Shen Yu, who was standing aside, held his chin and thought for a moment, then suddenly said: “I may have a way.”
Baobao raised his head and looked at him with some suspicion, but still asked hopefully: “Human, do you know the Soul Gathering Technique?”
Xu Maomao: “What is the Soul Gathering Technique?”
“A very high-level spell,” Baobao said distressedly, “Maybe I can do it if I practice for another ten thousand years.” Ten thousand years meant that its little master would not disperse his soul aall that time, and Baobao must survive the catastrophe mentioned by the Jade Rabbit which was the only way for him to gain such a long life. These things were too far away and not feasible.
Shen Yu: “Of course I will use human methods, but I want to know, if you want to piece together the soul of your master, do you have to find the ghost?”
Baobao shook his head: “It’s okay to find the ashes or the little master’s grave, but I have never found it. Maybe he had gone abroad as those people said.”
“Grave…” Shen Yu repeated these two words and asked, “What was your master’s name?” Shen Yu didn’t understand ghost things, but he had an idea about human things.
Unexpectedly, Baobao said with a mournful cat face: “He was a noble at that time. The housekeeper and his uncles called him young master most of the time. The young master’s name was very long. I couldn’t remember it with my intelligence at that time. I only know that it was the surname of the last royal family, you all know it.”
Shen Yu and Xu Maomao understood in an instant, but the family was too large, with many branches, and very complicated relations. Moreover, due to historical turmoil, many members of the family were not included in the genealogy, especially those who may have gone abroad, and it was even more difficult to find them anonymously.
“Do you know his address?”
Baobao: “I just know the general area, which has been razed to the ground now.”
Shen Yu checked the address it gave him and frowned, because unfortunately it was a palace complex where several families lived, but the area of investigation was undoubtedly much smaller.
Next, Shen Yu asked Baobao for the pocket watch, and Baobao became wary again. Shen Yu explained: “To purchase a Patek Philippe watch, you need to register the buyer’s information. I’m not sure if the information for so many years is still there, but this is the most direct and least error-prone method.”
Indeed, in those turbulent years, foster care and adoption among nobles were very common, and the people living in those houses were not necessarily the owners. But for a watch as expensive as Patek Philippe, it was more likely that the elders would only give it to their own younger generation. Combined with the simultaneous locking of residence, pocket watch information and other aspects, the identity of Baobao’s little master could almost be completely determined.
Baobao was persuaded and agreed to hand over the watch to Shen Yu for investigation, but after all, the pocket watch had a soul attached to it, so it very carefully added a prohibition to stabilize it.
Xu Maomao felt a little sorry for the tabby cat. Its experience had made it very wary. It had been keeping the watch alone for decades, and even traveled thousands of miles to seek help, so he took the initiative to invite him to live in until he found his little master who treated him well.
“You have no objection, right?” Xu Maomao raised his little head and asked Shen Yu.
Shen Yu had brought home countless animals before and after. Even Oscar himself was picked up by him. How could he mind if Baobao stayed with them? Not only didn’t he mind, but he even left work early and went to the seafood market to buy fresh salmon, planning to make salmon pilaf for the two cats.
When Baobao left the office, he had already returned to his original form, and was carried out by Shen Yu. Because of its limited abilities, it couldn’t maintain its human form for a long time, so it simply felt comfortable being a cat.
The clerks looked at each other: Where did this tabby cat come from? Was it there just now? And what happened to the young sharp-looking guy who came in before? So, what about him?!
Xiao Guan and others entered the office to clean up, and suddenly saw the familiar coat… Wait, didn’t it belong to the sharp-looking guy? So… their upright, pure and sanctimonious Manager Shen did something crazy to him!!!
In this way, this unsolved mystery shrouded the Nausicaa Pet Shop for a long time.
Baobao, who followed Shen Yu home, had moved into a house in modern society for the first time, and it was still a large mansion. Just like Grandma Liu when she entered the Grand View Garden[1], everything he saw felt new, but he was also very sensible and polite, and did not behave like Grandma Liu. When he entered the house for the first time, he was so cautious that if he even lost a hair on his blanket, he quickly ate the hair into his stomach, thinking of spitting it out when he returned to the mountains.
Both Xu Maomao and Shen Yu felt distressed and repeatedly stressed that he should not be so nervous. Shen Yu rarely generously even gave up Xu Maomao to Baobao and let him play with Baobao.
As early as when he was in the pet store, Baobao was very interested in cat toys and cat climbing frames. The climbing frame in Shen Yu’s house was still a seven-story building. When he saw it, his eyes straightened up and his tail couldn’t help but stand up.
“Come, come and play~” Xu Maomao warmly invited.
After the cautious Baobao repeatedly confirmed that the cat immortal was indeed inviting him, he carefully placed a paw on the furry pedal.
“…” Baobao blinked, “Meow~~(*@ο@*) Wow~”
The cat’s nature was aroused, and it finally let go and climbed up three floors happily. As a result, at the fourth level, Baobao suddenly stopped, his ears stood up, he raised his head and looked up high in confusion, his whole body tensing up as if in salute.
Xu Maomao looked down from above and couldn’t help but laugh at its serious expression: “What’s wrong?”
“There’s… something on it…” Baobao’s nose twitched fiercely, “What… what is it?”

[1] Granny Liu is a character in the 18th century Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. She is an elderly country rustic and a distant relative of Lady Wang through “joining families” and marriage (i.e. they are not related by blood).
The expression roughly translating to “Granny Liu visits the Grand View Gardens” refers to this character, who visits the noble family who plays host to her, but which also makes fun of her openly for her simplicity (Granny Liu is, however, grateful for their generosity.) The expression is used in modern Chinese to describe someone, usually simple and unsophisticated, who is overwhelmed by new experiences and luxurious surroundings.
