The fine and dense snow fell heavier and heavier. After six days, a thick layer of snow had accumulated on the road.

The refugees who were already starving had become even more miserable from hunger and cold. Many old, weak and sick people had fallen down and couldn’t get up along the way, crying all the way.

Yu Linlang opened a crack in the curtain, reached out to pick up a piece of crystal clear snowflakes, and rubbed the coolness on her fingertips.

Since two carriages were vacated overnight for General Xiao Zhao to make other arrangements five days ago, there were now more than a dozen boxes of flowers and plants in the carriage.

The master and servant often huddled together on one side, and there was no place for even a charcoal brazier.

In order to let Yu Linlang rest a little more comfortably, Jiu Jin rested outside with the coachman at night.

The cold wind and snow came all night, and they relied on bowls of ginger soup to get through it.

“General Xiao Zhao and his men have collected some rice and grain, and they’re going to make some bean and corn porridge tonight.”

Jiu Jin stomped the snow off her legs, shivered, and climbed into the carriage, bringing Yu Linlang a bowl of ginger soup.

“As the young lady instructed, we’ll donate our remaining four bags of corn as well. It’s a token of our appreciation.”

Yu Linlang nodded.

“Alas, although we make three large buckets of ginger soup every night, there are so many refugees that there’s not much to share.”

“We’ll just do our best.” Yu Linlang’s face was indifferent, not particularly moving.

The world was full of pitiful people, and it was ridiculous to say that everyone could be helped.

“I heard that a young lady from the Li family up there vacated her carriage for the starving people, and many people knelt down and called her a living bodhisattva.”

Yu Linlang nodded again, her expression noncommittal.

Jiu Jin reached out and lifted a corner of the curtain, gesturing out the window. “Look, that Miss Li. She’s been standing there in the cold wind for a long time, not even feeling tired.”

Yu Linlang glanced around, her gaze pausing on Miss Li, who stood gracefully with her swan neck held high, before settling on the carriage to the side and rear.

“It’s said that the court has appointed two pacification envoys to coordinate disaster relief efforts. The one in the carriage is the prince of the Xuanping Marquisate from the capital.”

Yu Linlang shook her head. “I’m afraid the Xuanping Marquisate is a place that doesn’t enjoy the emperor’s favor.”

“What do you mean, young lady?” Jiu Jin asked curiously.

“If the emperor’s grace is so great, why would he send someone so sick and on the verge of death to seek death in the dead of winter?”

“Should we send someone to investigate?”

“Why should I investigate him?” Yu Linlang was speechless. “He’s just a dying man. What does it have to do with me?”

She reached out and patted the little girl’s forehead. “Don’t be so suspicious all day long. Go to bed early. At this rate, we’ll have to endure two more nights before we can enter the city.”

However, in the middle of the night, Yu Linlang was awakened by the sound of arguing.

Rubbing her swollen head, Yu Linlang stretched her arms and legs. “Who’s making a fuss outside?”

“Miss, the daughter of the Lizhou governor has caught a cold. I’d like you to come over and take a look!”

Mama Hu raised her high-pitched voice and urged urgently, “Please come down and take a look. Jiu Jin is so rude.”

“What? I already told you my miss isn’t a doctor. If she’s sick, she should go to a pharmacy or a doctor’s office. You’re disturbing my miss’s rest in the middle of the night. That’s truly disrespectful.”

“You dare to lift the curtain without permission? I’ll chop off your hands, you old bast**d!”

Jiu Jin suddenly shouted, and the two women who tried to force the curtain backed away awkwardly.

Yu Linlang half-opened the curtain herself, her eyes coldly sweeping over the people below.

Mama Hu, along with several maids, pushed the driver aside. In front of Jiu Jin stood two powerful old women, presumably servants of Lizhou Governor’s household.

“Miss Yu.” Mama Hu stepped forward and spoke rapidly, “Saving lives is like putting out a fire. Please go over and take a look at her. Miss Li’s father is a colleague and friend of our master. You must do your best to treat her.”

Yu Linlang raised her eyelids slightly, “The young lady is in a delicate condition. I, with my basic medical knowledge, am afraid I am not qualified to be a doctor.”

The old woman from Lizhou Governor’s family stamped her feet and said angrily, “The roads ahead and behind are blocked by refugees, and the traffic is slow. We can’t get into the city right away. Otherwise why would we come to you, Miss Yu, for help?”

“How can you beg for help like this? Who are you trying to intimidate?”

The other old woman was very sensible. Seeing this, she knelt on the ground and cried out in a pang, “Miss, please be so kind and save my girl.”

Yu Linlang’s face was calm, and she waved her hand, “Never mind, I’ll go over and take a look. I only have a superficial understanding of medicine, and I don’t have any special medicines on hand.”

“Are you sure you can cure my young lady?” The many excuses made the old woman furious.

Yu Linlang shook her head calmly, “I haven’t even seen her, so how can I say I’m sure?”

“Go and carry the Third Young Lady over here,” the old woman from the Lizhou Governor’s Mansion said coldly, “Send some maids and servants to clean up the carriage so my young lady can lie down more comfortably.”

Jiu Jin’s mouth dropped open, as if speechless at the shamelessness of the person before him…

But Mama Hu had already come forward with a few maids, nodding and bowing, agreeing, “Okay, okay.”

“What’s okay?!” Jiu Jin reacted, her chest almost exploding with anger. “Just treat the disease. What’s the matter? The incense burner chased away the welcoming monk, and you, the Lizhou Governor’s Mansion, are trying to usurp the throne?”

“How can you talk like that? That’s the Lizhou Governor’s young lady, how can you usurp the throne?” Mama Hu tried to move forward to pull Jiu Jin away, but she raised her hand and punched her, leaving half her face frozen.

“Don’t get close to me!” Jiu Jin was not satisfied with just one punch, so she hit Mama Hu on the head several times, “I thought you were the dog raised by the governor’s wife? When did you become the dog of the Lizhou governor’s mansion? People haven’t even given you a bone to chew, but you’re just barking and wagging your tail. Aren’t you ashamed of your old face?”

The two old women in the Lizhou governor’s mansion were so angry that their faces turned blue. So they looked up at Yu Linlang, “Miss Yu, you are too powerful with your fists and mouth.”

Yu Linlang actually smiled faintly at them, “Thank you for your praise, two mamas.”

It was obviously an ordinary face, but this smile was like the first melting of snow, rippling out a wave of beautiful water, which made Mu Feng, who ran out of the carriage to peek at the excitement, stunned for a moment.

“Brother, brother.” He jumped into the carriage excitedly, saying with great interest, “The girl in the carriage opposite, and the girl next to her, are quite interesting! I have never seen such a fierce girl, hitting people at the slightest disagreement! You say if I send someone to buy this girl from her, will the lady agree?”

“Spying on women quarrelling in the middle of the night is not a gentleman’s behavior. You also want to buy a girl who has been raised by a rich lady since childhood, you are simply outrageous! If you are really free, go back to the city for me and meet up with Lord Lu.” Mu Zhao leaned aside with a calm expression, a hint of fatigue in his face.

Mu Feng shrank his head, “I won’t.”

“Before I came out, I promised my mother that I would follow you every step of the way and check on your health at any time.”
