not good-looking.
“Student Bai Yue, the principal is looking for you.”
